The Secret Psychology of Attack on Titan | ANALYSIS

Ойын-сауық

As "Attack on Titan", "Shingeki no Kyojin" season 4 begins to roll out, I wanted to explore some some dark, sinister ideas Hajime Isayama laced throughout the story starting all the way back with season 1. With substantial psychological influences from Sigmund Freud, Erich Fromm, and Carl Jung, "Attack on Titan's" genius knows no bounds, and I'm hoping to open a dialogue on said sentiments.

    In a specific interview when isayama was asked about his favourite character he said:- " i initially thought perhaps armin, but lately, i'd say it's maybe eren after all. Initially, i believed this type of character was necessary for the story, so i wrote him in, but actually, with him came a sort of a feeling that he was a part of an inner me that i didn't want to see " I think you hit the nail in the coffin with this video.

    Attack on Titan shaked my perception of the world. It was a huge shift when it made me realize that morality is subjective. And the depth of the philosophy of AOT remain free to be explored and interpreted. Also your video was really awesome, and I've a request - once the final season is over please make an in depth philosophical discussion of AOT. Especially covering the topics of morality freedom, and justice.

    Really great material. Finally somebody gives credit to s1 for commentary on jungian "shadow". To me the scene that always nailed it was Eren's deformed titan face about to eat crying Annie. This contrast, elevated by Armin's quote of discarding humanity, was never meant to be a naive notion along the lines "you cause deaths, destroy, look monstrous, you're just as bad" but as a call out of our ignorance that prevents us from seeing that we aren't much different because we willingly close our eyes and ears to not only perspective of those we like to label as pure evil but knowledge in general due to growing complacent. Dehumanization in order to render understanding worthless and conform to propaganda filler society. Ignorance - the true villain of Attack on Titan from the very beginning.

  • @Reddrik

    @Reddrik

    To be honest, I dropped aot back in 2017 after a few episodes. However I picked it up again, and now I feel like this is a new experience. Nothing has ever made me feel the way aot makes me feel while watching it, and I think is because is really raw and human. We see Eren change his perspective about life, and what it takes to survive. As we go along in the story, it is clear that is not about the titans anymore, it's about what humans are capable of in order to survive. This latest season is not fun and games anymore because life is not like that. AoT is in a different universe but their conflicts are so realistic to the ones we go through in real life. There is a part of me that doesn't it want to keep watching because I know it's not going to be a happy ending. Because life is like that

  • @Reddrik

    @Reddrik

    3 жыл бұрын

    And that honesty, that transparency about life, is difficult to find in other works, let alone another anime. AoT definitely is lightning-in-a-bottle stuff.

It is confirmed that this present airing season is going to end adapting until manga chapter 116 and in April the manga is going to end at the chapter 139, so I'm giving youthis information in case that you are interested, otherwise you could read it all once the anime is finished (I see the posibility of that being this year almost imposible) or decide to not read it at all but I think you would be missing a great deal of details and certain depths/perspectives that the anime sadly have to cut due to time issues. Great framework for analyzing AOT. It makes me wonder how far you can take it... Like why are the walls full of titans? Perhaps it suggests that civilization could only have ever been built by using our animal sides. I wonder if we can go further, like I feel that Ymir, the idea of the founding titan in the royal bloodlines, etc., all feel symbolic in ways I haven't figured out yet... I will say it doesn't seem like you can't keep this framework, at least not as strongly, past getting to Marley. At that point the story wants to explore real-world issues about war and fascism more, and thus does feel less yungian and symbolic.

  • @Reddrik

    @Reddrik

    Whether or not Isayama consciously knew of Bly’s work in mythopoetics, you definitely see some allusions there. A man’s individuation starts with betraying the mother, as Bly wrote. What did Eren do by joining the scouts? What did he do by putting himself in harm’s way? And most vitally, what did he do by becoming Titan? Certainly none of this fit within his mother’s view of her perfect little special boy. One could argue the entire series is just a long compilation of Eren betraying his mother.

    I was just talking to my gf about how nature is violent,Animals killing other animals in order to eat and she said that’s wrong but I said they have to do that in order to survive but then she said are humans killing humans natural and I said of course not,But in my head I thought about that question and this video was recommended to me and as I was listening it reminded me of the tendencies we have in our head,How serial killers show us their “titan” form and how we put up our “walls” in order to not look crazy but thought about our duality with our “Safe” nature and with our Primal nature.Nevertheless this video is a good way of explaining,Good Job!

    This reminds me of something a psychologist once said, forgot his name sorry, but it was something like embrace your inner psychopath but dont act on it obviously. It was in discussion about trauma, that its easier to recover from trauma caused by someone else's horrific actions towards you because if you embrace your inner psychopath its easier to accept what evil other humans are capable of, like it doesnt come as too much of a shock to your psyche. I'm probably botching it but this video reminded me of that in a way.

    While watching this video I could tell I finally found someone who understands me. I try explaining the path I chose. But I always feel like I fall short in my explanation. Others have called me both an angel and a demon. But that’s just it, I’m neither and yet I’m both. Humanity is no better or worse than a demon or an angel. Others just simply fear demons cause society says they are evil. But in reality, we are the demons that society fears. But that isn't a bad thing. We can learn how to use it to benefit ourselves and others
