The Scratched Universe | EP:06 PART 2 [SFM TF2 Series]

Фильм және анимация

Smoke & Mirrors, episode 6 of the SFM TF2 animation series - The Scratched Universe. This is Part 2 of the episode.
PATREON ► / blackimus

SIX months of development for this second part. This episode was really ambitious, difficult, tedious and rewarding to make. As always, I absolutely hated making the action scenes, so I hope you're happy with the result. Although this episode was an incredibly difficult step in the channel, I am extremely proud of the result! This will not bring a new norm for future episodes in terms of video length, I'm not doing that.
With 383GBs of HDD space and 270994 frames, this is the most ambitious and biggest episode I've ever written, and it'll probably stay like that for a long time. Though I am proud of the result, I do not want to do this all the time. It took 6 months to develop; the script was so big it made Word lag for a few seconds when saving; insane amounts of dialogue and voice acting. We finally reached the 1 hour long mark!

You have also earned one of the highest respect in the tf2 community. Along Winglet, Hoovytube and Fortress Films, you have created a series with a story, continuity and memorable characters. I find it cool you keep the vintage feeling of Tf2 while managing to juggle psychological horror and anime action very well.

15:54 The RED Soldier's voice in this scene was so good and it really fits a sort of distorted soldier and the line ''That... is what they all said.'' sent chills down my spine, really makes you think what a mature Soldier would be like and its pretty scary. (Kinda wish he survived or was a bit stronger based on how he was shown in the episode reveal.)

I wish that Captain Distorsed had survived or put up more of a fight. When I saw the reveal, the guy seemed very formidable, and it even looked like he was going to be a tough adversary. But no, he was easily defeated by Overpowered Heavy, to be honest, it was a bit disappointing.

Seeing how KAI reacted to his crew getting almost killed kinda reflected on his past, Heavy Guy the wholesome man and a badass character, and Smoke is an interesting person(not good at explaining). I'll never forgive myself for oversleeping and missing the premiere. This was a crazy episode, though. I notice that KIA seems to know a lot about the infection, as he's able to name almost all of the new creatures we meet in this episode and describe their function. However, we never see him actually interact with any of these new creatures until this episode. It got me thinking about the implied time skip between episode 1 where KIA is introduced and episode 4, where we finally see him again. We're never told exactly how long this time skip is, but my guess is multiple years, since KIA has a completely different outfit. I think it's possible that KIA has been on some adventures that we don't know about. Could this mean that we'll get a flashback sequence in the future episodes detailing how he discovered the new creatures and made his way into Heavy Guy's fragging match? (PS Blackimus if you're reading this, great job on the episode! The animation quality's getting better and the story is getting really interesting)

