I never had any issues with my N14 Mini’s. Not sure why the media says not reliable. To me it has to do with the driver not the car. As long as you top off your oil and not letting your chain rattle sound that your Neighboor 300 ft away can hear. Do the required maintenance and they will last for a long time. One of my N14 Mini’s has 224K miles and still running strong!

"As long as you top off your oil" should not be in the description of a quality car. None of my cars or trucks burn oil and they are American, Japanese and German; all of them have close to 200K miles on them. Burning oil should not be acceptable in any vehicle.

Hey. Mine is a 2012 R56 Cooper S with the 1.6 litre Turbo N18 BMW Peugeot Engine. It is an absolute hoot. Completely stock except for a nice growly Magnaflow exhaust. And I ve put on these Michelin Pilot Sports 4 soft rubber tubeless tyres 205/55/16 size which are phenomenal. The run flat tyres just do not work for us here in India. I believe of all the new modern BMW mini coopers this particular model truly is the modern classic!

Thanks for the reply. I'm in the market for a quick fun car and the Mini sure checks a lot of points. From what I've read after 2012 they changed the last part that was prone to failure: the water pump, from plastic to metal.

@The Miniac. I encountered a problem in my Cooper today for the first time. Engine missing, stumbling and a loss of power and then the engine light came on (yellow and half) and it said there was a problem with the emission and it went into limp mode. This was in my neighbourhood so I limped home. I had it checked with the OBD 2 scanner and BimmerLink tool and it returned faults with the injectors. We scanned it again with the Carly Scan tool and it said the same thing. And then, surprisingly, once the scanner was unplugged, all the check engine lights and all the error codes vanished. We DID NOT erase them manually. Then I re started the car and revved it and it didn’t miss a beat and nor did the engine check lights and error messages flash again. I switched off and let it be for a half hour and then went back again and re started it. Again while revving it it didn’t miss a beat and nor did any of the check engine lights and messages come on again. What could this gremlin be?

@@TheMINIac It cant be bad petrol because I am very particular as to where I fill. And the base grade available everywhere in India is 91 Octane. Premium Petrols are there from all the major companies, but mostly these only have detergents added. Recently they have launched 100 Octane petrol in select places but the price is a clean 50% higher than standard petrol. Saying this, mine is a 9 year old car and hence I will be taking it to the garage soon for a thorough checkup. I will also add a recommended fuel injector cleaner and octane booster like STP or similar the next time I fill petrol. Can only do all this once these localised lockdowns ease off a bit. Until then the poor little Chilli Red Cooper can sit and rest quietly under cover….

So hello The MINIAC. My Cooper S R56 has been off the road since May 15th 2021. The first month was LOCKDOWN. The second month has been in the workshop. So now we realise after much R&D with the scanners and fault codes and consulting with friendly experts and researching on the Internet, that it is the PCV Ventilation Hose and valve that is causing trouble because of age….my car is 9 years old. And parts can sometimes fail in an unpredictable manner. The valve is a moulded part and cannot be repaired. So I have had to rush about and buy parts online at Pelican parts, ECS Tuning and Mini Mania, all from the US. Because the fulfillment times if I buy from BMW India, takes a very long time, since they also mostly have to bring in parts for my model the R 56 S, from Germany. These cars are not very common in India and hence they dont keep a lot of parts in stock.

If it’s a low mileage well taken care of car, I don’t see a problem with it. Higher mileage, you probably should be mechanically inclined. I had a JCW Clubman at 105,000 miles and didn’t have any real serious issues. Luck of the draw and sometimes it’s a matter of how well the previous owner maintained it.
