The Herculean mission David had set himself in East Yorkshire, to capture the seasons in all their variety, had both a quotidian and superstar dimension, here on display side by side. His painting had to co-exist
with the routines of the local farming community, in this case making way for a giant tractor. There were also interruptions by calls from a media increasingly aware of his presence in East Yorkshire, in this case two requests are forwarded by local friend and fellow painter Tony Hogan.

Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood - outside, in all weathers, through the seasons - culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors. It’s an inspiring story of a painter in creative dialogue with nature and photography, and a revealing portrait of Britain’s most popular and celebrated artist.
