Scientific Method - 1. Theory 2. Prediction 3. Testing 4. Observation 5. Evaluation - Question --- Why have we had no new natural laws discovered in the past 100+ years?
Happy to see mention of the MythBusters. Their experiments are done more for entertainment than for experimental validity, but that isn't really important. For myself and probably a lot of other people here, they were the people that introduced us to science and taught us that it was interesting.
Mr. Anderson, I admire you! I have learned so much from your videos!! Thank you for sharing so much of the knowledge you have. You are amazing!! May you live a long, prosperous life! Thanks!!

Great video, thanks for taking the time to explain this topic.
Experimentation is only a step of the scientific process but it is a very important because it always a) Given the biologists a correct result b) Allow rejection of some alternative hypothesis c) Ensure that hypothesis can be confirmed with certainty d) Gives scientists a chance to work in the laboratory

A pretty helpful video and a little Scientific history.
I was just explaining this to a 4th grader in my after school program and her study sheet did not make it easy to understand the differences and importance of independent and dependent variables. I showed her using the classic balls of different sizes and hitting a ball with a foam hockey stick and a plastic bat...I hope I made it easier and didn't confuse her. I wasn't thinking how the hypothesis itself reveals your variables so it seems I neglected the easiest explanation, thanks for that.
This was very easy to listen to and learn from. Thank you! :-)

Another brilliant sharing. Thank you
Great, great, great video, thanks a lot for making this video!
I think it's important to say, that the "truth" is something very dynamic. Even if we think we know how something is working (proven with experiments), we can always be proven wrong (keep in mind that our truth has often a p value of 0.05-0.01 and technology improves constantly to discover new thing). Our knowledge of science is just a snapshot, and it will advance in the future. I think it's very importent to think critically and also keep questioning the "thinks we know".
Thank you for this video. I had been reading lots of books and listening to podcasts in which the scientific method was mentioned but had no idea what it entailed. Thanks for clearing it up. Very informative video :)

Summary • The scientific method consists of making observations, formulating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis with new observations, making a new hypothesis if the new observations contradict the old hypothesis, or continuing to test the hypothesis if the observations agree. • A hypothesis is a tentative explanation that can be tested by further observation. • A theory is a hypothesis that has been supported with repeated testing. • A scientific law is a statement that summarizes the results of many observations. • Experimental data must be verified by reproduction from other scientists. • Theories must agree with all observations made on the phenomenon under study. • Theories are continually tested, forever. Abu 'Ali al-Hasa I am sure it won't help u now but still...
This is great, thanks!
Outstanding.
Very helpful thank you!
Excellent Video, I´ll use for my students to understand how the scientific method came about and how it works to develop theories and find out the truth.
helped a ton! thanks!!
What you said about Galilio is half right and half wrong... Somethings don't always fall at the same rate. An example is when you drop a piece of paper and a 3 pound weight, the weight would drop first because of air resistance. So, somethings don't fall at the same rate.
"the myth-busters are not scientists"? If they use the Scientific Method then they are scientists
great video!
What is the difference between a hypothesis and a prediction? How are they used in the sm?

Ok, I know this video was made forever ago, but I got confused about something. When you/he was talking about graphing the independent and dependent variables as a bar graph, how would that work? It doesn't make sense to me.

Good one friend!
The only reason country music would help grow the plant is because the plant would run out of its soil to kill itself.
Strictly speaking, Bacon didn't invent the Scientific Method, though he did the lion's share of the work to popularize it. According to his account in one of his legendary essays, he simply found and lifted the scientific method from how certain information in scripture was presented with built-in veracity (as well as how scripture was interpreted at the time in Reformation writings). If this worked for the Bible, he figured, then it would work for science as well.

Can the scientific method verify itself? Just curious.
@shadowstrike5299

The scientific method is just a logical tool. Since its more mental than anything else it can’t been “verified” yet it still works.
@feynstein1004
6 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you argue that because it works, that's kind of a verification?
@BrianTarr
6 жыл бұрын
sure, it works by inductive reasoning. you drop an apple 999 times, you can reason that it will drop again the next time you let it go. by the same token, the scientific method creates predictive models which can be verified or falsified by further experiments. the more a model is verified, the more confident you can be in it, and the more successful the models are, the more confident you can be in the "model-making process" (i.e., the scientific method). this doesn't provide a priori justification, and thus requires trial and error, but the device you're using to read this comment is just one piece of the tons of evidence that science works!

kind of in itself absolves verification

The term scientific method is superfluous because any correct method of thinking is scientific and any wrong method of thinking is unscientific. Hypotheses are just a convenience but not essential. The need for experimentation follows from the need for correctness.
