The most ironic part, for me, and there are many ironies with this situation, is how many on the opposite aisle of Jerry (politically) wouldn’t give a rat’s ass if they were polyamorous. It just stings to know how many people his hateful ideals have hurt, how many had to hide their identity during the formative years of their lives. discouraged from experimenting and having fun. All while their leader got to do all the above. Rules for thee, not for me. The very people Jerry demonizes are the ones that would be accepting to him having an “unconventional” relationship. So sad when people stomp on the very thing they would benefit from opening up to. Edit: a word

As someone who is polyamorous and grew up in a Christian background you completely nailed it. It isn't the fact that they were/are poly (even if people in the christian faith are against it) it is the hatefulness they spewed while doing that exact same thing. It hurts and it makes people feel unsafe. Ngl, I always feel kinda good when these stories break since I know how damaging the teaches are/can be.

I was raised Christian (now deconstructing), and the things I disliked about the Falwells and similar personalities was not their relationship or whatever they were doing in their bedroom, it was the blatant hypocrisy and the desire to shove that bigoted viewpoint (that we later learned they weren't even living up to themselves!) onto everyone else, whether they are Christian or not!

My mom used to go to church every Sunday throughout my childhood until her death when I was 22. She would work during every service to do the accounting. When I turned 13, she took me out of Sunday school to have me work w/her in the basement to help count money & document everything. My mom loved music & I observed the only breaks she took was when the choir would sing old gospel hymns. I thought it so strange that she didn't participate in the actual service, unless it was someone's confirmation. At home, she made it fairly clear she didn't enjoy listening to sermons. One Sunday morning while counting change, I gathered the courage to confront her odd relationship with church. I asked her 'Why do you go every single Sunday only to be stuck in the basement counting money, balancing the books and only popping up so you can sing How Great Thou Art.' I questioned her sincerity. She answered 'I do this in order to keep them honest.' She educated me on what it was like growing up in the early 40's, poor, in a rural area and when the strange tent revival grifters came to preach. She used to play the piano and was told they'd reimburse her or donate a food basket for the family. Everytime, my mom would play & Everytime she walked home empty handed. She continued to play b/c it was sometimes, the only access she had to a piano & she enjoyed seeing her friends. However, she learned to never trust a minister or pastor who insisted on keeping any money or bookkeeping private and locked away from the congregation's eyes. She didn't mind if people prayed but for her, sincerity within a person's heart and their genuine actions were more valuable than any easily faked words especially when money's involved. When she passed, unbeknownst to me, my mom had informed the minister of her illness and that she had little time left. We didn't discover these conversations until I received a message from the minister explaining how all service arrangements are taken care of and they donated a burial plot for all her years of faithful service. Amusingly, after the service, my uncle praised how well done the service was & how the minister really did a great job selling the information I gave him when they eulogized her. It took a few people to help me to convince my mom's older brother of the unique relationship she had with the church. I think it was her last little joke so she can observe all the surprised expressions on the faces who loved her & who thought they knew her the most.

I read this and realized they must have thought this was the first step to rehabilitating their image as decent, forthright people. It had the opposite effect, making you realize how reprehensible these two really are. To me the worst part was using their (now mostly adult) children to pose and portray themselves as a sort of decent, regular wholesome family. I thought that was over the top. Were the kids involved in the scandal? They should have kept the kids out of it, and shows what users these two people are, both for people they don't know and for people they supposedly love. Sickening.

Alumni I personally know from that school tell me yeah, the academics were GREAT and the networking was awesome BUT....so were the drugs available to the students there. The rules are definitely not as strict as when I attended, and I think there’s a lot more acceptance of people of all backgrounds and lifestyles than when I was there. I do think the education part is very good and there are a lot of degrees to choose from and a lot of networking opportunities. Hope that helps!

Liberty University was the biggest waste of my hard earned money. I fought like hell to earn my advanced degree and was totally unaware for years of the Jerry Falwell connectedness because I was an online student. When I found out, it all made sense. I was constantly deemed as a troublemaker all because I refused to ascribe to their shame-based belief system of "do as we say but not as we do". Every class had to insert their belief system into assignments where it was not even necessary. Yet, they sell student assignments to online paper mills. I know this for a fact because I found my paper on one such site that had turned in for a particular Liberty course. Imagine taking a math class and having to explain why mathematical concepts tied into a Christian way of life or imagine a professor disagreeing with you over your life experiences as it relates to an assignment. Ridiculous, and I argued this much which is probably the reason they eventually left me alone and let me finish the degree.

