celestialangel666 I agree that she was the special sauce that made the song go but most people have never heard her version which is just as good as the Stones version. It also has cool horns and in my opinion cooler guitar, especially the solo. The last minute really picks up steam. It’s pretty hard rocking for a gospel singer.

Peter Clinch I want you to know that I am extremely jealous of the things you were able to live through and get to experience. Now a days, people my age (19) only want to go see concerts if it’s the latest drug addicted rapper. Honestly, I don’t find all rap music to be terrible but I’d much rather listen to classic rock and see rock concerts. Seems like we are few and far between now though. But these songs will live on forever while modern music dies after a few months. I can’t name very many pop/rap songs in the past five years I consider listening to today.

It's cool that you are from the rock era, my dad was born in 1930 and was before the rock era to a degree. I remember him relaxing to easy listening music, remember that stuff, a lazy river version of Light My Fire, or something from The Music Man etc. I used to tell him how great rock music was and he'd look at me like I was an alien from outer space. He left before that boat was even built, I'm so glad I'm from the rock era, and not before or after like the shit they play today. Born in 65 my favorite stuff is all the sixties and seventies music, most of it a little before my time, but not before my heart was taken prisoner by the music.

Hurl. Exile on Main Street was their last good album. 1972 ? They have solidly sucked ever since. AND couldn't hold a candle to Zep and The Who. Not even close. The Beatles...well...lets just leave that into a class of it's own....those fuckers changed history/civilization that we're still living in now. Their impact will be studied for centuries.

@@satexman2585 Led Zep' a band whose legacy was to become the headbangers band of choice for balding middle aged men with distended bellies full of beer and acne scarred hormonal, teenagers with learning difficulties. They represented the death of 60's musical/cultural experiment. They became along with all those other worthless bands -Deep Purple/Black Sabbath/Judas Priest, the lumpen postscript to the greatest renaissance in new music. They left no cultural impact on their time other than big hair, bad clothes and a bunch of sweaty testosterone driven adolescents - born well after they quit - sniffing each others rear ends in anticipation of the next masturbatory guitar solo. Zep were nothing more than a rather superior covers band(covers unaccredited) - who stole, like everything else, their sound from Jeff Beck's first two albums, effects from Hendrix and even the violin bow on guitar from Eddie Phillips of The Creation. Page was an exciting if not a very innovative guitarist as was the bass player. Unfortunately they had a lumpen panel beater drummer who replaced "swing" with leaden bombast; and a poodle haired singer who always sung like a castrati on helium who'd caught his genitals in his zip. Shame Terry Reid - Page's first choice as vocalist - didn't accept the offer, he was/is a far superior vocalist, comparable to Steve Marriott, an excellent lyricist, an all round instrumentalist and great rhythm guitar player rather beautiful too. I would have fired Bonham when Hendrix died and hired Mitch Mitchell as drummer - the airbourne jazz rock drummer of funk, space and time. Just imagine what a truly great innovative rock 'n' roll band that would have made with Page, Jones, Reid and Mitchell. Then all those Zep fans might not feel so embarrassed that Zep were never anything more than a tribute band who ripped-off Jeff Beck's first two albums. Zep were sledge hammer riff masters, some of them rather good, save the drumming and the vocals, whose ability to write songs, when not stealing them from other more innovative artists - the bathetic lyrics largely the responsibility of Plant - never rose above cod Tolkienesque tropes meets Gollum as the 'Back Door Man' who's gonna ball ya for the thousandth time all night loooong(yawn) - So err!! Shaaaaaaaake for me gurl!! At the last count there were well all over fifty cases of plagiarism pending a few having been settled out of court - take a bow: Willie Dixon,Joan Baez/Anne Brendon, Bert jansch, Spirit, Jake Holmes, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King, Jeff Beck, Eddie Cochran, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Robert Parker, Moby Grape, Bukka White, Sleepy John Estes, Blind Willie Johnson, Bob Dylan et al. Nothing wrong with doing covers; unfortunately all the above artists work -riffs/melodies/chords/lyrics - were originally credited to Page/Plant and or Led Zep'. Shameless!!! Unlike the Stones who credited the original blues artists and made sure they got the royalties, Zep stole the original artists songs, claiming them as their own and had to be dragged kicking and screaming to court as the many court cases brought against Zep for blatant plagiarism will attest. Zep's appeal was by and large an infantile disorder for rather dim male headbangers who found Hendrix or Beck too complicated. The Stones were sensualists who changed music and the broader culture. Zep changed nothing except their underpants.

