Great video, Simon, but a couple of inaccuracies, the most significant of which was that Putin was NEVER the head of the KGB. Putin worked as a KGB foreign intelligence officer for 16 years, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before resigning in 1991 to begin a political career in Saint Petersburg. He moved to Moscow in 1996 to join the administration of president Boris Yeltsin.

It was the stadium. Even to this day when you visit the football stadium in Grozny, there's a dozen police officers patting you down thoroughly. They even pried my powerbank to check if it wasn't an explosive. And Ramzan was there as well, watching the game.

It's often between 50,000 and 100,000. 200,000 is a very high end estimate, and military casualties numbered as high as 30,000 on both sides in the conflict

Most of my college roommates (my second diploma was in the mid-2010’s) were Russian- one of them (born in the mid-80’s) mentioned at one point that even decades later most Russian landlords will NOT rent to Chechens due to the apartment bombings that happened. I don’t remember what we were talking about for that remark to come up but he didn’t go into much detail about why at that point.

Is that war still going on, or did it finally actually end at some point? (Genuine question. I don’t closely follow the news, so while I remember the media storm when it started, I never found out what happened once it fell off of the top stories after a year or so!)

Did people forget that russian terrorists bombed flats in moscow blaming it on chechens so they can break the peace tresty? Also what has the islamic deserter group to do with the chechen army at that time. It was a defected group acting on its own so to put the blame on the whole chechen goverment under maskhadov is pruely done so to have a reason to break the peace treaty

I find it shocking that Russia (as a political entity, not a cultural one) is perfectly content with slaughtering its or scarring its own military one generation at a time. I'm American so it's not like we've unlocked the secret to breaking the cycle but still...it genuinely feels like the answer is right in front of our faces

Are hundreds of thousands of battle-scarred troops good for Russia? For their economy? For the culture? And I still find it shocking that Americans bomb civilians more than any other nation in the world calling it "rightful". I also find it shocking that for some reason Russians are seen as "murderers" but Americans are seen as "Liberators" even tho they have flattened multiple countries and killed millions since WW2.

Bullshit not true at all they knew that these were a group of defected islamists acting on their own that had nothing to do anymore with the chechen army under the chechen government led by president maskhadov. Thats why they started to bomb their flats all over russia. They terrorised their own country, blamed it on chechens. They got exposed later but the ones who exposed the bombings were poisened, murdered etc. Litvichenko died 2006. He worked as former fsb. Go check his documentary