I attended Liberty U for one semester and almost immediately recognized that something wasn't right with Becky and Jerry Jr. I would mention it to my parents and close friends but could never say exactly what it was about them that was so unsettling. The biggest thing, I guess, was that Jerry Jr. especially, always seemed so insincere. Not only that, they would have "select" students join them in the press box at home football games. At that time there were around 11,000 students on campus, but the favoritism shown by the Falwells to certain students created a popularity hierarchy within each graduating class similar to what you'd see at a high school (with thousands fewer students). I was not at all surprised when news broke of all this.

People like them are the reason the church congregation gets smaller and smaller each year. I grew up going to church and attended several different denominations to see how it works and the different ways people were taught. In my mid 20s I was a Sunday school teacher at my ex husband's family church. It was a nondenominational church that caters toward Native Americans. From time to time we visited other churches, and attended other churches with guest speakers coming in for a different message. I started to notice that no matter what church it was the subject of giving your home church a percentage of your income and donate towards the guest speaker and the host church. Several of them had entire sermons over it and how we were failing the Lord by keeping our money. The last straw for me was at a sister church we all visited one evening literally screamed at everyone because we did not donate to the host church and the speaker to their satisfaction. If we were not going to pay our way then we had no business coming back. We were not welcome any longer. And that's how I denounced organized religion and refuse to enter any church. I take my tides that was going to the church and buy things for the homeless and hungry. Still doing God's work. No man, ever, EVER will get in my face and scream at me while demanding I give them my money.

I was a pastor for a good while (I became permanently disable from an injury in combat & had to cease) & it was a common saying; most pastors who get into some kind of sin that topples them is because one of two things, can't keep your hand out of the offering plate &/or you can't keep your pants zipped up. People in mighty positions such as this need to be EXTREMELY careful of the wiles of the devil. You have a gigantic bullseye on you & you are under a microscope ALL the time. Just knowing how VERY many people you're going to hurt, both temporarily and eternally should dissuade you from engaging in illicit acts such as these. Once mighty men of God have destroyed so many people thinking, they'll get away with things like this; Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard et al !

When I was 17yrs old I was working for a very zealous devoted man to his religious beliefs, was a pillar of the church and community, a Sunday school teacher, he was constantly trying to get me attend his church, one weekend he went out town, he had me straight up his storage room, as was rearranging his boxes of invoices, stubble upon three boxes of hardcore pornagrafic books and spools of 8mm films, and names of his close church friends as to which one belonged to who.I always wondered why him and his friends would go on three-day church outings out of town and leave their wives at home.

I am in awe of the in-depth documentaries you publish. Also, the narrator's voice make it easier to process information as opposed to other documentaries makers who use narrators with voices that prey on the fear factor of viewers. It may sound weird or funny but in my view, I want to process content my way, and the soft, even-tempered tone of voice does just that. As a psychotherapist with keen interest in criminology, it makes your documentaries that more compelling because I am not immediately pointed to bad behaviour of the video's subject matter. Not sure if this make sense to you but I am definitely hooked on your style of documenting subjects. Can't wait for the next one to drop!

I work at a church as a maintenance guy. Over the years, I've gotten to peek behind the curtain a bit. The stories I could tell. Here's one: On a teen "mission trip" a girl got pregnant. During the bus ride there. They were not able to tell who the father was as she'd had sex with two boys. On the bus. With adult chaperones. I had a psychologist tell me once that you will never be in a room with more sex addicts than the next time you go to church.

When I heard about this (I'm a Liberty alum) I wasn't surprised so much as disgusted by the two-facedness of them. It made what happened amongst the students seem tame and trust me, there was a lot. But definitely not an lgbtqia+ friendly area, even if the admin doesn't catch you, if other students know you aren't straight they will be constantly preaching at you. Even to an ace! Which I never understood and just decided they were jealous because it seemed I couldn't share in their struggle of lust.
