The secret ingredients of architect Laura Dewe Mathews' 'gingerbread house'

For the third film in our series, Homing In, our co-founder, Matt Gibberd, follows a line of crumbs to the home of architect Laura Dewe Mathews. Known locally as the ‘gingerbread house,’ there is creativity in every detail of Laura’s home, which has been cleverly stitched into its site in east London.
As with each of the films in the series, we aim to show how adherence to five key design principles - space, light, materials, nature and decoration - allows you, in Matt’s words, “to live a better and more fulfilled life.” Here, we examine Laura’s key ingredients - the materials that make up the gingerbread house she shares with her family. As she describes it, architecture is all a process of balance and elevation: “You need carbs,” she says. “You need spice, a texture element, and a moment of joy …”

This is one of the greatest series that is true to architecture. Architects telling stories that explain the narrative of their work in a clear vision. Nothing shallow and “artsy” like what a lot of architecture videos have become. Bravo team

A great mix of cozy and modern. Ì love the way the outside facade hides the beauty of the courtyard . What a gem.

Love a lot about this but don't appreciate that she didn't create more of a space to play for her daughter in the back yard.

Great interview. You should get a Netflix show, as any “design” show at the moment sounds (and looks) like a joke. It would be amazing to bring real creatives to the masses. 😊

Thank you! This is a truly magical home, with a palette of materials and thoughtful arrangement of space and light that just made me sigh aloud in delight. Thank you so much for showing us through, and for sharing some of the considerations behind the choices and design, and thank you again for this series, which is one of my favourite things on KZread.