You, Crash Maul, and K.R., are my absolute favorites! Your storytelling alone, Black, has got so much heart that Yes, I actually cried at the part of KIA seeing his old scout comrade 🥲 you give these characters so much heart that I can’t even choose a favorite, you make us LOVE THEM ALL! Please, never give up on this series until it’s ready for a good farewell and we see your great work until the end! So, a fun little bit of background. I've been convincing a good friend of mine to watch episodes of TSU for a while now, and I was saving my first watch so we could finish all the current releases together. This one took a while for us to find the time for, but today we sat on the couch and treated it as a movie, snacks and all! This is a feature length presentation, so it needs the proper setting! I think this may be the second longest TF2 related media I've ever seen, second only to emesis blue. That video has multiple millions of views and several articles about it though, so I think it's only right this one has some views and some commentary to its name. And speaking of, boy is there a lot to say. There's so much content I'm not even sure where to start, so I'll back up and once again reaffirm I'm (as always) thoroughly impressed with your script writing, your characters, your plot, your pacing, and now even your voice acting. It was a little odd to see the character's voices change midway through the video, but at this point we're no strangers to minor shifts, and given how long this took I can easily assume you found talent along the way and decided to incorporate it as you worked. In a way, it was kind of uplifting. It felt like I was watching the series bulk itself up in not just its narrative, but its foundational components. We've come so far since episode 1, and though I wouldn't personally change the first episode one bit, I have to admit every single aspect of the story's presentation has been improved on. Maybe it's presumptuous of me to say, but I almost feel like you and I have been on a journey for years now. I've been steadily watching you hone the craft, waiting on each episode patiently but excitedly. I knew this series had potential, and I'm so pleased to see it blossom into what - on some level - I already understood it was capable of. So lets start with the human characters. Fixer and Jumpsuit have always had a good dynamic, and I'm glad to see them joined by equally interesting co-workers. The demo and sniper grew on me quickly, and everyone from that scene just felt so real. If you removed all the cinematic camera angles and music swells and just had them talk, it would feel like a natural conversation among friends who were getting to know eachother's personal histories. I seriously can't get enough of your dialogue, even when it's slice of life. Everyone is just too vibrantly human to seem like they're reciting lines or simply filling out time. There is literally no character in this series I even mildly disliked. Sure I rooted against P Rick, but I didn't hate him as an asset to the story, I just knew he was a jackoff lmao. Poor fixer though. Once again we see how much of a softie he is and how much he blames himself for the cataclysm at railway united. I felt bad seeing him torture himself during the lunch break, but it brought a smile to my face to see the others being so supportive to him. Maybe it's not intentional, but I feel like there's a major theme of "family" in this series: what defines it, who yours is, and where you ultimately belong. Sometimes, our family is something we lose. Other times, it's something we find. And still other times, it finds US. Even the Distorted uphold the theme in a twisted way. They are sapient creatures that work together, build off eachother, and even talk or laugh amongst themselves. Everyone has a family, or at least a community, it's just that those things are inherently neutral concepts that can be good, evil, or just there. Our powerhouse team has added another to its ranks, and in just two (admittedly long) episodes, Smoke already feels like they were a part of the gang from the very beginning. I may have said this before as a minor point and I mean no offense, but I actually thought smoke was a bit more interesting before we knew they had a stand. The idea of a class wanting to be another class and having a playstyle that favors certain unexpected behaviors is nifty in and of itself. In a way, this is a compliment: Smoke was already interesting enough not to even need a stand to be a unique character in the world. That being said, I don't have any issue with the fact that they use stands, it just seemed like extra sprinkles on what was already a good sundae. Either way, it's clear they're a very fast thinker and can handle themselves on their own, which makes them a perfect fit for this elite team of freelancers. I do wonder where the angle with heavy guy's power is going. It seems like when they overcome a major challenge, he is the only one who visibly gains and strengthens from the aftermath. Will he eventually dwarf the others in combat, or will they find their own ways to catch up? Now you knew this was coming, but moving onto the distorted themselves! Very pleased to see distorted in the later stages, and the battles with them were much more seamless than earlier episodes. The idea of the distorted being intelligent was lampshaded earlier, but now it's on full display. I paid attention to how the former VAC(?) members flanked, took cover, used their regeneration to their advantage. Later they even predicted their foes moments and used it against them. All of this gave them advantage against an enemy that technically outnumbered them, and whereas before I believed our stand users were basically overleveled for this incursion, I now see it goes much deeper, and we're only scratching the surface of things to come, pardon the pun. The red VAC soldier's whole dialogue and presentation were amazing, by the way. He was very sinister, but also held himself in a way that made it clear he was the big kahuna around those parts. I loved the part when he caught Smoke's arrow and his expression didn't even change. It was the exact moment I knew even the regular distorted could have tricks up their sleeves. I know he's an antagonist, but he was also an outright badass. Also, I don't know if this was intentional, but in some of the later points of his dialogue (especially when he grabs the arrow) the angle of his helmet makes the top of his eyes appear to slant upwards towards the center, giving him a slightly tired/fearful gaze that isn't really either of those things. It's exactly like how a lot of evil ghoulish forces tend to look in anime, as if they almost pity their opponent for being so weak. Souichi from Junji Ito is an extreme version of what I'm talking about, but there are other more subtle cases. Whether deliberate or not, I internalized it as a nod to those anime tropes, and I thought it was done very well. It also looks like the distorted variants can get quite a lot more gnarly than I originally thought when I made my old variant fanart. Those typically involved classic mercs with relatively subtle deformations and powers that put them above the others. I'm very eager to see where things go from here, but I might have to update my way of thinking if I ever make more fanart. Speaking of, I'm still excited for the next Q&A fanart showcase, but it goes without saying that you should take your time :) That's all for this episode. Thanks Blackimus!

