It's also an expensive hose..... did you see the brand on it? I'll just stick to my Vandoren garden equipment.

I like an edgy sound that you can still pull most of the way back from. Thin tip rails, and a medium height baffle. I like Berg Larsen mouthpieces, I use a large chamber Berg on alto (95/customized rollover into drop baffle), and the original baffled version on tenor (110/1) and bari (110/2). They're a very customizable mouthpiece for the price and the stainless steel means they'll last longer. I tend to buy their discounted mouthpieces and then go over them myself before playing. I bought the Theo Wanne refacing kit, and binged MojoBari's (professional refacer/mouthpiece maker) youtube channel. It's worth learning about these things--and being able to fix them. I've bought an unplayable mouthpiece before, and now its my main piece with $0 extra put into it. *Sirvalorsax is also a great channel bc he reviews so many pieces and is such a good player.

I am new to this world and its getting frustrating trying to find the information thats delivered the way i need it in order for me to understand it. THIS is theeee EXACT type of videos i need ! cant wait till my tenor arrives ! ! ! super excited for this journey ! and kinda overwhelmed / intimidated as well cuz of how scattered he information is on this type stuff.. seems like most YT channels are trying to pitch you THEIR own product thats HIGHLY over priced. and they dont REALLY give you the info the title said the video was about. I am finding it difficult finding simple videos that give the opposite sides of the sound. example : use 1 mouthpiece than go from a very weak reed to a very strong reed. then use a diff mouthpiece with a diff scale ( 3,4,5, etc ) and do the same comparison. like start with a low # mouthpiece and then do the weak vs strong reed. then get a mouthpiece at the other end of the scale and do the same comparison with the reeds ( while playing the same tunes / music ) and explaining how each mouthpiece / reed was needed to be used in order to provide the sound that was heard ( this mouthpiece with this reed = i needed more forced air , etc etc ) thank you for this video ! its a great start for ppl like me ! :) much appreciated !

Amazing! It's crazy how far you can go without really understanding what's happening at the mouthpiece. I love a darker and more velvety sound, and I think I just took a chance on a Vandoren one day and it worked out. I've always through more expensive = better, but my dad has a Durga 5, which I've only ever played once... and I can only describe it as trying to drive a Ferrari when you don't know how to drive haha! It sounded like a car crash too! Loving the content guys!

On tenor honestly i play on a otto link super tone master of the 60s opening 6* and it's the best mouthpiece i ever play what so ever the situation. Even in classical

I have a True Tone c melody from 1921 or 1922, a True Tone Alto from 1928, and a “Ludwig” tenor (a stencil of a Windsor which is essentially a stencil of a Buescher) from 1939. I often hear that these vintage horns were designed to work with large changer mouthpieces and I know that the length of the mouthpiece (especially on the tenor) can wreak havoc on the tuning! I’m not really sure what I should be looking for or what I should try that might work better but I have been pretty content with my Meyer 5 on the alto and a Brilhart Ebolin 3 on the tenor. I only have the stock mouthpiece for the c melody but I have also tried the Meyer 5 with moderate success.

I already had the guitar pedal effect fever, now is the time for the saxophone mouthpiece fever ;-) ...BTW, The Tone King and Michael....U rock!!!!

Recent years been getting away from the edgy pop sound. When I stared playing back in the 70's I played a Berg Larsen 105/1M with a long step baffle. Then for 24 years played metal Otto Link NY7* with a slight roll over baffle. Recently been searching for a dark hr . Ended up with a WCW/Theo Wanne 56 Select. Love it!

Oh it was very well explained. I am still on the stock mp of my yani two 01 (HR 5) and looking for an upgrade for a darker and richer sound. My ideal is to sound like Ben Webster. Any recommendation?

Regardless of the types of mouthpieces you have demonstrated I was able to detect the initial stages of what could be a very impressive subtone. Well I typically go for neutral sonid because I tend to play very focused sound so medium chamber low baffle large tip opening.

whats the difference on small tipopening and a hard reed nr3.5 VS big tip opening but a soft reed nr2 everything can be counterbalanced soft hard bright dark

Which type of mouthpiece should be used for marching band?

I recently started playing soprano & have been using a Yamaha 4C mpc, which plays nice, but I am looking for a darker sound (something more "oboe-like"). Suggestions?

Try a caravan mouthpiece, the soprano sax mouthpiece has got medium open tip and it’s designed for classical playing.

Help! I recently went through four new 3D-printed mouthpieces with mixed results. I needed light-colored MPs for my alto sax in a very specific way; I use Plasticover reeds exclusively due to my doubling on other instruments/vocals when playing live (can't keep a normal reed wet enough). Needed a MP to darken/deepen the bright Plasticover sound while providing a white background for positioning those black reeds. Both my Syos and Windy City Winds models gave me a better darker sound, but all made altissimo next to impossible. I"m guessing the issue is baffle/chanber/rails, all designed for darker sound while sacrificing altissimo. Is there a compromised sort of solution, what do you think? I was advised by both companies that altissimo would be just fine with their mouthpieces . . .

Altissimo is a tricky one. Though mouthpieces can make altissimo easier (thinner rails and higher baffle pieces that allow air to travel through the piece faster can help the notes pop) really it's all about time and practice. You have players like Tivon Pennicott, who are using very dark SYOS pieces, make altissimo look easy. But then I play a similar set-up and I get nothing. @@saxworldwide thanks! I think I've put in enough practice on it already (LOL) though, and never had trouble with every "jazz" MP I've had in the past. Only when I tried to get a more "classical" sound with my Plasticovers did I have this altissimo problem. Must be chamber/baffle issues I think, and the last four 3D=printed MPs I tried were all overall larger than my previous jazz-models.

Altissimo is a funny thing, so much of it is in making sure you're using the right fingering for your horn (larger bore saxes like vintage Conns, Rampone & Cazzani can sometimes need different patterns to Selmers etc). Alongside getting the right airflow through the horn and having your overtones in place. Getting a high baffle mouthpiece can help, as this will get the air into the horn quicker which will help get the attack you need to pop the altissimo. A firmer reed can also help. But making sure you have a mouthpiece you're really comfortable with and that allows you complete control across the whole range is much more important. Overtones are king.
