The Royal Enfield Super Meteor | Can it Pick Up the Vacant Middleweight Crown?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The full review of Royal Enfield's new Super Meteor 650. Since the Harley Davidson Sportster 883 was discontinued in 2021, no one has taken the crown of mid sized, classically styled cruiser. Can Royal Enfield do it, with their Super Meteor?

I have been saying this for some time now. HD made a very poor decision in perhaps the worst economic time to make such a decision to go all premium. To compound it, they’ve alienated future younger riders from buying into their brand, while RE has done the complete opposite, and I think they will be rewarded for that now and in the future, while HD will pay the price.

Have you seen the SWM Stormbreaker? It's a Chinese/Italian clone of Harley-Davidson Sportster forty-eight, with an air-cooled V-Twin. That could well be an affordable Harley for the masses. It's priced at 9,990 euros (~$11,000)

The only thing that's stopping younger buyers is the price. As far as their range goes it's still pretty good. I'd personally (along with others, I'm sure) rather buy a 3-5 year old Sportster instead of the new models but they've still got great bikes such as the Street Bob and Low Rider S. In my opinion, and not meant in a harsh way, Royal Enfield has only captured younger minds because of the price and the small CC capacity. They're not realistically long term bikes because you'll get bored of a 650cc pretty quickly and won't be able to readily do long tours on it.

Freddie just has a way of communicating the information that we WANT to hear. Specs sheets only tell you so much. Also, he doesn’t posture like he’s a YouTubing version of Rossi. Just an ordinary guy who loves bikes and knows how to talk about them in a human way. Another great video. Also, I agree… for all the effort they put into making this a premium-feeling offering, why-oh-why did they opt for those God-awful offset plasticky gauges. Completely lets the bike down. They could have easily just fitted the Interceptor gauges if it was a budgeting issue. Utterly baffling.

That's because nowadays every motorbike journalist and youtubers are talking about features and lots of features for this or that price point which is very annoying even here in india ppl will compare this bike with similarly priced offering instead of the class and type comparison even many reviews of the classic 350 youtubers and motor journalist will complain about why the classic doesn't have a digi speedo and lots of unnecessary features that comes with modern bikes, because it's 21st century like hell bro why do you think it's called a classic in the first place

I think it absolutely beautiful 😍 The rear mudguard/fender is a work of art. My only objection is the Roger Ramjet sign on the right side casing above rear brake. A simple speedometer was all this bike required, no need for navigation or cheap digital extras. The old Royal Enfield badge on the tank would have been perfect. Beautiful Beautiful bike.❤❤ Great review Freddie 👏

You two are a force to be reckoned with, Freddie’s presentation, coupled with Monika’s production make it so polished it a pleasure to watch, even when it’s a bike I’m not really interested in. For me I think the wheels make it look cheap, especially the non disc side of the front wheel. Cruisers aren’t my thing but I like the proportions. It looks a bigger cc than it is.

This is the best written and recorded review that i've already saw about a cruiser. I had Harley 883 and 1200, Bonneville T120, and a Royal Continental GT, but i've missed my cruiser days so much, and has fallen in love with bonneville engine that now i own a Speedmaster for 5 days and already did the first service (600 miles) because i'm in love with her! But, if i had the need to do a downgrade, i'll think i would go for a Super meteor after your review.

Superb review as always, Freddie. Given the lack of an entry level Harley option and the Super Meteor's status quo-defying affordability, the temptation is definitely there. That said, the one possible deal breaker is its weight in relation to its power. In my case, it's tough to transition from a bike that weighs 419 lb's with 150 horsepower to a 500 lb bike with less than 50 - granted its a non performance oriented cruiser, of course. For better or worse, us yanks aren't unlike the Germans in that we often care more about spec sheets than raw character. 😉

I really love this bike. It's on the list I have, with a handful of other bikes, for what I might like once I graduate from my 125. I don't know what it is though that just seems slightly off to me. It's not the tripper navigation, I actually like that, or at least the idea. Rather than having my smartphone on the bars, I think the tripper is a good compromise. I know some people might just say to rely on road signs or figure out where you're going then ride, but I find GPS navigation takes your mind off worrying where you're going, allowing you to focus on what's happening on the road.

Hi Freddie & Monika. I started my cruiser journey on the Rebel 500 (chosen over the vulcan at the time) which was ideal to begin with & when I outgrew it I went to the 865 Bonny America (2011), an engine I still love to this day. I dare say if this bike was on the market at the time it would have given the America / Speedmaster a real run for it's money before it upgraded to a 1200 & as you say somewhat $ priced itself out of this market. I'm glad you went to lengths to point out that cruiser riders care less about statistics than they do about aesthetics & the riding experience. Another great video & review...

