The Roman Relics Under The Firing Range | Time Team | Odyssey

Tony and the Team get a unique opportunity to dig at an army firing range at High Ham in Somerset and investigate a series of mosaics first discovered 150 years ago. Everything indicates a Roman villa, though perhaps not on such a grand scale. The inhabitants may have been Romanised Britons, living from the 2nd to the early 5th century. Matt volunteers as a slave for the day. When the cold east wind sets in, Phil and the other diggers temporarily "down tools". They are joined by Martin Brown from the Defence Estates and Roman finds specialist Philippa Walton.

It's impossible it seems to tire of watching and being consumed in wonder & surprise of Time Team. Brings up memories of the Cornflakes ad from 1950's with Tony The Tiger's tune of "Can't get enough of that ..." Time Team, Time Team... Kept me sane & human amidst the 1% Pandemic instituted, planned, war measures, brainwashing, confusing, terrifying citizens globally, alienating & frozen in mindless insanity with Not drop of Transparency, rational based in SCIENCE! Time Team saves me with it's humanity, humour & normal humans with working & informed minds.

I love Time Team! It's amazing, there's been ten some odd seasons of people digging on the history channel and they've found next to nothing; yet every week the commercials are, "wait til you see what's next!?!" Yet Time Team actually accomplishes something in just 3 days...

Some times I need to clean ice off of freezer floors to prevent slips and falls. Commercial freezers have fans that run while the door is closed to maintain max cold. I will not work in the freezer if the fans fail to shut off. A 10 mile an hour wind at zero degrees F is way to cold to work in. Phil was absolutely right.

Isn't it wonderful that when you started watching Time Team and the camera showed the trench you couldn't tell what the heck they were looking at without the highlighting, but NOW after watching the shows,(obsessively for some) you CAN SEE what they're looking for BEFORE they use the hightlight overlay? We're becoming amateur archaeologists!! yea!!

  • @RobKoelman

GPR is not a specific military type of equipment and John - as a professional geophysicist - most likely had the most modern type available at that time. The details of the underground archaeological structures on the map that his team generated have a much higher definition than the earlier ones on the map generated by the MoD.

@@RobKoelman Say what you will but I've been watching Time Team for at least 15 years, and the MoD's survey was the best-looking one I've seen in the entire series. GPR is also used in military convoys to identify IEDs, so, I'm not at all surprised that the kit was available to them.
