Hey Zak, I love your videos! My brother is adopting a rescue dog soon, and these videos have been a great way to get ideas on how to train our future family member! I wanted to add; a lot of people are complaining about the paid product promotions. I want to congratulate you on that; it's good to see a fellow content creator getting paid to do the thing he loves! It's a sign that you've really made it! If anyone wants to complain about the product promotions; content creators have to get paid too. No-one really wants to be a "starving artist". Zak is giving you amazing material for FREE. You haven't paid him a dime, so stop complaining about the fact that he is using KZread to give you all quality information, and gets paid for doing so. I think that is fantastic! Great work Zak, can't wait to see even more videos!

BE around people, with leash (and muzzle if necessary). The most critical thing is that YOU ARE CALM and totally NON REACTIVE like being around people is so normal it is boring. Your dog is incredibly sensitive to your bodylanguage, heartbeat, stress smells. He knows you better than you know you. If you are worried that your dog will misbehave or get weirded out and truly embarrass you in front of your friends HE WILL KNOW something is wrong. He won't know what to do because he wants to please you so badly he'll try too hard... So you have to BE A SUPREME ACTOR otherwise he will absolutely read the environment as NEW and unknowns and his normal doggy behavior will kick in when ever confronted with anything new. Dogs love routine. Predictability. Make circumstances you want your dog to understand as part of THE routine happen over and over again. Dogs learn more from stuff we do routinely than from choreographed training lessons. Important to have training become ROUTINE same time of day, same environment, same length of time unless the dog is tired, or sick. Then the training both the training sessions and the daily routine of YOUR life start taking off. Each lesson relates to the next lesson. So each subsequent DAY the learning gets faster and more embeded. Start with one person...does he wig out with one stranger? What is his comfort level now with people? What were his first experiences with people like? What is your home and life routine? How long are you separated daily? What are the skills he consistently does well? The skills that have been difficult? How much exercise does he get daily? And one more thing. Make sure he is well exercised before meeting friends..people. Tell you friends to NOT EVEN LOOK AT HIM. No touching, no engaging. Act as if he is invisible! If he lies down and is very relaxed a quiet stroke and calm voice of praise is great. Do this before working up to strangers on the street or starbucks! Your part is to act as if being around people is the more normal boring thing in the world...repeated for emphasis!

you're not dominant enough, your dog doesn't know you are the boss, try doing the same thing with gentle strokes instead of food, do this outside and only do training until he does it, playtime is always after training time

Favorite thing about training my dog, so far: Skye was an 8 month old owner surrendered pound puppy. Very sick from pneumonia, digestive problems while throwing up what appeared to be a child's leapfrog computer, and afraid to eliminate anywhere, his high-energy, loud personality was hidden for almost a month. When I started "release" (to get him to give up whatever he was chewing up at the time, ie: silk lampshade) I spend 30 minutes on the floor with "release" as the goal. Fetch was the game, "retrieve" (he's a lab-ish) the command to get it and return to me. Then, because he is crazy with energy at times, he had to "sit" to "release", the toy. The next morning I started a brief re-enforcement session but Skye would not give up the toy. He kept moving his head away from my hand. When I asked him "why won't you give it to me?" out of confusion, he sat, pulled his head away again. Then I realized what he was saying. I had neglected the "sit" command FOLLOWED by a scratch on his chest before "release". When I did it right he rewarded me with releasing the object. He's 2 now and recently learned that those shoes he brings me in hopes of a ?walk? are not random. I put on one, point towards the closet and say "find", and he brings me back THE CORRECT MATCHING SHOE. I have twenty or so shoes, boots, slippers, to choose from so this is amazing to me. Also, he gets shoes more often than he gets ?walk? so sometimes he is the only one who knows where the other shoe is. He is still crazy with energy, and I have bruises and scars to prove it, but with a regular run in the fields to calm him he is going to be an excellent assistant by 3 or 4. To late to make a long story short, I guess. Thank you for your great videos. I'm sure Skye will be so grateful that someone is finally training me! Barbara

I love the Zak George videos! I am a pet sitter who gets request after request for training the pups. I started watching these videos and using the techniques provided to teach the pups and inform the owners. So they know how to continue training when I am away. It's helped my clients gain confidence and pride in using my pet care services. Thanks so much Zak George! I'd say the best so far is getting one of my newest pups, Sydney, to roll over. She so excited to learn and rolls over with excitement and ease every time. It only took her a few minutes to learn. :-)

I have loved teaching my dog to come to me. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing her bounding across the space with a big smile and ears flopping. My heart wants to burst with joy! The least pleasant thing has been trying to get her to walk on a leash. She is so distracted by smells and sights--not much by people or other dogs--and she doesn't even respond to treats, no matter how smelly and wonderful the treats are! She starts out fine then begins to pull, pull, pull.

I have a Japanese Spitz puppy, we've had her for two weeks now and she's ten weeks old. I am so amazed at how incredibly intelligent she is and how easily she picks up new concepts, it's really motivating for both her and me. In the two weeks we've had her we've made real progress on a lot of training, both obedience and fun tricks. So far we've started working on 'Look At Me', 'Sit', 'Down', 'Up', 'Leave It', 'Let Go', 'Paw', 'High Five' and 'Roll Over' (she's so good at Roll Over I cannot believe it!) And, of course, we've been potty training and crate training her, too! I cannot tell you how much watching your videos has helped and encouraged me, I'm so glad to have found a trainer who focuses so much on the bond between you and your dog. My least favourite thing about training her is when I push her too far without realising and she get's frustrated and stops enjoying training; I want it to be fun for both of us! But I'm working on this and each training session has less frustrated episodes in and we're making real progress. Thanks again for all of the videos, keep it up!

