    Besides the jingling and the alck of ability to look down yeah. It was alot cheaper and quicker to make than chainmail but I also feel it gives a special look to the roman army. A unique look which imediatly identifies them as a roman.

    The Latin name was focale, and it was worn to prevent the armor from chafing your neck. I believe it was generally made of wool, just like their bad-weather cloak (called the sagum) and helmet padding.

    they would wear pants wool socks that sort of thing all based on weather but they avoided lower body armor because the shield worked well enough and they prefered the mobility. There were a form of shin armor that strapped onto the sandals but i dont think it was used often at all.

    @DavidOwlGrove It was actually quite light, most likely around 40-60 lbs total. The shield would be the most cumbersome piece of equipment.

    Pre.marian where not divided by clases, but by experience in the battlefield, hastati being the newest recruits(first to third large battle) principes being more experienced(third batlle and on) and the triarii being the elite veterans, of course the first where the ones in greater number and with greater losses, and rarely would the triarii have to fight, losing few and so needing less, leaving most up and coming soldiers to remain as principes for a long time

    mostly centurions would wear greaves. but more of a "show off" rather than for protection. they DID wore greaves a lot during the dacian wars, as a way to protect themselves agains the Falx.

    This is a very advanced and expensive type of armor that did not appear until late in the Empire and then, as far as I know, only for select units. Throughout Roman history, first-line infantry wore simple chain mail armor. Roman chain armor was of excellent quality and very effective, it just didn't look as impressive as the segmented armor. The segmented armor is called "lorica segmentata", a name invented by modern historians. We don't know the actual Roman name as no records remain.

  • @paprskomet

    @paprskomet

    6 жыл бұрын

    Actually segmental form of armour(which existed as technology already many centuries before Romans first used it) was safely in use already during final decade of the 1st century BC-so very long before late Empire(whatever you mean with it).During late antiquty(by which you possibly mean that late Empire-although east actually continued for other 1000 years after fall of the western half) this torso armour was not used however,although it remained in use as limb protection.We have absolutely no evidence for segmental armour being anyhow significantly more expensive than other major armour types nor that Romans held segmental armour in anyhow higher asteem than other types but modernly this armour have very overhyped cult of exaggerated worshiping.We also lack evidence that it would be anyhow limited to just special lelected soldiers.Since fragments of this armour are relatively common find at Roman army sites it does not give impression of something reserved for elite only.

    Actually, the lorica segmentata was very common amongst the western legions (not so much, if at all, in the warm climates of Anatolia and the middle east, due to the fact the segmentata turned you into a walking tin can that fries you). And there was also the Lorica Squamata (roman scale armour), which was also superior to the Hamata, and covered more of the warriors body (usually the upper arms, torso and thighs..

    @effigyoflight Nope, that's the effect of having an Anglo-centric view of history. The longbow is a very basic and ancient bow design, Otzi the Icemen from 3300 BCE carried a yew longbow, practically identical to the English weapon. It's just that no culture at this point used it en masse in battle like the English did later (well that's not completely accurate either, the Nubians did actually, but they weren't that well known)
