The Senior Moment with Jonah Goldberg | GoodFellows

The Dispatch’s Jonah Goldberg joins Good Fellows to discuss his differences with Niall Ferguson’s Soviet America essay, the Biden/Trump gerontocracy, and the European elections. Also, can someone help Niall choose a dog?
ABOUT THE SERIES
GoodFellows, a Hoover Institution broadcast, features senior fellows John Cochrane, Niall Ferguson, and H.R. McMaster discussing the social, economic, and geostrategic ramifications of this changed world. They can’t banter over lunch these days, but they continue their spirited conversation online about what comes next, as we look forward to an end to the crisis.

It happened in the Soviet Union because Stalin had given governmental power to a fairly small, and paranoid inner circle and the Soviet Union had no mechanism for taking away their power. Basically all Soviet leaders before Gorbachov came from that group, and so just inevitably, 40 years later, they were all either dead or very old men. I dont see how that maps onto the current situation in the US.

Great episode, as ever! For my money, Lord Tweedmouth really knocked it out of the park when he created the Golden Retriever; an incredibly fun and gentle family dog that will retrieve your paper, mow your lawn, do your taxes and help the kids with their homework. If their longer coat is a setback, Labs and Flat-Coated Retrievers are excellent, as well!! German Pointers, English Pointers, Irish Setters and Brittany Spaniels are also great choices. Go with one of the great sporting breeds of the British Isles, Niall - you won't regret it!!

As a big fan of the GoodFellows and Mr. Ferguson in particular, I can´t help but share my recommendation for the big question of the dog choice. I definitely recommend a White Swiss Shepherd as the family dog . As a descendant of the purebred white Shepherd dogs, they are very loyal and caring of family, especially of children that they might see as "sheep" in they responsibility. Able to form a strong social bonding and being very smart, they can become true friends for children and adults. At least that is my experience with the one we have. Minuses of the breed: might be allergic and sensitive, so it takes time to find the right nutrition. P.S. Volodymyr Zelensky also has one :)

Niall: What I got from JG's response to yr "We are the soviets" was "Sir, this opinion offends me". Which is something you should never hear in a place of learning. It's not healthy disagreement. It signifies breach of taboo; there are things off-limits. I often mis-judge situations, but his presence seemed to be intended as a bollocking. For me (bc I can not take a bollocking w/ the appropriate penitence) this normally precedes the heave-ho. Every time this happens my heart sinks, and I think, "This place is not what I thought it was, and I am a stranger here."

I am in substantive agreement with Jonah. One MASSIVE difference between our gerontocracy and the Soviet Union is that we have elections and they do not. We could very easily find ourselves in a few months with a female President who is in her early 60s. (God forbid!) We could have a wholesale turnover of bureaucrats if Trump wins, with the entire upper strata of every federal agency being replaced. We could in 4 years have someone young and energetic as President like Vivek Ramaswamy, with a very young and vigorous cabinet. In short, we have the ability to reinvent ourselves on relatively short notice. I am a Vietnam era veteran, and clearly remember growing up in a very different world, with massive riots that gutted every city, million person marches on the Capital, a half million GIs spread across South Vietnam with a couple hundred dead every week, and a constant trickle of political assassinations... and two presidents in a row being forced out.. . Etc etc. But we recovered very quickly, and within a decade of the war's end it seemed to be largely forgotten. My guess is that in a decade, the "Fourth Turning" will be complete and our society will have recovered from it all and be stronger for it.

We got a specifically bred "urban dog" (in our case a Cavoodle) as opposed to a working dog breed (such as a Collie). Non-shedding, hypoallergenic, submissive and medium energy (will run if u want it to but will lie around if it's too rainy to walk). Working dog breeds need a job and get bored and anxious if they can't work. Ours has a wonderful temperament and is not too big (and needs to eat lots and sh!t lots and is difficult to pick up or travel with) or small.

The point about Gerontocracy isn't just about old people running stuff, it is that the party leadership doesn't trust younger people to sustain the system as it has existed for decades. New people with new ideas might take things in a different direction which could totally destabilize the current organization and political dynamics. For instance, OLD people care a lot about NATO. Younger people don't. A new wave of leadership might appeal to a younger constituency by saying we need to drop NATO and use the money and energy that went into sustaining the alliance on something that appeals to the younger constituency. Young people are largely ambivalent about Israel or hostile to it. New leadership might be able to use that political force to change America's relationship with Israel, but the powers that be are absolutely committed to the current relationship, and so there can be no new blood with new ideas on that issue either. The senior decision-making personnel are hesitant to admit new people into their ranks because new ideas could destroy the established consensus.

Here's a counterpoint to Biden's age being a concern from a national security perspective: The Trump administration's inherent inability to effectively execute policy objectives due to an entrenched, ideologically resistant bureaucracy would be equally-or, in some cases, more-detrimental to an administration's efficacy

I listen to Goldberg and I agree with him on so many things, then he says "I despise Donald Trump" and that's it, I don't trust his judgement. You can't possibly report fairly on a candidate if you are emotionally involved with them. Someone like Bari Weiss would have been a better source for criticisms of D.T. than Jonah Goldberg, she has control of her bias. I don't care for Trump, I never voted for him. I don't care for Biden, I never voted for him. So trust me when I say, "I want both men to live out their lives in comfort and warmth, far from Washington, D.C."

Labrador Retriever. They get along with people, other animals, and are extremely trainable. Get an American (field version) and not the English version-they are thinner, more sleek, and have a slightly longer lifespan. I recommend black, but any version will do.
