The Secret CAT Route

A few times a day, a small part of the West Perth CAT Loop is covered by a different route: 004. Let's see what it looks like in this video.
UPDATE 16/04/2023: THIS ROUTE HAS BEEN QUIETLY WITHDRAWN from service with a recent change of the CAT timetable. There was no announcement but it just disappeared... I didn't get to go on the last service :(

Hello guys! If you haven't heard yet, but I'm sure most of you have as it's all over the news, the Armadale Line will be shutting down for 18 months from early next year to facilitate METRONET works. (Yes this means that they will open by June 2024 at least, unlike they originally said, but they always delay this stuff anyway). I will make sure to make lots of videos about it next year, including a farewell to Welshpool Station on the last day of operation as it is closing down. Make sure you go on the Building for Tommorow website to answer the survey about replacement services if you use the Armadale Line regularly. Anyway, that's all from me, the news has already explained everything. And in case you're wondering where the next station video is, I will be delaying it for a while to extend the amount of time we still have with upcoming videos for that playlist. Expect videos about bus changes in the western suburbs in the next few weeks, including the Purple CAT of course!

@Armadale Garbo I agree, the new projects are great. In the survey I said they should make some express replacement routes from Armadale and Kelmscott over to Cockburn so then you can catch the train after that. That would be pretty cool, a replacement route that doesn't run along the rail line.

It may have changed, but there were usually a lot more 004s. In 2020 I seem to recall it was turned into more West-Perth only trips (002s), rather than dropping passengers (usually for the train) at Raine Sq. and looping round on a 'dead run' to start the 004 again. It's quite possible they still don't show up online, or there were significant cutbacks associated with the introduction of the Purple CAT. These supplementary trips keep the frequency more often than every 5mins. In spite of this, prior to COVID, it was quite easy to fill even an artic to full and leave passengers behind at certain times during the peak. So the service is designed to meet demand on the busiest section of the Red CAT, which is in West Perth. COVID has probably diminished the need for these services - although throughout weekdays I think the West Perth Only trips still run. Palmyra depot is (or was) responsible for many of the supplementary trips on the Yellow (003) and Red (002/004) CATs in the peaks. Approximately 2/3 of the fleet there are gas buses, so the chances are that's what you'll see on these trips; although it depends on the shift construction and vehicle availability on any given day. For example, in the school holidays, you might see an artic, then next school term's shifts are all using Volvo rigids (i.e. they're out on nightshift or doing CircleRoute). There are several city services Palmyra run (111, 114, 115, 158, 160 & 910) which the bus may do before, or after, or before and after these extra trips. At times they might have come straight from the depot or another interchange on the network.

Thanks for the info. I too think it changed because I recall the 004 being a regular thing, but I don't know when it was changed. Now I understand why they are gas buses.

I think you and a lot of other people are mistaking this for the 002 (Red CAT West Perth loop). That one still runs every second CAT during the peak around the west part of the Red CAT loop, but the 004 only runs from Parliament House to Perth and vice versa.
