The Science Behind My Favourite Skincare Acids | Lab Muffin Beauty Science
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
There are a ton of ingredients in skincare, and a whole bunch of awesome ones are acids. Inconveniently, they all do different things, so it can get a bit confusing!
In this video I talk about my favourite acids in skincare, the science behind what they do, and how to use them in your routine. There are hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHA), vitamins, and a couple of less familiar acids too!
This video is for if you have an established skincare routine, and you’re looking to add more actives. If you’re just starting out, I recommend checking out my free exfoliation guide first: labmuffin.com/exfol
CORRECTION: P50 actually contains lactic, not glycolic!
Thanks for watching :)

Exfoliating with acids is so underrated when it comes to common skin care knowledge. I didn’t know about it since last year and its really benefited me.

this is such a good video and I feel like not enough people who are interested in skincare have access to this detailed, science-based info. so awesome!
I have just found your channel and love what you create. I study a bachelor of medical science and was specifically looking for a skincare channel that explains the chemistry behind the product. Your videos are 10/10!

I bought Paula's choice bha 2% exfoliate. I used it just once & it broke me out badly🤢. I have mild acne & my skin is dry combination & sensetive. But it claimed that it will help with acne. What should I do with it ? Should I throw it or give it a try....But too afraid to try it again. Help me pls... is that ok to use it on your nose and mouth area or it can cause irritation.??

Hehe skincare nerd!! Ditto LOVE this, will share with all of my friends who get scared by the word acid 🤓 I have a PhD in molecular biology but I'm thinking I should have paid more attention to my chemistry classes!! So happy I found your channel as I'm sure you're equally annoyed with some of the BS in skincare/makeup I'm pretty sure I'm the only person that asks to view the ingredients list!! 😜🤣

One of your best vids!!
Love your channel and your insta!! I love having access to well researched and well documented explanations. I especially love that you are so easy to follow! And as someone who uses pubmed like Google I love that you treat skincare as science. I hope you're willing reconsider the use of "ethnic skin" as a description for essentially different shades of brown. I'm brown skinned and I live in Scandinavia. I don't know how often I have used similar euphemisms... But then I've been learning a lot over the past few years, and it has a lot to do with white skin as the norm. Ethnic skin, deeper skin tones etc. Ethnic doesn't really make sense as a signifier except in the context of historical colonialis and deeper than what? Deeper than white. I have changed my vocabulary to simply describing the colours. I'm brown, browner than you, but not as dark brown as my black friend. I'm not saying I know what's right, but it feels better and more correct. And maybe there's some word that does the same for you? Either way, respect your hard work and the in-depth analysis.

Love!! Thank you for another incredible educational video. I'd be curious to learn your thoughts on PHA, or if there's any research beyond what little I've found scouring the web, regarding its efficacy!
@LabMuffinBeautyScience

The research on PHAs is very scarce and biased, so it's hard to say for sure how well they work! But they do seem to work very similarly to AHAs but with less irritation...
I have been following you on Instagram. I didn't know you were on KZread as well. Glad to find you here. More PhDs on KZread please :) Keep the science alive!

Love your channel!! Did you say you’re making a DIY vit C serum? 😍 Please do a tutorial! Xx
Great video!
Hi, Loved the video, it was super informative. Question, where does adapalene fall into the scale of acids?
Recently discovered your channel and really love your clear and helpful content. Thank you! I was curious why you chose to classify all the ingredients of this video together as "acids," as I had not previously seen linoleic, ascorbic, and AHAs BHAs discussed in tandem (even though they are all acids). The reason I'm asking is because I'm considering putting together a lightweight skincare guide for some interested friends, and I'm wondering if you think this approach of talking about all acid ingredients together might be more intuitive than the typical classification by function? I'm so deep in skincare land it's hard to figure out what makes the most sense to a complete beginner. Thank you!
@LabMuffinBeautyScience
6 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a great classification IMO - I prefer by function as well, but a lot of beginners think that all acids are one big group and just want to know which acids to use ;)
you have got to make a video about DIY VC serum, I have been looking for a VC serum BOTH EFFECTIVE AND AFFORDABLE since forever. LOVE YOU !!!! very video is very useful info and you are so lovely

Thank you very much for your videos, I have discovered you about a week ago and since then I have seen almost all your videos. I love the simplicity and clarity of your videos content. I would like to ask you, what about the wash of products with AHA acids? I have a wash of 15 minutes mask with lactic acid as a second ingridient, right after water. Can it be effective? Thank you for your answer. Stay save and keep doing videos. Greetings from the Czech Republic, Klára.