Hey man, I've been waiting for ya. I always enjoy your comments so lets get to it. Before I say anything, there are other fellow animations that can be considered as "feature length", although that term to me is very...debatable. In case you wanted to know, there are more videos with similarities to TSU apart from the obvious one that everyone and their grandmother knows about. In case you want recommendations of similar channels like mine in terms of having a series, you have HoovyTube (Magnificent Nine), MrFaiz995 (has a series, doesn't have a name as far as I know), K.R (Ghosts of the Past). These are the people I remember right now, I'm probably missing someone, but yeah. I cannot relate nor compare my work with Emesis Blue, no matter how many people keep doing that for me, either in terms of video length, or in terms of its horror themes. I don't like it because this is basically a curse now that I'll have to tolerate until my last days in this platform. It's not fair for any of us who are trying to make something for ourselves here - something that is hopefully original, without being compared to popular animation/popular channel, it doesn't make sense to me and to be frank...it's pretty demoralizing for anyone who's in a situation like mine. But I digress, don't take what I said in the wrong way, I'm just chatting casually. Anyway, I'm very happy you're spreading the madness of TSU into innocent peoples' minds, the Aliens appreciate you! Thank you. Seriously. Thank you for having common sense as to why the voices changed through out the video in the context of SIX MONTHS of development. It's absolutely insane how it's been 3 years already since EP1. I'm proud of every video I've done for both my series, but I feel like I could've done more - but not in a handicap or harmful way towards my production quality. I'm just talking normally here, nothing related to critiques. I love making casual interactions between characters, hence one of the main reasons why I made Slice of Life. That's one of the series' biggest spotlights, character interaction. Obviously some of it has rubbed on TSU and I'm all here for it, it just improves all characters. The whole "family" theme is completely unintentional, unless I'm unconsciously doing it somehow. I just like characters in my things being nice people, instead of being complete assholes. Even my villains are people that you can probably relate to, hopefully. I don't take offense to what you think/thought of Smoke because you are actually civilized and respectful in your critiques. KIA and Smoke are improving themselves along the battles too, but it is very subtle. Everyone is improving, but HG is just a lot more obvious and "in your face". I'm REALLY happy that people love the RED V.A.C Soldier (Show Stealer as I called him during development). That bastard stole the show for me when I was animating because he was just that good for me. I'm glad people have enjoyed the justice, respect and fear I've given to stage one Distorted. It was quite hard to pull off properly. The anime trope was a complete coincidence, I barely watch animes at all, contrary to popular belief. I'm extremely specific and picky with them. The Variants are a guilty pleasure of mine. Thanks to the Distortion virus' lore, I can go a bit horror game fanboy crazy here with their designs! Obviously, not all Variants will be grotesque and deformed. Some are, some aren't. Btw, I do plan on using some of your designs with some changes, the confirmed one so far being Perforate. Hey man, if you wanna go nuts with your design fanarts, go for it. Just remember I can't model anything and don't know people who can, so if you plan on drawing designs that you want to incorporate in SFM, they have to be possible to exist! I can't wait for the next Q&A either, there's a LOT of fanart to show and I'm gonna get a little "crazy" with the video itself. Thanks again for your comment, man. Take care!