Well done. I rode one of these a month ago. We have just gotten these here in the States. I took a twenty mile ride on a backroad with three S curves. As the bike only had two miles on the clock, I took it easy, but I did ease it up to 65 mph a couple of times. Handling was very good. The front end was solid, but the rear shocks needed to be dialed up a couple of notches. Riding position is ideal for me and the bike held a line nicely in the curves. I really wish , as you stated, that the speedo was in the center. As far as I'm concerned they could offer a model without the Tripper that I won't ever use. BTW, I do have a couple of XL Harleys and my '06 Roadster 1200 is my favorite bike. The new replacement models have been getting dusty on my two local H-D dealers' showroom floors. Nobody wants those FUGLY things. I can see one of these RE Super Meteors is my future.

What is the deal with the muddy fields or are you getting some practice for the new Scram review. Keep up the sterling work.

Great vlog, great review . Freddie I think Royal Enfield will be contacting you and sponsoring your channel and possibly more importantly they could be letting you have your own Super Meteor to the specs you pointed out. I could tell how passionate you were so if Royal Enfield didn't pick up on that, there's something wrong. Well done you 👍

Like every other reviewer I've seen, you compared the Super Meteor 650 to the Honda Rebel 500. I don't understand why nobody is comparing it to the Honda Shadow 750 instead. The shadow also has the classic cruiser styling, and is similar in terms of size, weight, power and price. The Shadow offers fewer features for a little more money, but it does bring a proper V-twin motor and a reputation for reliability and durability that it's built over the last few decades. I'd love to see someone do a head-to-head comparison video.

Not sure if it's the same case in UK, but in most of the EU countries (if not all), Honda Shadow 750 is just not available.

I wonder why they didn’t use the combined instrument/Sat nav that they have on the new Himalayan? That centrally mounted would work perfectly 👍 I agree though it’s a nice looking bike which I’m sure will sell well

That navigation system was designed for the new Himalayan 450 which was recently launched. The Super Meteor 650 was launched way back in Jan of 2023. In future we might see it.

Royal Enfield has said they intend to dominate the midsized motorcycle market. With the Super Meteor and the shot gun there is no reason they won't be able to achieve that goal. After riding lots of used bikes, I did five months of research and then bought the Super Meteor as my first brand new bike. I have had several brand-new cars I felt like it was time for me to get a brand-new bike. The Super meteor checked all the boxes, It has plenty of power to do 80 MPH on the U.S interstates. It is very reliable, the cost is reasonable, the comfort of the ride is second to none, the way it has no vibration at 75MPH is wonderful.

Well put sir! You always seem to catch the essence of a motorcycle and I think you were spot on with this one. A beautiful practical bike with soul. If I didn't already have a perfect for me RE350 and a little more space in the storage I might be seriously considering it. Oh, what the hell, I could maybe squeeze it in, or am I dreaming?

I do like the bike overall, currently running a RE Clubman 500 cafe racer myself. Finally a manufacturer put some thought to the switchgear and got away from the generic plastic. However I really don’t like the cast wheels and would like to see a spoked option ( maybe they do have that already?). Great review and very watchable as usual, thanks and Happy New Year.

Oh and one other thing. These two make the best vids out there. This is a brilliant, informative, heartfelt review of a motorcycle. Want a travel show instead? Freddie and Monika (please go back to the Canary Islands) remains with me a couple of years later. Freddie and Monika having a coffee. Yep. We'll watch it, and enjoy. Thanks to you both for the...entertainment seems too simple a word...fun and friendship (in a way), the humour, the adventure, the niggles, the triumphs (he he), and the joy. Can't wait for more. Freddie has become the consummate presenter and Monika has the eye that makes everything look so balanced and gorgeous. She is truly special. Then there's the music. Ok, that's more than one more thing. Happy new year to Freddie and Monika and to all of you watching (you have excellent taste). Ride and drive and travel and just be generally safe. Love and peace and cool vibes from New Zealand guys. See you in 2024.

Great review Freddie. You touched on some good points talking about “purity” of styling. While “pure” is more of a marketing term, I believe you meant simple. If RE would have stuck with simpler styling, reducing the amount of contrasting, and created some simple chrome or silver colorways along with some black colorways, this bike could have made a bigger splash in the vacant pool of cruisers. The wheels are great for the darker, agrresive colorways, but a brighter bike would benefit from some wire spoked wheels. They also can ditch the giant R logo on the case and need another designer to take a look at that side panel. Knowing RE’s tenacity for iteration on design, hopefully we see some of these changes with model updates. It’s a shame so many companies are losing touch with design, especially in the market of affordable and sensible bikes. The world is a better place when more people ride, and bikes like the Super Meteor help get us closer to that world.
