The Sad Story of my Onions - or how I still can't grow onions.

2017 was not good for onions and the alliums. 2018 started off better, I got something that looked like onions ... until I looked a bit deeper.
2019 hasn't started any better. So far I've sown 2 lots of leeks and not a single seed has germinated. Onwards and upwards!

These are onion aphids. You need not to grow anything from the onion family in that area for at least 2 seasons. Find another area to grow the onions and plant flowers around the onions that aphids don't like or something that will bring in predator bugs to eat them. I plant borage marigolds dill and basil around all my gardens. Also you could try spraying neem oil/water mixture on the onions to deter the aphids. Just spary early in the morning or later in the evening. I haven't had a lot of luck with onion but leaks I had no issue. So there is hope. 👍 Good Luck.

Hiya Melinda - good point as we have very few flowers. I need to correct that and hopefully it will help in the future. I won't be growing onions anywhere near that spot for at least a few years.

Oignons and garlic are in same family and carry same problems. One of the problem is called nematode and can be cured by planting marigold, found this solution on KZread in the garlic gardening. The second is a flies laying it’s eggs on the leafs witch becomes minuscules maggots that can travel down to the bottom and feed on the bulb. You can buy a product on Amazon that works on garlic and oignons. The name of the product is :´double side yellow sticky trap.´´. It is suppose to attract the fly and it becomes stuck to it. I am trying it for the first time this year, results to follow.

Could those be aphids? I am horrible at gardening for the most part but I do struggle with aphids and they look similar. Have a great day. You encourage me to keep gardening despite some of my shortcomings! We will win! With vermicompost I don’t think they will win for long!

Hiya CWL :-) Yes the plan is to seriously amend that patch with barrels of my own vermicompost - which will have some worms in no doubt - and then not grow onions there for at least a few years. That - and a flame thrower lol :)

Hiya Linda :) I won't be growing any onions anywhere near that bed in the near future. The manure was well aged so it should have been fine. But who knows to be honest. I'm adding my own vermicompost to it now and it's been sitting resting over winter - apart from the beetroot - so I'm hoping courgettes and cucumbers will be ok there this year. We shall see. Hope this finds you well and happy my friend :)

I got my yellow sticky trap from Amazon Friday June 12 (quite late from the post due to COVID 19). I installed two piece(4inches by 6inches)they are sticky on both side. Sunday noon I check them an surprise! There was 24 of them stuck on the sticky trap that won’t lay eggs on my garlic. Next year, I will start much sooner!

It's so annoying when you want to grow something and you spend all that time and effort but get huge problems. You seemed to have more than your fair share. When I dug up my first lot of onions last year they had white rot. I sulked for a week before I dug up the rest and luckily the rest were fine. I've had no luck with leeks and can't grow a spring onion to save my life. But I'll never give up trying. Take care and never give in Becky

I thought those bugs looked like a different color of aphid that attack our roses, so I did a little checking. Apparently, there is an Onion Aphid, and it's black, so that might be what you have. I haven't looked for what to do about them yet. I've no idea about the grey mold yet. You might want to contact the R.H.S. for what to do about the bugs. Apparently, they are an invasive, non-native species. From what I've just read, the mold infection may be a secondary problem brought on by the bugs. The bugs leave wounds that mold spores take advantage of.

I've never grown onion family before, so have no useful advice, only commiserations. This year I'm planning to grow some spring onions for the first time, but I'll try not to get my hopes too high after watching this! I do agree that you might have to admit defeat for a year or two and grow some different things to allow the pests and/or pathogens attacking your alliums to die off.

The onion aphids ravished my garlic and onions again this year but I've had a decent amount of success with neem oil this year. Garlic and onions are interplanted by some with other crops to deter aphids ... mine seem to be a magnet for them.

Really sad to hear about your infestation, alliums are such a staple for us. Could they be onion leafminer? Or onion aphids

  • @LondonWorms

The concensus is it's onion aphid. Oh well, there's always this year lol ... We use a lot of onions in cooking here too and I was soooo looking forward to a riased bed full of them but never mind - it's an improvement on last year! And we did get to freeze and use the best of them. So I'm taking the positive that it wasn't a total loss lol. Cheers my friend. Hope all is well :)

My guess: allium leaf miner larvae having a munch on the bulb, a secondary infection develops, onion aphids come to feed on the weakened plant. Need some fine mesh to stop the leaf miner flies laying their eggs.
