The Secret To Playing Quiet Chords On Piano

Музыка

In this tutorial, I'll show you an insider tip on playing chords and repeated notes on the piano as softly as you want. You can apply this technique tip to any piece of music, but I'll be using a couple of Chopin preludes (Opus 28, numbers 4 and 6) to demonstrate both left hand and right hand chord technique.

I have been experimenting a bit with loudness control. It seems to me, that it is much easier to control the loudness when the fingers are in contact with the keys the whole time up to and including what I intepret as mezzo forte. To play what i percieve as forte and beyond, I have to lift the hand before I “attack” the keys. There is some loudness control with “the lifted hand” strategy. But the “touch before pressing” strategy seems to work better for me 😊

Thanks so much Marina for this video. I used your tip of laying by the pool with the hand in the water that has the gentle waves for my quiet accompaniment of the right hand in my Schubert Impromptu Op 90 No. 3 thinking of the hand on the water with the wave under the wrist bringing it up while I stay touching the keys of the G flat major broken chord and it allows me to play each accompaniment note so lightly but for an equal length of time to the note beside it. I can see how this will be helpful in so many pieces so thank you so much. All the best, Brian

@@ThePianoKeys Yes Marina another expression you used which I find so helpful is playing the weight that is in the finger in the keybed. I rebuilt pianos all my life and I can fully understand when you say this as it give a real place to anchor the relaxed arm weight! When you are making the melody notes sing, would you say that you are snapping the fingers towards you to work for the overtones? Thanks for all your help. Brian

    @@TruthSurge you have a DX7 that's still working??

  • @TruthSurge

@@ThePianoKeys ya. I had an M1 but only for the key action. I wanted keys that felt really light but not synth light. the M1 and DX7 have weighted keys but not like piano weighted but... like 15% more than just some standard synth from back in the day. So, I had a DX7 back in the 80s but sold it. Later bought an M1 and sold it. Later bought a DX7. so... I don't use the sounds, just the keys. I use it to trigger samples on my PC. Sound libraries like oh Sound Iron stuff, Omnisphere, Spitfire Audio strings stuff, etc. But a few keys I broke and fixed and they aren't quite right. But I can just avoid that octave. I don't PLAY so I can just play an octave lower and the transpose it up later. If I played more I prob would get something better ref key action and modulation controls. But this works well enough. Not great but I'm not doing soundtracks for a living so.... I do voice acting for a living, btw.
