The Saddest Chord Change 😥

Музыка

This is an incredible beautiful chord change, which is not common in Jazz chord progressions. It is borrowing from minor in a major key, but it is not a minor subdominant, which is what you hear all the time in Jazz and pop music.
What do you find the saddest chord change? 😍

    I'm not that educated in music theory but i like jazz and I'm able to play many jazz/bossanova chords. I think the change between the 2nd chord and the 3rd chord of "love is a losing game" by Amy Winehouse it's so nostalgic and melancholic while having a little bit of hope when it resolves into Dmaj7 and I love it.

    Yes Cmaj7/G - Fm6(9). Or let the minor3rd and the 9 swap places to make a F6sus(#9) for more desperation. Now it resolves more into Abmay7 but also now the Fm7(9) wants the 7 in the bass.

    @@JensLarsen - I agree. “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” comes to mind as using it, even if Asus2 tonic can “clarified” as an Am or an A. (Try it. You can.) Gordon Lightfoot used that a lot. A v chord is also a relative minor to a VII chord, which is common in American folk and blues - and made its way to rock. I’ve heard it often in many European traditions as well, but I’m not well versed in those.

    I felt ok at the CM7, sad at the Gm7. I recovered slightly at the AbM7. The Fm7(9) is the AbM7 with an F tone - so it is cleverly disguised - as if the AbM7 was 'pre-conditioning our ear.' My brain hurts now. Nice progression, you can do a lot with it. I never even cried !

    This is pretty. Is there a functional explanation for what the AbM7 is doing here and why it sounds so good? It's the bVI of CM. Is that a common chord to use and is it a substitute for something else. I think it's borrowed from Cmin, right?

  • @kevindonnelly761

    @kevindonnelly761

    Ай бұрын

    The AbM7 is borrowed from the C (Parallel) minor. It is spelt: Ab, C, Eb, G. CM7 is spelt: C, E, G, B. The tones C and G are common to both chords. The tones Ab and Eb in AbM7 are a semitone Above and below (respectively) G and E of CM7 - that means they sound like they're pulling / resolving toward them. It's a nice example of tension and resolution. Harmony in Music can tell an oblique story.
