Ойындар

So what's in the latest edition of this classic wargame? Pretty much everything. Check out all the variants and optional rules included in this deluxe version from GMT and Consim Press. This is a review of what's included in this edition rather than a review of the game itself.

    This was a great overview of the optional rules. Well done.

    Thanks. Given how well known the game is, I figured folks might be most interested in the extras.

    I played the AH version a few times, it was a fun game, with just the right level of granularity without turning into a monster game.

    Yes, I agree. And that's probably why it's still being played after all these years.

    I played my brother’s Jedko version over 40 years ago when I was a teenager. This video is a nice taster for me while I wait for my deluxe copy to make its way here. Due next week!

    I didn't have the Jedko, but did have the AH version back in 77. Cool to think this game is still attracting new fans.

    An old classic for sure, it has aged well - I played the AH edition endlessly, such a playable and fun game.

    I think Third Reich was the first old-school hex and counter game I played back in the 70s. But TRC was second. I did not play it endlessly as others did as my first opponent made me feel so terrible for losing that first game. He soured me on a game I should have loved. I have, of course, come back to it.

    Thanks. I thought looking at all the optionals would be interesting to both folks who have a previous version and gamers looking to decide if it's worth getting.

    I hear you. The choice was easy for me as my AH copy got wet 20 years ago, so I needed a new one anyway

    Fantastic overview. I've never played The Russian Campaign. It's clearly a classic so decided to get both the Compass reprint (to play and experience first) and this GMT version to then try all the additional extras, enhancements and variants over the years. :)

    Deluxe edition with unmounted maps? 🤔😂 where’s the deluxe other than via surcharge. Nice review, thanks 🙏 It is a great version/system for this particular conflict, I have been enjoying it since version 3 (original). The optional rules add great depth, but you need to be careful not to overcomplicate a slick gaming experience & the improved weather mechanic is another great improvement.

    Ha! Well, I'm pretty sure mounted maps are available. I think the Deluxe part is bringing all the possible variants together in one cohesive package. I'm like you, my first version was the AH version in the 70s. I'm still into playing it without any variants, but I'm not adverse to trying new things. Just so long as it's only one at a time. Otherwise you're right, you could bury what makes the game such a classic.

    Can you play it as though it were close to the original without optional rules

  • @PushingCardboard

    @PushingCardboard

    Yes, as far as I can tell, you can play it just like the final Avalon Hill Edition. And then pick and choose between the long menu of optional rules. The only rule I think they might have tinkered with is something to do with railroads.

    Played this a lot back in the 70s. I prefered AH's Russian Front. Always thought the Russian Campaign felt too generic, too cookie cutter.
