The Secret of Power in Prayer by Charles Spurgeon - Sermon
John 15:7
Preached on January 8, 1888
Charles Haddon Spurgeon is one of the most influential Christian preachers of all time. He was born in Kelvedon, England, on June 19, 1834, and grew up in a family of devout Christians. His father and grandfather were both pastors, and he was raised in an environment that encouraged a deep love and knowledge of the Bible.
Spurgeon's Early Life and Conversion
Spurgeon had a difficult childhood. He suffered from poor health and was often forced to stay indoors, reading books to pass the time. However, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it helped him develop a love for reading and learning.
At the age of 15, Spurgeon attended a prayer meeting at a local Primitive Methodist chapel, where he heard a message that changed his life forever. The preacher read from Isaiah 45:22, which says, "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else." As Spurgeon later recalled, "I had been waiting to do fifty things, but when I heard that word, 'Look!' what a charming word it seemed to me! Oh, I looked until I could almost have looked my eyes away."
Spurgeon's Ministry and Legacy
Spurgeon quickly became a popular preacher, and his fame soon spread throughout England and beyond. He was known for his plain, direct preaching style, which was both engaging and convicting. He had a unique ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds, and his sermons were widely read and distributed.
In 1854, Spurgeon became the pastor of New Park Street Chapel in London, which later became the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Under his leadership, the church grew rapidly, and he was soon preaching to crowds of thousands. He also founded a pastors' college, which trained hundreds of ministers and missionaries.
Spurgeon's influence extended far beyond his own lifetime. He is often referred to as the "Prince of Preachers," and his sermons and writings continue to inspire and encourage Christians today. His book "Lectures to My Students" is still widely read by pastors and seminary students, and his devotional classic "Morning and Evening" has been a daily source of inspiration for countless believers.
Spurgeon's Theology
Spurgeon was a staunch defender of the Reformed faith, and his theology was rooted in the doctrines of grace. He believed in the sovereignty of God in salvation, and he rejected the idea that human beings could earn their own salvation by their own efforts. He preached that salvation was entirely the work of God, and that it was a free gift that could only be received by faith.
At the same time, Spurgeon was deeply committed to evangelism and missions. He believed that the gospel should be preached to all people, and he was a passionate advocate for the spread of the gospel throughout the world. He once said, "If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for."
Spurgeon's Legacy Today
Spurgeon's influence can still be felt today, both in the church and in the wider culture. His emphasis on the importance of personal faith and devotion to God continues to inspire believers around the world. His commitment to the doctrines of grace has also been a source of encouragement for many, who find in his teachings a firm foundation for their own faith.
One of the key reasons for Spurgeon's enduring legacy is his unwavering commitment to the Bible. He once said, "I have a great need for Christ: I have a great Christ for my need."

I ask this question because some people have taken the liberty of changing his words or omitting them all together, the Kelvedon Edition is a horrible example of just that. I say to all who would change his words, or the words of historical hymns like Toplady's Rock of Ages, etc.....if you don't like what they say because you can't stand their doctrine,, go write your own sermons or hymns, otherwise you only become a name dropper.
