THE RUNNING MAN (Arnold Schwarzenegger) - REEL ACTION

Ойын-сауық

Imagine a world, where an oppressed people are ruled by a police state and kept pacified by a game show where people compete in violent games of sport...and Arnold Schwarzenegger runs around in skintight yellow lycra while dropping dime one-liners. I'm here to tell you that world does exist. It's time to play THE RUNNING MAN!
It's another episode of Reel Action and we're looking at another Schwarzenegger joint that's close to my heart, right up there with PREDATOR, which was released the same year. It's 1987's THE RUNNING MAN, a shockingly prescient look at the influence of media and a predictor of our reality TV culture. Oh and it also has some badass gladiatorial fights glossed up to pro wrestling levels of ridiculousness, and featuring at least three grapplers to back play murderous "stalkers" with comic book villain monickers. It was The Hunger Games before anybody knew what the "f" a Mockingjay was. Hell, I still don't know.
THE RUNNING MAN comes from the shocker twisted mind of Stephen King under his Richard Bachman alias, who has imagined a dystopia where America is ruled by a totalitarian government. Criminals or those deemed dangerous to the state, aren't incarcerated but made contestants in a deadly game show called THE RUNNING MAN. There, they must try to make it through the various sectors while avoiding death at the hands of the "Stalkers", outlandish Mortal Kombat-esque baddies with names like Buzzsaw, Subzero, and Captain Freedom! That last one could be an Avenger!

Indeed : the movie seems much more inspired by French director Yves Boisset's 1883 movie "Le Prix du Danger" (aka 'The Prize of Peril'), based on a short story bearing the same title by Robert Sheckley, which had been adapted already by German Television as "Der Millionenspiel" in 1970.

I kinda prefer when the movie and the book are on opposite wavelengths, since you're not just getting a live action version of something that already exists on the page. The one exception is when a movie all but ignores what the book was about (e.g. "I am Legend" with Will Smith or King's own "Lawnmower Man"), but if it's in the same general direction, I think it's not necessarily a knock against the movie that it's "not like the book." Still, if it does deviate heavily, it should at least be good in spite of it: Stephen King famously hates Kubrick's version of the Shining because it's so different narratively, but at the same time it's still a visually striking film.

In the original story Running Man was played all across America. The “contestant” had to send one video per day to the people at the Games Corp so thy could show it on TV. The person that reported the contestant that resulted in a kill got paid a huge sum of money with a similar prize for the runner. Richards eventually steals an enormous aircraft and crashes it into the Games Corp building. Much darker ending than the one in the film.

The french adaptation of Robert Sheckley's The Prize of Peril is quite good to. The director chose a more contemporary angle and more "reality show" than for Running man. But I think it's closer to the sci-fi short story than the schwarzenegger movie.

A classic tale of survival! Richard Connell wrote "The Most Dangerous Game" in 1924, adapted in cinema by Ernest B. Schoedsack and Irving Pichel in 1932. Robert Sheckley wrote "The Prize of Peril" in 1958, same story with the modern social dimension of television. Elio Petri made the movie "The 10th Victim" in 1965. Stephen King wrote the more futuristic "The Running Man" in 1982 under the name Richard Bachman. In 1983 Yves Boisset made "The Prize of Peril", and then Paul Michael Glaser made "The Running Man" in 1987. Different adaptations of the same universal and eternal tale of survival 👍

I think "Climbing for Dollars" still has potential to make it as a series; let's do a pilot episode and put it out there...

Love that movie. An 80s classic to be sure. Though its fair to say movie script did more then just limit the locations, the book was a lot more of a downer.

10 out of 10 Stallone's? Is this equivalent to 10 out of 10 Jason Statham's? Asking for a friend.

one of my favorite movies growing up in the 80s. I was a bit surprised to read the book later in my 30s, many people always say the books are better...not sure if I agree with this one the book was good but it didn't do it for me that this classic did.
