The Sea Also Rises: Prepare for a Changing Shoreline | Eric Morris | TEDxCharleston

If you’re on the fence about whether or not the sea rising is real, you better find a taller fence, at least if you plan on watching Eric Morris’s absolutely riveting talk about sea level rise. (You’re going to need that fence’s elevation). Filled with convincing data and unique visualization techniques based on Morris’s work using lidar imagery, this talk is one you’ll want to share.
With a love for maps, Eric Morris is trained as a geoscientist who works as a Remote Sensing Specialist with NOAA's Office for Coastal Management (OCM), where he uses lidar and aerial imaging in developing geospatial and land cover products and managing NOAA’s Digital Coast outreach efforts.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    When I read this, I sat there thinking WTF, "Over the past 20 years, ocean basins have sunk an average of 0.004 inches per year. This means that the ocean is 0.08 inches deeper than it was two decades ago." The article went on to discuss why ocean levels did not rise.

    So if the SLR in Charleston is about 3mm per year, then that means we will have 90 years to adapt to a 1foot rise, then 180 years to adapt to a 2 foot rise, and 270 years to adapt to a 3 foot rise. No problem. The Dutch have done far more than that already.

    You make some assumptions that are not based on available data. The rate of sea level rise is changing as it is accelerating and not only that, the rate of acceleration is itself accelerating.

  • @Elite7555

    @Elite7555

    You assume linear growth, but as more and more land becomes ice free (and therefore absorbes sun light) and the CO2 level in the atmosphere rises, this growth accelerates. You know the story with the chess board and doubling rice corns on every field? That's how accelerated growth looks like.

  • @wannabetowasabe

    @wannabetowasabe

    Growth of anything is not a matter of simply adding a rate of increase to the same original amount year after year. To illustrate let's take a look at the growth of investments from the financial world. To calculate the doubling time of an investment the number 70 is divided by the annual percentage rate of earnings. Example, you have an account (principal) of $10,000 you invest where you earn 3.5%. 70/3.5 = 20. So in 20 years your principal grows to $20,000 at the somewhat small to moderate interest rate of 3.5%. Considering the rise in sea level in terms of percentage is pretty hard to conceive of, but the same principle of exponential growth still applies. In addition the 3mm per year in rise is increasing each year. So our example above is too simple, that 3.5% annual growth is changing each year so the rate of increase is not 3.5% the second year, it may be something like 3.509% the second year and 3.52% by the third year. By the fourth year the amount might be 3.536%. This by only raising the percentage by .009% to .016% each year. This is what I meant by not only is the sea rising the rate of increase is itself rising.

  • @wannabetowasabe

    @wannabetowasabe

    5 жыл бұрын

    The accelerating rate of increase is significantly affected by feedback just as Elite7555 mentioned. Feedback develops in places with a large quantity of ice on land, the two major locations being Greenland and the Antarctic. One example is that ice typically darkens as it melts, which increases the amount of energy being absorbed by glaciers, which in turn increases the rate of melt.

    city gov't will pay for a stratospheric shield (edit: the shield would be over the ice sheets) (or sahara sea). governments fear nothing more than losing their reason for existing. This idea would be funded by an ad hoc organization of governments threatened by sea level rise. No shortage of donors. It is nice to be smug. :-) All kidding aside, spread this word around as fast as you can. Maybe it will make it to the scientists.

    It’s funny that I can’t find Mr Englander’s scientific education background anywhere on the internet. All I find is that he’s a “sea level rise expert”. Doesn’t that bother anyone? It bothers me.

  • @fawnwoods51

    Mr. Englander is not speaking as a scientist, but as a person who experiences sea level rise near where he lives. He's like the many people who are losing their homes which are falling into the surrounding waters: for example, houses in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan are falling into Lake Michigan. The Lake is as high as it's ever been. They are speaking out like many others from Maryland, New York, New Jersey, California. And England and Canada. Just look on You Tube. The ocean in every part of the world is rising. And scientists talk about this in terms of melting glaciers and a warming ocean (warmer water takes up more space).

    Because of their maritime histories, The USA and Britain have a higher proportion of their infrastructure built close to the coast and therefore vulnerable to sea-level rise compared with terrestrially focus nations with such capitals as Paris, Berlin, Moscow and Beijing. Funny then that the nationalist policies prevalent in parts of the Anglosphere have contributed to denial of climate caused sea-level rise. Because the massive cost of adapting to this slow moving disaster will cripple these countries most and perhaps lead to the eclipse of America's global role. A far sighted nationalist in the USA should surely be promoting global adaptation to climate change as a way of minimising the costs to the country. To those who deny climate change, I would say, look at Indonesia, it is having to relocate it's coastal capital, Jakarta due to flooding. The flooding is partly due to subsidence, but also due to sea-level rise...
