As described in the book,
Into the Fray: How NBC's Washington Documentary Unit Reinvented the News By Tom Mascaro
www.amazon.com/Into-Fray-Wash...
The Science of Spying, marked the arrival of Bob Rogers as a field reporter-producer. The program aired May 4, 1965, and tracked the roots of U.S. covert operations back to the 1950s, providing a stark account of clandestine initiatives in a time before public disclosures, congressional investigations, and Hollywood movies made the 1970s a difficult time to be an American spy. The "Pentagon Papers," the Pike and Church Committees, and thrillers such as Three Days of the Condor eventually revealed the CIA's complicity in assassination plots and interna-tional meddling, which Yates and Rogers had already seen up close. NBC management stood firm when The Science of Spying attracted criti-cism. Ad reps from Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn (BBD&O) screened it and advised their client B. F. Goodrich Company to withdraw.31 BBD&O issued a statement saying the program violated the Goodrich advertising policy "in that it treats a controversial public issue in a way which may do harm to the government of the United States?" NBC countered that the documentary "fell within the broad outlines of the program policy origi-nally submitted to and accepted by the B. F. Goodrich agency, BBD&O."33 The CIA watched the program and tracked subsequent reactions in the national press. Viewers wrote to President Johnson complaining NBC News had given America's enemies negative propaganda.34 Yates may have antici-pated some adverse reactions to the program, but he never expected to be frightened by what he discovered. This production was mislabeled IMHO. The content really isn't about the individual practice of spying, or even about the training and mechanics of how a unit goes about spying. This thing is about how the government views spying in term of meeting certain goal needs and how the various branches view spying as it pertains to that department or specific branches goal needs; political, military, etc.. As such, there was a big disconnect for me.

They simply hire lots of surrogates who share their views and allow them to make the illicit decisions. Then it becomes nearly impossible to investigate, much like a mob of people beating someone to death with sticks versus a single hitman pulling a trigger. Meanwhile someone like Dulles can sleep soundly and rattle on about the wonderfulness of his organization.

Arguments regarding ideology, even "morality", inevitably end in stalemate (and therefore becomes an exercise in futility); The hard realities of starvation, terror and oppressions is far less subtle. The only nations/territories that the United states ever openly, overtly and blatantly "occupied" was West Germany, West Berlin Japan... possibly even South Korea. One should compare the sad litany of outcomes of those occupied by Communist and fascist regimes... and draw their own conclusions. The fact that the CIA was obviously well established in Afghanistan (i.e. supporting Taliban purge of the Soviets), subsequent to 9/11, the CIA should have been allowed to finish their job. Iraq is a classic example of what Eisenhower was referring to (i.e. "military-Industrial Complex") G.W. Bush, et al should have been impeached... if not tried for crimes against humanity. Reagan Iran-Contra was but an hors d'oeuvre.

The greatest cause of misery in the world. From the Crusades, to Hitler's genocide, to Stalin's Ukraine purges, to Mao's Cultural Revolution, to our Native-American slaughter, to our slavery and brutalization of the Black man, it has always been the same. One operative in the former Soviet Union spoke of what it meant to have believed in the workers' revolution; to have killed and ruined lives for it, and then when the empire fell, to see that his life had all been a means, but the ends had disappeared from under him--a life utterly without moral justification.

This is sort of like watching a Disney “Family Friendly “ movie 🍿 On rationalization - even has standard disclaimers like “We” don’t kidnap or kill to fulfill our goals here at the CIA - ✨😳✨ aaaahh 🙄 🤔Oooo K - 😎 oh And we don’t lie, cheat, or - well - Yea we do steal from time to time 😜 (😅🤣😂) . If any agent has “Moral” issues in the performance of their duty we don’t force them to concur with our goals 😐. This is starting to make me giggle as I see this as ones love ❤️ of country (old yeller)- and the end result of this family protector we call the cia - when they go off the charts and say - well if our enemies are rabid - why should we be any less 🤡☠️❓(essentially) I’m easily able to see why we can’t possibly limit (old yeller) our protector because it would be game over. This is basically “ King of the hill” by any means 👻 👀‼️ Gotta get back to the movie - Can’t way’t to get my mind twisted into a knot 🙄 of understanding. Anyway - I’m gonna buckle up cause it’s definitely not a Disney movie & this is an old old movie & old yeller has let the dogs out on it’s own people through AI 😎 - 🙏👋

This mockumentary is chock full of lies. Interesting to actually see evil characters like Alan Dulles, but even John Chancellor got in on the act, claiming Arbends was a communist. He was a reformer. He was suspicious of the Soviets. When they took United Fruit land they compensated, and only took uncultivated acres. Also, the fact the U.S. corporations owned much of the land was NEVER mentioned. The CIA under Dulles protected Wall Street. Eisenhower is also guilty here. The “success” of Guatemala? 200,000+ dead since the coup. 😢😢
