The SECRET BMW Engine that You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I tell the story behind the Goldfisch V16, a prototype engine developed by BMW in the late 1980s that never made it into production. I cover everything from the story behind its development, to its differences in performance and specifications, and why the engine was never put into production. So if that interests you, you should give it a watch. Hopefully you enjoy. I won't be offended if you don't though.
Special thanks to Gavin Farmer and his article "Secret Seven" for providing a lot of insight in to the development of this engine.

    Rowan Atkinson knew about it, and was the reason why it was used...because he's so into cars he knew that the "Rolls" had been experimentally designed for a V16 and he specifically asked for it.

    Awesome video. I’ve had two E32s. A 88 735I that I did a suspension upgrade to all B7 Alpina parts and a 89 750 IL. The in-line six after replacing the factory exhaust was faster than the V12 car in the quarter-mile and would get to 155mph three seconds quicker. You need to do a video on the hydrogen powered V12 experimental car that they worked on. Go into the fact that the oil companies shut down that idea by refusing to distribute hydrogen at gas stations.

It was said that BMW did secret market research and found that the car had incredible appeal for the very rich -especially the Arabs -AND YET BACKED DOWN FROM PUTTING IT INTO PRODUCTION EVEN THOUGH THEY WOULD HAVE HAD AN ORDER BOOK FULL FOR 10 PLUS YEARS -DEFINITELY A MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO STAMP THEIR MARK FOREVER ON RR !!.

    Once you get up to eight cylinders and four liters turbocharging, rather than adding more cylinders, start making a lot of sense. It is no coincidence that both BMW and Mercedes have this type of configuration in the their lineup while V12's are exceedingly rare. Nice video of this historic mad project.

    IMO it was simply a business decision. The V16 prototype produced only marginal performance improvements over the V12 so they decided against it.

  • @peterj5751

    @peterj5751

    Plus the packaging in the prototype clearly isn’t viable for a production car so they would have had to modify the front to swallow the engine and keep the radiators there. I expect that tooling to do that would have been more costly than the engine itself. It was cool though.

    The bigger engines really showed the law of diminishing returns back in the day. I had a 6pot M50 that was 75bhp/litre while the V8s were down to 60-odd and the V12/V16 in the high 50s. I've always presumed it was attempt to keep the fuel economy in some semblance of sensible!
