The Seiko SPB313 Slim Turtle: 3 Loves and 2 Hates After 6 Months

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In the summer of 2022, Seiko released two watches that excited the Seiko fan base because they were watches seemingly tailor made for us. First were the Seiko 5 SSK GMTs and then the slimmest high end Prospex divers yet, the new slim Turtles: SPB313, SPB315, and SPB317. For years we’ve been asking for smaller and slimmer dive watches and Seiko got the ball rolling with the beloved SPB143 from a few years back but we wanted more. Here Seiko recreated the 70’s reference 6105-8000 which was the smaller and more streamlined “Captain Willard.” We finally have a high end Seiko diver that comes in at 12.2mm and it's a stunner
It’s now been 6 months since I got my SPB313 and during this time I got my first Captain Willard, the SPB265 Ice Diver, and Seiko also released brand new versions of the Slim Turtle like the SPB333 and SPB335 limited editions. So it’s time to go over what my experiences have been like with what started off as one of the best Seiko dive watches in years. In this video I’m going to go over 3 things that I love about the watch and 2 things about the watch that I don’t love, and we’ll see if this SPB313 has managed to fend off an onslaught of incredible new releases from Seiko.

Really love your long term thoughts on watches! The watch review landscape is 99% reviews based off as little as a few hours to at most a week since that is the easiest way to push out content. I totally get that is necessary in a lot of cases but getting these long term reviews is a really nice change of pace

Thanks AJ so happy to hear that you enjoy these long term videos! Yeah 6 month reviews really show if the watch made it out of the honeymoon phase which is super important to consider and so many things can slowly change for the better or for the worse. Glad to say that this one made it out of the honey moon phase strong!

This is because people are quick to heap praise on something due to new watch owner bias. The flaws slowly creep in weeks or even months later. You just choose to ignore them for as long as possible

The ice blue indicies really make the dial, but I agree that the color combo as a whole just works (including the traffic stop second hand!!). Fantastic watch, dude

I bought the Seiko ‘Willard’ SPB237J1 last year and have been really enjoying it. This slim turtle was in the mix when I was looking for a seiko diver so really enjoyed this review. Sure you’ve heard of uncle straps (uncle seiko) but I’ve got my Willard on his Z199 bracelet and it’s a dream! Has a great taper and wears like silk, so comfortable! Keep up the great content!

I have to say I need to take a look at one of these at some point. Like you if a watch has a date then my preferred position is at 6 with some exceptions like the Pelagos. This dial works brilliantly at 4:30 being discreet with the matching date wheel. What is stopping me pulling the trigger is that I have the Great White (that I must put on the sail cloth strap at some point when I a better dual spring bar removal tool, there is very little slack on the bracelet solid end links). It won't stop me taking a look though. Many thanks for sharing TWI.

After wearing only Rolex oyster bracelets for a few years, I was surprised to see how nice the bracelet is on this one. Video makes it look a little bulky, but in reality its elegant and extremely nice looking. Anyone who compares this to a king turtle, hasn’t handled an Spb313. It’s so much more refined and thoughtful in comparison.

The Aluminum bezel is a design choice. I’m glad you said it because I agree with you there. I appreciate that the Black Bay line has it and I think sports watches look better with a matte bezel. A Ceramic bezel isn’t necessarily “better” and the proof is in the fact that you can get a 100$ steel dive captain Willard homage with a fully lumed ceramic bezel. !

  • @Tom_H327

The case of the slim turtle is amazing. I see pictures and videos of this watch and I am floored by the case size and shape, like how the case looks like a cushion case from the top, but from the side looks more like a flat disc the bezel is sitting on. Taking that into consideration when looking at the dial and seeing how recessed it is inside the case just makes the whole watch look so thin. I don't know how else to describe how beautiful the slim actually is. The clasp here is the same one I have for my Samurai. I really liked the concept of the dive extension until I realized that the extension just throws the whole bracelet into adjustable chaos. In order to make the bracelet fit my wrist perfectly for this time if year, I had to remove two links from one side and move the micros all the way down. It looks ok and no one but me can tell that the link count on each side is off, but I digress.

All you pointed are great and in line with what I would have thought about it. One addition... I really like that they actually placed the crown at 4.. well, it's actually past slightly at what looks like maybe 4:10. It's just that little bit more out of the way as opposed to the typical 3:45 position. I would have maybe preferred exactly at 4:00, but I'm not mad where it's at on these watches. What's weird is the vintage Seiko's actually were at 4. I wonder why they made the slight offset to be 3:45? And, they proved they can do it as higher end end Seiko's with offset crown are also actually at 4. I'm thinking GS as well as Seiko's that run with say an 8L movement. Anyways, nice respective semi long term review.

I have been wearing one for a couple of months, and I love it. It's a great size, and the large indices on the paper white dial lend great legibility. While I am a big fan of the tool watch aesthetic, it sometimes does not feel famcy enough, but the polished black surfaces change my mind again.

Glad to hear that youre enjoying yours! Yeah the tool watch feel is great but i wore it a few times on a grey leather strap and the simplicity really boosted its fanciness to my eyes at least! As much as I sometimes want matte black hand and indices, the polished finish still looks great!

I’ve had this watch for a couple of months and really like it. My one complaint would be the crappy 6r36 movement. Mine seems to run about 15 seconds slow per day. It’s within tolerances, but at this price range, they could do a lot better.

  • @john-carlosynostroza

    @john-carlosynostroza

Totally. 15 seconds a day is kind of ridiculous. Mine does about 20. If I wear it everyday without taking it off it will actually do 325 seconds though. Sometimes a little more but pretty much always 10 or less

I love the Willard, the issue is that out of the box the 6L movement out of the box is horribly inaccurate and I did need to adjust it. Wonder with long term reviews you might discuss accuracy of each piece. Cheers

  • @squinkygordon1322

My green Williard (6r35) also wasn't accurate out of the box... It takes about 57 winds for a full power reserve. Once I wound it up completely, starting wearing it every day for different intervals, and also wound it 10-15 times each morning for awhile... it settled in nicely to within a few seconds a day. (I also would give it a full wind again at the end of each week). The movement had about a 1-2 month break in period.

I have the black dial non gilt version on the rubber but I think I might have to source this bracelet because it does look good (even if the clasp isnt great). So if you had to choose between this and your SPB265 Ice Diver, which one would you keep?

  • @thewatchidiot

In a weird way I'm kind of glad the non gilt version didn't come with the bracelet bc I would have undoubtedly bought that version and I wouldn't have experienced this white/black combo! And oh man that's an unbelievably tough choice but I legitimately have to say I want both together bc they each give me such a unique experience.