@@Blackimus I hadn't considered how many other times people might have compared this to EB or how demoralizing it might've seemed to say. I know you didn't mean your response to be backlash against what I said specifically, but rest assured I meant it as a compliment! There are certainly other youtubers with some amazing TF2 series (I haven't heard of the ones you're talking about, but I know StBlackSt, Aboabdulable, Crash Maul, Winglet and all the collective gmod ARG ones) but this was physically, to me, the 2nd longest TF2 animation I've ever seen that wasn't some shitpost and had a LOT of meat on it. It just blew me away in the same way first seeing EB did; It gave me the same sense of "Wow, this is a PIECE." So in the end you're right: I'm not really comparing the TSU to EB itself. I'm comparing how it made me feel vs how the other work of art did, and the answer was "very similar levels of excitement." Hopefully that clears things up! I believe that the family themes could easily be a byproduct of how you write characters. They don't feel forced or in-my-face. I kinda ended up constructing them myself after looking at how the various character narratives went. Heavy Guy and KIA lost old "family" and made a new ones through unlikely circumstances; it's shown they care tremendously about their new allies. Fixer and Jumpsuit losing old co-workers who were like family to Fixer, and later find themselves living together and finding new co-workers to break bread with. Even the Distorted are allies to eachother and believe they are fighting for the right cause. They certainly appear villainous, but I can honestly root for both sides of the conflict because they're each intelligent, likeable forces using the resources they have to further the goals they fight for. Truth be told, I admired the infected VAC team for surviving so long despite being outnumbered. In a weird way, they were sort of the underdogs in that encounter - using their alien strength and wits to deal with superior supernaturally-empowered opponents. I will continue to do the aliens proud. For the corrupting color! For the tarnishing truth! For show stealer! >:) I'm glad you brought the modeling up as well. Was the Bulwark a modeling job or was it simply taking a necromorph base, changing the color a bit, and adding some merc bodies to it? If I know, that'll help inform my work and realize what's actually possible for both of us to make. Anyway very cool to see Perforate could make an appearance, and I'm super glad to hear there's more fanart flowing in!

There's more to being a pyro than just running around with a blowtorch, a few things pyro does well is reflecting shots from soldiers and demomen, protecting engineer's sentries and dispensers, and spy checking, since there's no friendly fire in most matches so pyro snuffs out a spy like a fly on a wall

im so glad this got to cook as long as it did, 1000000% worth the wait! im LOVING watching these characters grow and become more fleshed out and three dimensional. from all the way back in the first episode to now, the growth in animation and character writing work is absolutely INSANE. im being heavily reminded of the earlier seasons of red vs blue, not necessarily in terms of story and themes, but the spirit and creativity behind it. theres something really unironically artistic and beautiful about using such an unforgiving and strange medium- such as machinima or SFM- that was created as a tool w a specific purpose in mind and then using it for something TOTALLY different and pushing your tools to their limits and getting creative with the narrative and imagery/visuals to adapt to the limitations and work WITH them. its hopelessly endearing and satisfying to watch the creator of something weird and cool and different find their footing and start to master their craft. your hard work is paying off, the quality increase between each episode is SIGNIFICANT and im excited to see what else will come, especially as you gain access to more funding and resources with more exposure! your passion and care for this project shows through so clearly, i hope to see the full story realized exactly how you wanted one day :D