Michelle, can you please address Alpha Lipoic Acid? What are its properties and effectiveness compared to the other acids you metnioned in the video? I like to mix The Ordinary ALA with extra-virgin olive oil - seems like the two give eachother a boost in that my skin is extra-bright the next morning when I use both compared to when I use them individually or mixed with other serums! Ciao, L
I saw that either you or Stephen mentioned the thing about Linoleic acids vs free fatty acids last night on IG. It got me thinking about some of my recent oil purchases and whether they're really doing what I bought them for! Oh well, my vitamin C derivs and Glycolic acids are doing well for my PIH. Might try some of that Azelaic Acid my next Deciem order, though!

Great video as usual! One question about your DIY Vitamin C serum - I've read through your post and I couldn't find how I might be able to add Ferulic acid to your recipe without Vitamin E. Do I need to make any changes to pH or still need to use an emulsifier if I omit the Vitamin E?

Love your videos, MIchelle! ;D I was wondering if you could tell us more about the vit A derivative hydroxypinacolone retinoate. I know it's in Mad Hippie vit A serum and have read online that it's as effective (or almost) as tretinoin but without the irritation. I'm curious to learn more about this form of vit A/if there are any studies done on it/it's effectiveness. :)
Alternating glycolic with trentinoin and putting sunscreen rain or shine has turned me from a witch into a fairy 🎉
Have been watching your videos since yesterday... Thnx for sharing your knowledge ☺️... Wt is the best time of the day to apply aha (10%) cream n also vitamin c
Do you have any recommendations and tips for acids that are safe for people with high intensity sun exposure? I know that retinols & most acids require sunscreen because of increased sensitivity, but my issue is that I live in the tropics & I surf ... so YES I wear A LOT of sunscreen, but also I'm looking to prevent AND reduce hyperpigmentation & sun damage without adding any sun sensitizing ingredients into my routine ... I have oily-combo sensitive skin :) thank you in advance & GREAT CONTENT!!!
This channel is AMAZING!!! :) Question please: when using Retin A, can one use AHAs beforehand without cancelling the effect of the Retin A itself? I am aware it could be irritating to use them together; but it seems to work on me and i do not know if it is just because by applying the AHAs before the Tretinoid, i simply cancel or reduce its effect. Thank you so much.

I literally just mix a tiny bit of L-Ascorbic acid powder in the palm of my hand with a pump or two of hyaluronic acid serum and apply. It tingles slightly for a moment but it’s not unpleasant. Might not work well for those with sensitive skin.
What do you think about kojic acid soap on the face??
Did we skip citric acid? It works so well on me!
Help! I am Asian and love the outdoor. Which type of acid I should use to lighten up my age spots and melisma ? Thanks!
Great video as always! I use an AHA+BHA peel and rosehip oil, I liked what lactic acid did for my skin, but I'm taking a short break before considering squeezing it in my routine again. One question: since waxing and using Retin A and similar products isn't the best of combinations, do you think other hair removal techniques might also be problematic, such as using an epilator or tweezing?
@LabMuffinBeautyScience

Thank you! I think those would be less harmful since they pull the hair only, rather than skin + hair. But it's still worth proceeding with caution!

Thank you for the imformative video, where can we read more biochemistry related topics on AHA's, what research platform would you recoomend?
This will sound crazy. But Yknow the effervescent vitamins ? Could You use one a splash of a vitamin C one like a toner if it doesn’t cause irritation or would this be ridiculous? Lol, You are very chemistry savvy. And I love the channel !
Hi, so you're saying that if we use azelaic acid and retinoid treatment together, it works better. So do I layer the treatments together?? I'm using a 20% Azelaic Acid and 0,025% Triretinon Treatments for my PIH by the way! Thankyou! I love your contents
Im pretty much an acid hore so i use many different kinds every night. It seems to be working fine but my face can feel a little dry or tight when i wake up. So i step away from adding different acids on top of each other or just make sure i use both a moisturizer and oil after the acids? BTW i love your videos ans how you explain everything from a scientistic viewpoint

Can I ask you, what is a good Vitamin C product? Have used Skinceuticals, Obaji etc. Tried The Ordinary (hated it.) You mentioned making your own. I want to buy one. Heard most oxidize. And one last question, what if any face oil brands do you like? You mentioned liking light ones. Same for me. Current La Mer is so fragranced...think it makes my skin itchy.
