a lesson from the scientific community - when taking readings, measurements, etc in a team, you should not reveal your information until after they also perform the same reading or measurement. if you do, you can subconsciously bias your teammate in to an answer. so, don't tell your partner what board you're trying to hit, just ask them to watch. if you tell them ahead of time you're trying to hit 5, when you hit 6 they'll often subconsciously bias towards believing you hit it.

I’ve often times set up my cell phone and taken videos to watch after each ball. It’s also a great way to analyze and/or diagnose swing, timing and even hand position issues.

When I coach players targeting I just simply tell them to use tapes to put it on their intentional target and then watch whether they hit it or not. Some of course can hear easily than they can see then I just put more tapes on that target so they can hear a click when ball goes over target. Thank you for this tip anyway it great to remember these things

I generally aim at the dots since it helps me from pulling on the ball when I look at the arrows in the past. But when I play inside the target, when looking at the dots, I noticed that I missed two boards to the left but get strikes generally. I started drifting to the left and can modify my drifting to the left depending on how much aim I want to go for. If I roll the ball straighter to the pocket, I generally hit my target most of the time.

Due to bowling 20 years and throwing thousands and thousands of shots I tend to bowl without aiming for a board. I throw most spares by moving my feet and aiming at the same strike spot I just used. I have 212 avg right now.

Because of dominant eye, the perception of the target may vary for each player day to day. Great stuff in discussing the topic Coach! For our team practices we use the Boardbox but also put tape on the lane at our intended target. So in Heather's case we would have tape on 13. It's an extra feedback mechanism for the player, and it keeps the Board Box honest. :)

A year off because pandemic, and now my feet are drifting 5 boards left.... and I'm missing my target 5 boards left. I never had this problem before. Not sure I want to compensate and make adjustments for that, would rather fix the drift.

I’ve noticed something probably unrelated since practice yesterday... I’m taking too big of steps in my approach. Maybe I’m shorter than many of the people I watch, but I do believe I might be stretching my steps too often and that can’t be helping my consistency.

If you miss what you are targeting by 2 boards left, do you compensate by looking at 2 boards right and/or move yourself right and target the original board?

The advice in this video is to shift your aim point so your starting position would remain the same, you would just aim 2 boards over.

  • @insidebowling

Good question! Most bowlers will have a certain target distance that they're most comfortable with and use most of the time, no matter what that distance may be. It's good to try changing it up and train yourself to look at different distances. Sometimes looking at different distances can slightly change how the ball reads the lane so for some bowlers it can be a good lane play and ball motion adjustment. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching our videos!!

THIS. Pause the video at 2:20. You can see she is CLEARLY hitting the 14 board while aiming for the 13 board. To me, any shot within one board of the target is spot-on, even for a professional. NOBODY hits their target board dead-on perfectly every time.

I'm tired of this BS. The reason this misconception lives on is because eye dominance is real. The problem is that it has no application in bowling. It does not matter if you "See" the ball hit 10 and it actually hits 8 or 12. What matters is what the ball does. Your variation does not change. think about it. If you aim for 10, you see the ball hit 10 and it strikes, are you going to go back and adjust because in reality it hit 8? No . You adjust off what you see. The only time it actually matters is if you are playing the gutter or working with a coach. Knowing the difference between what you see and where the ball actually is can help you keep the ball on the lane. Coaches need to know the phenomenon so they can adequately communicate with the person they are coaching. The coach should not assume the bowler missed their target. They should be asking if the bowler hit where they were looking. Bowling is a game of adjusting, not hitting a preset board.

Thank you. I'm a lefty but I'm right eye dominant. I shoot a gun and bow right handed because of this. For any starting player, so much will change until that player learns what their "regular" shot is. You can aim and hit the same spot but have moved your feet two boards and alter your shot. You're going to make small adjustments based on what you are "seeing" and the results.