Great video; makes me wish I'd had my sweet boy as a pup. To answer your question: Best thing about training Rodaidh would definitely be how excited we both get when he is in the zone and working well. Thing I like least so far is my inability to convey that we are not in a military zone and he needn't patrol the house and bark at every intruder (read neighbor child, squirrel, UPS guy...). He has that Border Collie drive to protect in spades and he will groan and grumble if I insist on an indoor voice because, seriously, that squirrel could have an Uzi hidden in its tail.

My third Chow would walk next to me, off-leash, around my neighborhood, sit next to me while I gardened, etc. He just wanted to be next to me. My fourth, and current, Chow does all kinds of tricks (I began teaching him at eight weeks. Whoever says you 'can't teach' a dog that young is missing some marbles), takes a treat from your hand so gentle, it falls out of his mouth half the time, and has an otherwise great temperament. If a stranger approaches me, though? Watch out. He doesn't even like my husband's friends that I don't care for. He totally picks up on my vibes. He's the best dog, ever - Chows are the best dogs, ever :)

Thanks, really great video!!! I'm a new dog owner (almost 4 weeks) with a rescued older dog (about 6 years old), he was already house trained when I got him and knows sit and high 5/shake, but it was hard for me to teach him how to stay and definitely how to come on command. This video really helped me to teach him exactly what I wanted to do, and after about 10 minutes we both had the hang of it and he was staying 9/10 times and I managed to get a few meters away for up to 30 seconds before he would break concentration. I know with a bit more training I will have him sitting and staying and coming when called, now that I know how to teach him :) thank you!!

My most favourite thing about training our pup is the connection I feel when it's all going so well! It's a wonderful feeling! My least favourite thing has been hitting those walls of frustration, anger and impatience inside myself and having it come out directed towards my puppy. However, those moments of frustration have been catalytic and have really deepened my desire to connect and understand my beautiful Baxter because the feeling of being frustrated by him was awful and I will not go there again!

Gotta love this guy. I have a rott/pitt mix. He's 5 months old. With these videos I had him sitting speaking potty/caged trained in a matter of a couple weeks. Potty training definitely the most time consuming. Teaching him speak was a blast. I can really see the uncertainty in his eyes because he truly didn't know what I wanted, but when he got it he is very confident in learning new ideas. Thanks Zak.

I looove these videos. I was at my whits end just a few days ago. Especially after interviewing a dog training who didn't inspire much confidence; at least not enough to part with the exorbitant fees he was charging. But I somehow stumbled on Zak George videos. You cannot imagine my excitement when I was able to teach my puppies how to sit. Suddenly it didn't seem so impossible anymore. Please Zak, do a video on training twin pups at a go. How do I keep either sister from interfering with the training and trying to grab the treat?

Thank you for the videos Zak! They are super helpful I have been watching every single one and told all my friends about them! I have a question on this video: My dog (Parsons Jack Russel 1 year old) DEFINITELY knows "come" BUT he chooses WHEN to actually come (he looks at my hand - if there is a treat yes he comes sprinting, if there is not .. well he looks around to see if there is anything more interesting and then comes) so if you would consider making any additional videos on how to actually make them listen also without treats it would be sooo perfect.Thank you again!

From my experience, I would recommend you never give a treat to a dog for coming. Simply call him in an exciting way, and he will come to you. Well, maybe you could call him in a motivating way and when he comes, offer your approval and your caress as a reward. Get your pet used to this.

Favorite thing has been seeing how fast she picks everything up, though it's not a surprise since she's a Border Collie. Least favorite is trying to find what kind of food she will actually work for... Turns her nose up at almost everything.

I love all these videos, the biggest criticism I have of them is that a lot of the repetitive work is cut out, and it does mask how many times you've got to do the same exercise sometimes. So a bit more fast forwarding instead of cutting would be appreciated.

My dog used to to that too. I just buy canned pineapple chunks and give her a few pieces: 3 or 4, in her bowl when she eats. (She's about 80 pounds). The pineapple smell in their poo is supposed to make them not want to eat it.

Hi Zak so I just bought my husband a 6 month old lab hound mix puppies if I'm saying that right! LOL anyway watching your videos to learn how to train him he is so adorable when should not be adopted him from a shelter whoever his owner was before did train him some. He is somewhat housebroken but he hasn't gotten to the point where he go to the door to tell if he's ever had to go to the bathroom. My biggest thing is teaching him how to stop jumping up on me and the family. And probably anybody else who comes through so I really enjoy your videos and I plan to work with him on today.

Wha? Most puppy classes around where I live start at 2-3 months or basically whenever your puppy is fully vaccinated. But generally speaking, you can also find trainers who are willing to take on a younger pup, especially if you already have a problem or are going into sport.

Perhaps they are 'traditional' trainers (who use harsh punishments likechoke chains/hitting etc.)?it used to be the case that lots of trainers would not train until dogs were a few months old because the harsh methods used could physically and psychologically break a tiny puppy. You occasionally find an old fashioned trainer who says "you can't start training until the dog is 6 months old".

Thank you for the thoughtful videos. I love watching them, Zak. I have enjoyed teaching my dog to turn on lamps using touchpads. I can now come in my back door, and he will go across the room and turn one on with his nose when I say, "light." We started when he was very young with touching my hand and worked up to touching a variety of objects.
