if either rook takes or bishop takes, bishop xd4 will check the king and hit the knight, winning two knights for a single rook. the oppenent doesn't want to take rook so they take bishop instead, making it an equal trade.

It's a trade of 2 knights and a pawn for 1 rook (which is better for black) by taking the pawn in the middle with the bishop. After check Black takes the knight

The way it usually works in high chess, is you dont "outplay" your opponents, you just "force " them to blunder, so basically when you lose is 90% your own fault by making the mistake hence playing a bad game

He meant that that's a "bad game" for him. He holds himself to high standards, and he didn't meet those standards in that endgame. Don't accuse Hikaru of being intentionally disrespectful to his opponents if you're going to misconstrue his words like that.

Nah. Hikaru didn't even lose a match in the bullet chess championship. With a bit more time he will be better than Hikaru though, but that Hikaru is also getying older. It would be really cool if they were they met at the middle (maybe like mid 20s) and played a match. But we can only wish that that was reality 😢
