Episode Notes:
1. I used Kega Fusion to cover the games in this episode. My Game Gear is fully stock, and has no video output.
2. I show the Master System version of Castle of Illusion. It's the ROM I had at the time of making this video. It isn't 100% exact to the GG version, but close enough.
3. Shinobi isn't just the best game on the GG, it also has the best soundtrack. Awesome music in that one.
4. Just missing the cut were the Shining Force games, a few of the other Disney games, Gunstar Heroes, and a couple of the Sonic titles.
5. The opening and ending monologue's are set to other games I really enjoyed on the GG.
6. Music:
The opening and ending monologue's are set to music from the first Shinobi GG game.
7. The English patch for Royal Stone is at romhacking.net
www.romhacking.net/translatio...
8. Many of these have Master System equivalents you can get if you are so inclined.

I'm probably in the minority, but the SEGA 8-Bit systems had my favorite sound chips of all time. I LOVE the 'pings', 'hums' and 'whistles' it creates. I own a Gear Gear, but honestly, I mainly used it to play Master System games with the Master Gear convertor. I probably played 'Columns' more than any other Game Gear game.

It's funny really, the switch has the same amount of battery life as the game gear but nobody seems to talk about that much. I love my switch, and I'd argue its portable in the same way the game gear was, in that as long as where you're travelling to has a wall socket then you can play it as much as you want. There's nothing wrong with that. You can't really carry a big console with you on holiday, and also you'd need a TV to be there. The game gear was a portable master system and the switch is a portable Wii U and they're both great. But the jokes about the game gear battery life never end even decades later.

@@soulripper31 no you didn't. Everyone with a game gear had the wall adapter, and/or rechargeable batteries, so in that sense it's not different from a smartphone or a switch (and also, everyone with a gameboy had these things too, because they ate through batteries really fast too, not as much as the game gear, but almost; going back and trying to use a gameboy these days, it's really quite shocking how short a time they last, I don't remember it being this bad when I was a kid, but then my parents were paying for the batteries back then, not me). Anyway smartphones, switch, game gear, game boy, they're all portable systems. Because it's a different thing to, let's say, trying to carry a gaming PC with you on the train with you to see your parents. I can carry my switch with me everywhere and use it anywhere, just like with a game gear or smartphone. It's great

I re-capped my Game Gear a couple of years ago, and enjoyed getting back into it. My list differs quite a bit, but it's all fun. A few that I really love: Ax Battler- it gets crapped on and called a weak Zelda II clone. Well, Zelda II is my favorite NES game, so I welcomed a clone. It's clunky, but fun. Zenki- super underrated platformer that any GG fan should play. It's awesome. Woody Pop- I initially bought it because the name made me giggle, but it's a really good Breakout/Arkanoid-style game, and a good play.

Great topic, list, and video. First, I will say that I think Road Rash looks quite impressive for the 8-bit hardware. And Rister looks extremely impressive, and it plays great. The Game Gear extended the lifespan of the Master System allowing us to see what the hardware could do when pushed further. And we see the results of that in Ristar and Gunstar Heroes. I finally got around to trying the Shinobi games a few years ago. I consider them both to be the top two games on the platform. I think I preferred part two when I played, but they were definitely close in quality and I can easily see it going either way. I remember playing a good bit of various Sonic games, which I mostly liked. Dragon Crystal was weird but fun, though there's a huge difficulty spike toward the end and it has some other quirks that make it hard to recommend. I remember liking Ax Battler and Super Monaco GP as well. I even really liked the first Mortal Kombat game on it at the time. I recall also playing Fatal Fury on the system. It wasn't as easy to tell which games on the system were the best, so I was very experimental with it and my library reflected that.

Man I loved the Game Gear. I remember using the TV tuner in college to watch the new at the time Batman the animated series. I definitely think that Sega knocked the ball out of the park with both Shinobi games. Some of my other favorites include: Sonic the Hedgehog, Samurai Shodown, King of Fighters, Land of Oasis, Columns, Space Harrier, Mortal Kombat, and GLOC.

I had never heard of the game gear when it was still supported, but a few yrs later i had discovered it in collections on the gamecube. I believe i had a plug and play console with a game or 2 on it, but they were sonic games. Since discovering it, ive thought this console was really cool. Always feel as though i missed out as a kid.

Man I am glad you made a Game Gear video 👍. Even happier that you showed Lucky Dime Caper starting Donald Duck, this is by far one of my favorite games on the system besides the Shinobi ones of course. Other games Iiked a lot: Land of Illusion, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man. I remember playing Tom and Jerry and surprisedly enjoying it. Lastly, Taz Mania was a pretty good port to the Game Gear too.

Robocop vs Terminator was also released on Master System (at least over here in NZ). The GG port of 'Castle of Illusion' looks identical to the Master System port and I have always preferred that version to the 16-bit Megadrive/Genesis version. Glad to see you share that opinion 😊 Great video and good timing on this too as I've got a set of capacitors on the way so I can recap my GG 😁 I only own Columns but have a bunch of SMS games, so will purchase a Master gear/gear master converter asap 😎

Randomnly finding this video 2 years late and likely commenting into the void. The GG was always my fav system I spent a lot.of time with mine in the early-mid 90s. Fav games were Jurassic Park, NBA Jam, Sonic Chaos, and Madden 95 among several.others.

  • @sega32xxx14

Oddly the only person I knew to have a Game Gear in the early-mid 90s was my grandfather's 2nd wife's son in law, so I didn't get to play it very much then, he was also extremely protective of it, had the big magnifying glass thing and always had it on the little metal kickstand on his coffee table haha. But one of the games he had for it was GG Aleste 2, and I remember being SO blown away by that game, and even Sonic 2, but especially the prior. As a young Gameboy owner that shit just felt like it was in a completely different league, no comparison, and made me feel like the GB must have been a rip off or scam or something lol. Never ended up with one before I got a Nomad in 97 until I inherited one from a friend in 2000 or so. It's battery life was definitely unacceptable, but the thing absolutely felt incredibly ahead of it's time.

The Game Gear is definitely a system I need more time with, but my favorite game on the system has to be Tails Adventure. Not many Sonic platsplorer games, so it's a treat, and you don't even play as him! GG Shinobi 1 and 2 are def right after. Great video! I'll have to check some of these ports out, been meaning to try out Ristar on GG.

It's been a long time since I played a Game Gear and I don't remember the games looking as good as they do. Usually it's the opposite when it comes to videogames and my memory. Pretty curious but I know the screens can get pretty bad so maybe that's the cause. I had no idea about a lot of these games so I'm actually excited to track these down. As a big Road Rash fan myself I actually think the Game Gear version looks impressive for the hardware. Royal Stone looks awesome. Thanks for the excellent video.
