I believe this is a 5512. The 5513 were not certified chronometers
I’ve had my Ref.5512 for 48 years,, six years ago, a complete service by Rolex including a fresh Flip-Lock bracelet. I wore my Submariner every day in heavy industry...love this wonderful timepiece that’s marked the time of my life. Only regret, not saving the box and paperwork. My heirs do know the value of this piece. Expecting my first grandchild (boy) in January. The thought of him wearing it as a grown man, makes me smile.

Almost! It's a Rolex Submariner reference 5512. The 5517 is the military version (called Milsub between watch nerds) of this period of Submariners which features slightly different design features in accordance with British military specifications. The Milsub is highly sought after. Generally speaking, the basic civilian model of the Submariner in that time frame was the 5513. In contrast to Steve McQueens 5512, the 5513 did not have a Chronometer Certification by the Swiss COSC, which is why it lacks the additional two lines of text on the dial "Superlative Chronometer etc". The 5512 is highly collectible as it is not only a step up in terms of timekeeping, but also alot rarer. The last model of this era is the reference 5514, which was a special and somewhat experimental production run for the commercial dive company COMEX. From this model, the Submariner evolved into the Sea-Dweller, which has far greater depth ratings and is suited for professional divers.

According to Phillips its a 5513: In fact, the present watch is the earliest McQueen-owned Submariner known, a reference 5513 dating to 1964 and gifted to Loren Janes likely in the mid-to-late 1970s as recollected by the surviving Janes family members.

I just checked with Phillips. It indeed is a 5513, however it had its dial swapped during service with a four-line (5512-style) dial. The period correct glossy gilt dial is included in the lot.