I have so much to say about this episode. Apologies in advance. First off, the general stuff. My guy… over an hour long??!! The dedication. The drive. The SFM spaghetti. My lord it must have been equally rewarding as it was a pain to complete this in this quality. There’s subtle grain and noise in the backbone, as well as a slight reverb with the voices that hammers home how desolate it is. The subtitles glitch and shift rather than fade in when the more powerful Distorted shed their disguises. Micro-expressions in facial animations. MORE VOICE ACTORS!!!! Hearing Turge’s voice, then Cinder, and then Heavy Guy’s end of episode internal monologue! I expected VAs in your Slice Of Life series, so I short-circuited when they started talking in TSU. Your script and dialogue is stellar already, but the VAs did a fantastic job adding subtle tension, joy, and in Cinder’s case, fondness, to their voices. And let’s not forget the fight scenes. This entire episode was action on action with a sprinkling of humor and reprieve, so your choreography really took center stage. Each episode it just continues to improve, both with physical head-on action and the stands. This episode opened up stands’ potential and abilities, and in Heavy Guys’ case… I’ll get back to that in a moment. Next up, the title. Smoke and Mirrors, by definition, means when something is intended to make you believe that something is being done or is true, when it is not. In Part One that meaning was pretty self explanatory. It’s an introduction to a character literally named Smoke who doesn’t look the norm and story beats such as power malfunction when in reality it’s an ambush, and we’re ‘V.A.C’ when in reality we all have stands. But in Part Two it goes absolutely wild. Intentional or not, there’s some internal smoke and mirrors happening. Fixer, who, when talking about Railway United, lies about his own situation, because of survivors guilt, I bet, but clouding the truth to himself and others nonetheless. Smoke, lying to Cinder about their current situation, for her good, but still a lie. K.I.A seeing the death of his VAC allies in the shape of this new team he has become a part of, only finally removing that clouded vision (literally seeing his eyes not obscured by the hat) once Smoke is finally a part of the team, and saying goodbye to Ace. Alright, if I don’t stop talking about this it’s going to be multiple paragraphs of allegory. Moving on to the specific characters. Heavy Guy is getting some pretty stellar advice and a power boost from a downright nasty looking Oni. I sure hope this doesn’t come back to bite him in the future. And the absorbing of the souls of other defeated Distorted, while pretty cool, is also somewhat ominous. Very glad to get his backstory that he’s always had his stand, which makes this whole ancestry/bloodline thing fascinating, but I also worry about the future implications with his apparent immunity to the flash. I theorize that he wasn’t immune, but we’ll see. For KIA, saying ‘going through some stuff this episode’ is an understatement. In the beginning, with the camera stare down, I was wondering why he reacted the way he did. Then I realized that the soldier is wearing the same helmet as the VAC Heavy in Episode One, and also holding a mini-gun. That’s not a coincidence, that’s full on psychological warfare, and I think the Distorted know that. Honestly, this entire two parter has really fleshed out this dynamic between the Distorted and KIA. They more than recognize KIA, they’re profiling him. Really makes me think of how long he was fighting Distorted solo until now. The team is helping him move on, which is great, I just hope it doesn’t turn into a full blown self-sacrificial streak. The whole “See you soon, Ace” and him pushing himself so far that his healing factor doesn’t stop the effects, purple-eyed, moments are really beginning to sound some alarms in my head. Smoke. You really didn’t HAVE to do the character death set up. You didn’t HAVE to make me really care about them and their relationship with Cinder, delve deeply into their background, and all the little troupes that scream from anyone versed in watching anime “WE’RE GOING TO KILL OFF THIS CHARACTER SOON.” And then you drove an arrow through Smoke’s head. I screamed in real life. You made me scream, and then laugh when I realized Smoke had switched the damage of the arrow with a health pack, like you showed with the mini-gun earlier. You mad lad. Fixer, as stated above, is going through some very self-deprecating thoughts as well as survivors' guilt. He’s trying to swap around what actually happened, to others and in his own head, to try and relieve himself of his guilt, when in reality falling asleep might have saved his life. There was nothing he could have done in that situation without losing his own life, and he is really having a hard time coming to terms with that. It’s going to break him down if he doesn’t address the feelings head on. Which, for a guy like Fixer, is a bit ironic. The Special VACs. Hoo boy. Their abilities are INTERESTING. I don’t have much more to say, yet. Have to see them in action a bit more before I can rule out if it’s assisted by technology, innate abilities, or a mix of the two. Finally, some extra things I noticed. Very nice to see some characters who already became Distorted appear in Smoke’s flashbacks. Veerus makes their reappearance, as well as a few other big bads, including the top of this Distorted hierarchy, we’ll get more info on all of them later I assume. Also the fact that THEY’RE IN ACTUAL SPACE. And creating some of those Distorted artificially. The drop pods make much more sense now. You’re feeding us the breadcrumbs. Excited for it to all come together, eventually. This episode deserves you the highest praise and a well-deserved break. That’s it for my rambling. Hope this makes any sense at all. I’m going to grab a drink and watch the entire series again just to see what other pieces I can put together from this.

Also. Yes! I see all the Stand lore you dropped. I’m going to stew on that for a bit. :P Edit: For Heavy Guy I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THE STONE FROM EPISODE 2!! Same color as the eyes and the particles. Interesting!

This episode was amazing and I can see the improvement in animation and storywriting. Also open up someday KIA D: KIA = Killed In Action Man I thought I would like Smoke tho but ngl, I don’t think their character is my cup of tea? Tried to enjoy them but just not rly a character I like personally. I can’t wait to see more of Fixer in the future and yooooo we finally got to see Heavy’s hidden power in action. It looks extremely OP so good thing Heavy was the one to have it. Amazing episode, you didn’t have to treat us with an hour long movie but you did!!! Make sure to take a break and relax, will be rewatching!

For those who want to know which song is used for these moments of badassery of Heavy Guy at 22:15 & 44:20, it's called JOJO's Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind OST - Coercion.
