The music volume is a weird thing to balance. It often turns out louder in the finished result than it sounded during editing, leading me to err on the side of caution when adding it to a video. Especially since I've previously received comments stating the music was too loud/distracting.

Deinopidae are just the coolest! Glad they got the time to shine in their own video :)

I wish this spiders got more attention =( such a unique hunting method and a face that makes me only think of the sound Twhomps make in Mario 😂

how does the spider know how to do something like this?i've always wondered how a complex hunting mechanism like this evolves... amazing!!

I mean just evolution and need. They have really sensitive eyes so they cannot hunt during the day, or function at all during the day (you will see then hidden under leaves in the dark not moving until night) So if the spider is going to not move it needs a hunting style that fits that. And unlike orb weavers who's eyes don't melt in the sun, net casters can't exactly just make a Web in broad daylight and stay there and wait for food to come, as their eyes are way too sensitive for that. So there only real options are being an ambush predator, and giving their frame they can't be a like a wolf spider, or a tarantula, or a huntsman where they rely on speed and size to catch prey, because well net casters are both really small, and also not particularly strong for their size (really thin spindly legs compared to say a wolf spiders extremely strong front legs Then you factor in that their webs aren't sticky but wooly, and suddenly you have a spider that needs to stay still and wait patiently for its prey to stand a chance. And if you are going to hunt by staying still the entire time, it makes sense to have some kinda trap to capture food, so nets end up being the easiest solution for these spiders. Especially when you consider they live in Australia, a country that is really rough for smaller spiders given that there's so many bigger spiders like huntmans that want nothing more than to eat smaller spiders. Basically some baby spiders try using a net and it ends up being successful so the babies that made nets continue to procreate whereas the items don't, and that eventually leads ro their body shifting to maximise the efficiency of the style of hunting that worke Tldr: it's mostly just due to environment and their biology, a weak spider with long limbs, and great eyesight that's useless during the day.

I really enjoy your presentation style, the casual delivery of your staggering amount of knowledge and your dry humor make for a great combo. Net casting spiders are a group I really need to see, it’s a dream of mine to film the full sequence of them catching a bug in the net. Great stuff man!

Glad you enjoyed! I partially suspect that it’s because net-casters aren’t great for thumbnails, since they look more or less like a bundle of twigs.

​@BugsandBiology they are amazing for thumbnails if you show-off their eyes. But yeah the most eye catching part about them is the face, and if you dint notice the face they just look boring. It's my favourite spider by far tho because of the face, just so unique and beautiful

They do have a strangely unsettling appearance beyond the normal spider features. Both the eyes and the odd, twiggy shape.

I don’t find it that way at all it has this crisp old school documentary sound that really goes with the nature of what you’re filming. That’s just my take. Love the work please don’t stop.

Much appreciated! That is the style I tend to aim for, with a strong focus on storytelling, especially in videos that are less information-heavy. As for a better camera, well, maybe. My recent KZread earnings alone could probably pay for one, but at the same time, I'm not really in a position to be spending a large sum of money on new equipment when my current phone camera is perfectly useful in most situations.

I've been to Melbourne & Sydney while wishing to visit Queensland. After watching your footages on Aussie spiders & centipedes, my wish has just been stronger. Btw, your new spider icon is so cool, but I still miss the old centipede one! Perhaps, I'm a centipede guy, more so than as a spider one!

Lovely spider-did I read somewhere that they drop a poop as a target spot to help with accuracy when capturing prey? Your videos/narration are top notch👍

They really are super intriguing creatures. The way they hunt has easily got to be one of the most unique out of any spider, and seeing them construct their nets in real life is just something else.

1:05 i found a huntsman a few days ago with 5 legs, i felt sorry for the guy so i put him in my terrarium, 2 days ago he molted and now has all his legs back, ill keep him for a while until hes at full strength then release him back. Pretty cool, it can regrow all its missing legs at once

I first heard the net cast from monster bug wars, I first watcjed it when I was seven and the close ups on the spider's eyes scared me

"Why it's called that is.... Why it's called that." *rolls credits* Naming a genus must be a big honor, and I recall species named after pokemon like charizard or mewtwo, but "aha, ha" must be the single weirdest name. But net casting spiders are very cool, got to love the diversity of ways arthropods hunt, it's so much more varied than "I am spider and therefore sit in my web and do nothing else"

Why do people wanna go to the outer space to find aliens when we already have a collection of fascinating oddly-behaving animals on our planet?

I knew a little about those types of spiders, but I didn’t know their hunting details or how they are able to destroy and regenerate tissues so easily. They are having something quite similar to tool use actually. After all, araneomorph diversity is very high. I mostly know about tarantulas, a few larger true spiders, scorpions, and myriapods. Now I need to look if those spiders exist in Europe. They are quite fascinating.

Ogre faced spider or Net casting spider, and once I heard someone called it a sick spider for some reason.

That's fascinating that they digest their retinas to deal with daylight. Do you know if that's unique to subrufa, or is that common for the genus or even family?

@@BugsandBiology I obvious don't know either but I also think that it would be difficult to find anything of their predecesors. I doubt that anything could be found as a fossil. Given they do not realy have a body that leaves a great fossil do they? But looking at your other uploads (about the prehistory) you are obviously a way better judge about that then I'm.
