    Apologies for our error, Aiden McGeady was not a Scottish international and played for the Republic of Ireland. Please feel free to leave comments telling Joe how wrong he was for saying it. Seb also made a mistake: Jon Tootle is the expert boot-modifier, not Jon Bootle. Apologies to Jon at TootsBoots.

    Genuine question I am curious for Tifo to answer, why does French club football seem to have historically underperformed so much in the Champions League? France is a large and wealthy country, with a huge footballing tradition and a highly decorated national team. Yet, French clubs only won the UCL once in history, much less than the other big 4 leages, but also far below Portugal and the Netherlands.

    They are great in developing talents but had a problem in keeping them, I guess. For 98 final WC, they only had 2 players playing in French club starting for them, Barthez and Guivarch

  • @hashimnoufal4292

    @hashimnoufal4292

    I can answer that, The reason for this is that the money came in quite recently compared to other clubs who had developed facilities already. And french teams became a part of the top 5 very recently. The main team competing for the champions league this season is PSG, who is known for bad spending and chemistry. Knowing this we can say that they aern't as prepared and also the tactics that they can handle are limited to a certain league or level. This is the same reason why FC Barcelona won the league but Real madrid finished ahead of them in the champions league

  • @hashimnoufal4292

    @hashimnoufal4292

    And to make it worse most good french players are usually leaving as there is less competition and future in the club. eg Mbappe

    French clubs can't go in debt, unlike everybody else. Taxes are also somewhat higher which makes spending more difficult. Even back then, the greatest players never stayed in France.

    At the age of about 19, Steve McManaman signed a lifetime deal with Umbro for £100,000 a year, thinking it was a great deal at the time. Some years later, he took Umbro to Court arguing they took advantage of his age when offering him a lifetime deal, and requested the contract be terminated as much better short term deals from other boot manufacturers were by then being offered. The Judge ruled he could terminate the Umbro contract and forego the £100,000 a year but that he couldn’t wear any other boot manufacturer’s branded boots in return. So for the remainder of his career he wore blacked out Adidas World Cups and Copa Mundials. Whether he was actually sponsored by Adidas I don’t know.

    There's a science to it, talk to a boot guy and you'll realize how much there is to it. Despite the complications though, the perennial question is "how much of a difference does this actually make?" I think most footballers invest in customization just for the *chance* that it might improve things, not because they're really convinced this new soleplate or upper will definitely advance their game

    Perhaps from their experience of wearing many different boots. Eg: I like the upper Kangaroo Leather in my Puma football boot for its touch and protection. But the Studs are a bit too long for AG/FG ground where I mostly play. I prefer my older Adidas Speedflow stud pattern over the one in my Puma boot.
