it all went wrong when the license that tsw held ended in 1992 that was a truly independent broadcaster, i never watch itv now it's beyond a joke.

It is hellish what has happened to British Television, both BBC &, "the other side". I am under 50 yet remember the late night "close down" & being reminded to turn our television sets off. Our generation were/are loyal, & we felt we were heard. Regional news WAS regional/local. Now, you are lucky to have a person posting things on the internet from your area. I do not want HD, or "green screens". Give us quality!

Feel so sorry for Westcountry! You only need to ask ex-Grampian TV staff to know how they would feel, Grampian were robbed of their unique identity no thanks to STV!

When ITV 1+1 started round here, ITV thought we were part of Wales - whether you were in Swindon, Bristol, Taunton, Truro, Cardiff, Swansea, Aberystwyth, Llandudno, Rhyl or Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, you got the same programmes - fortunately in English!

Viewers won't notice - they did and left it in droves. We all knew it wasn't live and recorded from Bristol. Views like that lost ITV it's respect.

"I've got some very sad news to give you in that sadly you won't be able to see us Invision any longer and the popular indents and jingles introducing all of your favourite programmes will be dropped with immediate effect."

Not just Westcountry that is the problem. Carlton as well. Actually it's a bigger problem. Michael Green was blocked by the IBA to buy a whole of Thames, and he challenged Thames for the awards. I think Thatcher was in favor of Green and Carlton. Carlton doesn't even produce any show, unlike its weekend counterpart in London. Carlton London is simply an affiliate and a shareholder of the network. Actually, TSW is just the better Westward using the same people. TVS's assets are currently owned by Disney/ABC, which was a shareholder of GMTV.

To Americans, it would be as if WTNH New Haven/Hartford shut down it's news department and studios and instead began broadcasting local news from WCVB Boston.

That sounds very terrible. Although both New Haven and Boston are part of New England, I certainly feel New England is not all about Boston.

I lived in the West Country for over 50 years until 2018. During that time we lost Westward, the best regional station ever, replaced by TSW which was not as good but still ok, then by Westcountry, which wasn't much good but infinitely preferable to what we get these days. No wonder people don't watch anymore.

@@tadc345fan I was a huge fan of both Westward TV and TSW. The BBC didn't get a look in. I hated Westcountry TV as it was remote and impersonal

ITV Westcountry is still there, as ITV West-Country (due to Westcountry's merger with HTV West).

What?! Everyone still wants a seperate franchise for the southwest of England. It started with legend Westward, followed by swallower legend TSW, and ended with Westcountry. ITV West Country is a new thing. It's no longer either Westcountry or HTV West.

ITV franchises need to pay the treasury, but they don't need to fix. They should've only been giving a percentage of income to the treasury. If only the 1990 Broadcasting Act didn't come, all franchises were still independent from each other. The only thing that should've required is quality programming, as well as a great business strategy.

Farewell, ITV Westcountry! It was fun while it lasted!

Viewers won't notice... and ferrets...

UTV is owned by ITV PLC, however they have wisely IMO taken the decision not to rebrand.

i live in devon and i think its stupid saying bristol is westcountry u seen where its is!! thats not devon/cornwall, hence the name westcountry i see a 5 min about where i live thats it i like the news ( yes im sad :P)

TheGreatOmegaDragon Even prior to the merger, here in Taunton, I always referred to HTV "West" as HTV East and BBC Points West as BBC Points East - news rarely ventured much west of Bath - all those places are east of Taunton, so it's HTV East and Points East!

Westward was the legend of the southwest. When they lost the franchise to TSW, which supposedly going to be fresh, TSW just swallowed all Westward property and just became a new, full-fledged incarnation of Westward. When TSW got damned by the Broadcasting Act, all hope was lost for the new Westcountry.

And Lord Grade who was behind this decimation of itv at the tine, is set to become offcom chairman......

That is incorrect - ITV Westcountry broadcast for *16* years; 2009 - 1993 = 16.

"Your watching STV2. We're sorry but due to the Stv Group being taken over by ITV, we have gone bankrupt and are forced to shut down forever."

I started watching STV in the mid-80s and the station was the best of all time from then up until the late 2000s. The station as a whole started to deteriorate around 2007, however It's more shite now and nothing to do with ITV. It seems to me that you are determined to blame ITV nevertheless rather than look at the genuine facts! A bailout or takeover from ITV would be the best option to keep this region on-air, as well as bring back previously culled programmes by STV management. STV2 should never have gone on air or even been thought about either, as a result of viewing figures rapidly declining in recent years.

@@redtekki Yes it would and it must happen! Poor managerial decisions, financial mismanagement, lack of clarity over servicing of debt, excessive job losses leaving staff at skeletal levels, political posturing and appeasing, silencing independent journalism, viewing figures at an all time low, dependent on inexperienced staff...the list of errors goes on! If STV are to ever return to the good old days then an ITV takeover is the only way.

@@StagecoachMANALX300 The competition agency thingy that regulates ownership of franchises won't allow that. I doubt ITV can monopolize like the BBC, and Channels 4 and 5.

@@StagecoachMANALX300 Also, STV is now the 2 last franchises independent from ITV plc. STV Central, which is the main STV, and STV North, which was Grampian.
