"Street Fighting Man" by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyrics:
Ev'rywhere I hear the sound
Of marching charging feet, boy
'Cause summer's here and the time is right
For fighting in the street, boy
Well now, what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock n' roll band?
'Cause in sleepy London town
There's just no place for a street fighting man, no
Hey think the time is right
For a palace revolution
But where I live the game
To play is compromise solution
Well now, what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock n' roll band?
'Cause in sleepy London town
There's just no place for a street fighting man, no. Get down.
Hey so my name is called Disturbance
I'll shout and scream
I'll kill the king, I'll rail at all his servants
Well, what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock n' roll band?
'Cause in sleepy London town
There's just no place for a street fighting man, no
Get down

If you like that kind of experimental stuff I'd recommend 'Swans' with the album 'The Seer'. Of course stones were among the first to experiment with that kind of sound but they inspired a whole genre by doing so. And Swans are among the most unusual yet 'classic' (acoustic instruments, not so much synths) bands in that particular direction of experimental/psychedelic rock. Might be something you'd be into!

One of the Stones' best songs - Keith Richards' acoustic rhythm intro is from a different dimension. Great video, too.
"The original Rolling Stones were so incredible thanks in large part to Brian Jones. After all, it was his band originally. He was a fantastically creative person. One of the last times I met him was during the sessions for the Beggars Banquet album; we sat in a circle on the studio floor. To my right was Keith Richards with an acoustic guitar, to my left was Charlie Watts with his antique miniature drum kit. Brian sat opposite me. We played big Moroccan drums with him while recording the basic track Street Fighting Man. This is one of the best memories I have in my life."--Dave Mason, British and American vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, musical producer.

I lived in London in the late 60s as a 20 year old, anyway I went to France for a short visit and got stuck in a City where there were riots in the streets, Molotov Cocktails being thrown, and people would have their windows opened wide and the Stones would be playing this very song... According to legend, Richards and Watts laid down the basic track for this song at home on cassette, with Watts playing a toy drum kit. They later couldn’t recapture the vibe of the original recording, so they stuck with it, adding overdubs to beef up the sound - proving that a true artist can create greatness with the simplest tools.

I heard that also... And from what I've been able to look up, It reads true; from Mr Richards himself...
'What can a poor boy do but sing in a rock and roll band?' is one of the greatest rock and roll lines of all time. It only reached #48 in Billboard, due to many radio stations' refusal to play the song based on what were perceived as subversive lyrics. Because of the 1968 National Democratic Convention and the possibility of the song inciting further violence, Chicago radio stations refused to play the song. "Of course it's subversive! It's stupid to think you can start a revolution with a record. I wish you could." - Mick Jagger

@@davebartholome2924 It's a really interesting one, this period in music. Shows you how studied song lyrics were back then. The Beatles (specifically Lennon) got a huge amount of stick for Revolution, "But when you talk about destruction / Don't you know that you can count me out" which appeared as "out... in" on the White Album. He couldn't decide which side of the fence he came down on. This song is more prescient now than ever. Up with the *populares*. Long live torches and pitchforks.
I may listen to Beatles albums, but I love the Stones singles. They have more on my daily playlist than any other artist. Street Fighting Man is at the very top. This insistent shuffle and vocal delivery always gets me. This song is a constant reminder of when the Stone are firing on all cylinders...yeah, nothing and nobody can come close.
RIP Charlie. You were always my favourite Rolling Stone. Always in the background of the showmanship with a cheeky smirk but at the very heart of the music holding it all together. You were the solid beat of my generation.
These will become the iconic videos for the Rolling Stones...
My old man was '68. street fighting man against police and regime in Belgrade. This is his song.

Definitely one of the 5 greatest songs ever in the RS's oevre! If I ever grow tired of listening to this one I shall have my head examined!

Definitely, in the top five!
Hypnotically Venomous.
I never liked the song when I was younger but it's really grown on me. One of my favorites now

Agreed. I don't listen to much music outside of classical and video game stuff, but I liked this song a lot after hearing it in Fantastic Mr. Fox (great movie btw). After listening to this song and Paint it Black, I'm 90% sure that they have a sitar. That's pretty unique considering the sitar is not what you'd think of when you think Rock and Roll... Maybe the inclusion is due to Ravi Shankar's influence on music, which I'm pretty sure paved the way for the psychedelic genre. I think he also taught the Beatles how to play sitar. Idk I'm not a music historian, so I could be wrong
Charlie Watts was the best drumner. We will miss him quite alot.!
This is a masterpiece
Make Love NOT War ✌️💖
Charlie was incredible on this track and even better on Gimme Shelter. The passing of Mr Watts was one of the darkest days for Rock n Roll.
This has got to be in their top 5 songs ever
Easily the best thing the Stones ever recorded. Bar none.
Nothing on the radio these days comes remotely close...sheeit!
MAN - this song really, fires me up- especially when I sing and strum along, to acoustic guitar- WOW- how bout you?
Why we will always love the Rolling Stones? It's been a while since the Stones have recorded anything memorable .We love them for what they represent in our lives. Some years ago, when the Stones came to Brazil, I saw both their gigs It struck me then that the reason we still take the old material so seriously is because Jagger takes it seriously himself. He sings each song like he’s just released the record last week and puts so much effort into each performance that you can’t help being seduced by his charisma. Like Street Fighting Man released on match 1968. I was Just 17

Well said my friend; they were the voice that shouted the loudest…in ‘68, when I was 16!
One of my favorite Stones songs.
Timeless 50 years later. Just awesome.
the first 30 seconds of this song are my ring tone. I have no musical skill what so ever but the guitar and drum beat, DAMN!!! I freakin love it!! The first 30 seconds of this song is the best intro of any song in the world, I can play this on repeat for hours. Yes it's a very powerful message too.
Keith plays acoustic guitars and bass, Brian plays sitar and tamboura, Charlie pays a small drum kit from the 1930's, Dave Mason plays a shenai and bass drum.

Still remember that guitar intro playing over the closing credits of the movie V for Vendetta. Shook the theater.
These Stones lyrics videos are fuckin brilliant! I've listened to these old tunes a zillion times since the 60s but this makes em new again. Terrific stuff says I. Cheers.

This song is on the upper crust of my pie of musical greatness
Hell yeah! Rolling Stones Street Fighting Man! G-Sevvvvveeeen!!
...maybe the best song in music history. Mick's voice, Keef guitar in Open G, the perfect Charlie's drum beat, Richards bass lines, that amazing outro. OMG
‘Get Down,’ to Street Fighting Man! Love this song! Angie
RIP Charlie Watts. Thanks for all the great drumming.
V for Vendetta, we need a man like V right now, especially due to the way both the US and Britain seem to be going right now.
No matter how much people really really really want the Beatles to be better, they are not. Stop lying to yourselves.
