The Seiko Pogue - One of histories coolest automatic chronographs

Thanks again Mike for lending in your 6139s!

Awesome video. If you check Pogues book “For the Grace of God” there is a picture of him wearing his Seiko well into retirement. I have six restored 6139/6138 models myself and they are terrific daily wearers although the price creep is making me more cautious. Today I’m wearing my 6139-6015 blue dial and loving it.

Herman Rivera , that’s a tough one. I have an original blue one that I just got that has the same problem. There are aftermarket crown assemblies on eBay for about $75. I don’t know how good they are. I recommend that you contact Adrian at Vintage Time Australia or Spencer Klein at Klein Vintage Watch.

GEARY It will likely cost more than a speedmaster if they do like they did with the 62MAS. I love Seiko (though as of late the people running it are changing that) but not even I would pay coaxial speedmaster prices for a Pouge re-issue or heritage piece. A perfect example of my current distaste with Seiko is how suddenly the 6R movement has become rarefied and more expensive even though for years you could get them for less than 400$. It’s like Seiko are announcing that they are done trying to make improved and newer movements.

no thanks on the re-issue. they tried this on the UFO/Flying Saucer 6119/6106 and release the only version that people bought was the SRPC13 teal dial. it looks great but it doesn't function like the original. plus the price will be insane for seiko to make an auto chrono like the 6139s.

My 6002 was my Dad’s that he bought, wore and dove in the Navy during Vietnam. It’s different than your example where his has the Chronograph Automatic with the 70m water resist on the 9 o’clock side. Suwa logo as well but just no 17J with it. I have a closeup picture he took of it on his wrist from 1972 that confirms it was like that when it was new. Searching around you will also see others with this variant. Both mine and Col Pogues are also the international french/english date version you could switch between. Which I’m not certain if this 6005 shown is. The 6005 also has 3 different yellow dials produced for these watches with this case reference as well. This is where many get into the “pogueness” of the watch. What is and isn’t. In my eyes pogue is the general series for these beautiful timepieces. You can’t go wrong with any of them, and I’m fortunate to get to wear my late father’s to this day.

Thank you for this video. I am watching videos on this watch to learn about mine. My wifes hobby is estate jewelry. She recently gave me a June of 69 6139 6000 with blue face. I'm infatuated. All I did was start inspecting it with a magnifying glass, and it took off ticking. All functions work. Proof front and back.

Just bought a near mint 6002 from '76. Original dial with no black ring around the sub-dial. Flawless except some minor scrapes on the movement in line with the rivets caused by a loose weight. Still running strong, keeping good time. Can't believe my luck...

This has to be the coolest space watch, in my opinion. Sure, the speedy was there first in general, but this is the first auto in space! Also, it's a lot more visually interesting. I actually came into possession of a very beat-up silver-dial 6139 a couple months ago. It no longer runs, and needs a LOT of parts, but I'm excited to get it up and running again.

Between November 73 & February 1974, during Skylab-4 space station mission both astronaut William Pogue (Seiko 6139) and astronaut Gerald Carr (Movado Datron) wore an automatic chronograph. So both the "Seiko Pogue" and "Movado Carr" can wear the title of first automatic chronographs to be worn in space! #MoonwatchUniverse

My parents got me one for Christmas one year when I was a kid. I still have it and it's in really nice condition. Only problem is it only runs properly when the chronograph function is engaged. I'm a bit leery of taking it anywhere locally (small city in TX) to work on it. I need to check the caseback to see its age. I'm thinking mid--late 70's which would have made me 8-12 yrs old. Of course I had no idea about the significance of the piece back then. I just thought it was cool as hell looking !!

@@Boblw56 That's awesome! I've been searching for a 1971 for over a year now and just pulled the trigger on one last week. Found it on eBay. The photos weren't great so I gambled a bit, but paid a very reasonable price because of the lack of photo quality, and the watch showed up in amazing condition. The case has wear on it, but has never been polished. My guess is that someone wore it for a couple of years, and then put it away. Comes on the H Link bracelet original to the reference number. Perfect birth year watch for my collection since I was also in the Air Force and enjoy the space historical significance. Anyway, I'm glad you found yours! I think they are really cool pieces.