Merry did it three times and choosing to use the track where her voice cracked was pure genius.

The imperfection is what makes music perfect. That's what music today misses. I'm not bashing today's music, I like some of it. I just think the reason barely any of it is as memorable is because it's over produced.

Merry Clayton was the backup singer. Got a call in the middle of the night, while pregnant, that the Stones were looking for a singer on this song. She went to the studio in curlers and blew their socks off! Toured for years after that night with the Stones.

She didn't tour with them. Lisa Fischer sang her vocals on Gimme Shelter until after the 2015 US tour. Now Sasha Allen does it. Lisa was with them for over 20 years and had a much better suited voice for the song, but Sasha isn't phenomenal as well. None of them match Merry Clayton though. They're great in their own way. Sidenote: she lost the baby she was pregnant with after recording the song. She has said she thinks the straining for this song may have done it. Which, to me makes it even more eerie.

She recorded her own version of the song the year after the Rolling Stones version was recorded. Merry's version was released as a single and on an album which was also called Gimme Shelter.

Merry Clayton sang the backup; she is an amazing gospel singer and she tore this song up!

Merry Clayton's background vocal in this is epic.

A "good tune"? Shit, guy, this is a classic. Made more famous by the back up singer where her voice cracks and left in the mix - which makes it that much more special. Not all songs are equal - and this is one of the pantheons.

I just watched the Netflix documentary about backup singers of this era ("20 Feet from Stardom"). This song and Merry Clayton are a part of it. It's a real eye opener about who actually sang what.

Oh my friend - I’m so glad you enjoyed this. One of the most sacred songs of my (Boomer) life. Still play it in my car on CD when I’m lonely; still sing it occasionally in our band of elderly stoners.

This should be the song of 2020. I think we all need shelter from all of the bullshit that has come our way.

This is my favorite Stones song. It’s perfect. Everything is right where it should be; nothing out of place.

Saw Merry Clayon perform with the Stones sometime in the 90's. Flew from Chicago to New York for the show. When they started singing Gimme Shelter, the Stones put a spotlight on her and just let her whale and have the show. It was awesome to say the least.

that fabulous female vocalist is Merry Clayton, they got her up in the middle of the night to sing it, she had curlers in her hair :)

So so so many great songs in their catalog. "Can't you Hear Me Knockin'" should be next.

I'm glad people are discovering the Rolling Stones for the first time. Hard to believe they're STILL going since forming in 1962! Vocalist Mick Jagger & guitarist Keith Richards are the main songwriters. My other Stones recommendations would be Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Sympathy for the Devil, Angie & Slave.

The Rolling Stones is one of the most influential bands in Rock and Roll.

Epic song. Still relevant. Merry Clayton’s vocals take it to the stratosphere.

A beautiful haunting song, that actually makes you high without chemicals.

The backup singer said in an interview that she got a call around midnight to come to the studio to do these vocals. She’d never worked with The Stones before and she was 8 months pregnant, but she ent over and did this. They even put takes where her voice cracked on the single. Best decision she ever made, getting out of bed that night!

50 years old and still such a Strong Song. Haunting. Scary Lyrics. Merry Clayton is singing on this track. Look on KZread on the story behind the song considering her vocal part

@Dahoss The leader of the Rolling Stones was Ian Stewart. It was his band. Ask any of the Stones and they'll tell you that. When brian got the group together Ian Stewart was responsible for alot of that but since he didn't have "the look" he was pushed out of the picture and would play piano etc. They got their name from the Muddy Waters song "Rollin' Stone" which was a record laying beside the phone when Brian happened to call a club in London to try and get them a spot to play. The guy asked "what's the group's name?" They didn't have one but Brian didn't want to sound stupid so he just looked down and saw the Muddy Waters album laying there and looked at the track listing on it and said "The Rolling Stones". The rest is history.

Just seen these guy perform this Aug 14th of this year in Seattle. They are all in there mid 70s now, you'd never know. It was my 4th time hearing Gimme Shelter live and it was still fire...as good as the first time! Legends!

One if not the greatest backing track EVER. Merry Clayton's vocals were LIT.

My mother saw the Rolling Stones at an old music hall in a small British town in the early 60s. All these big iconic bands of the era started off playing gigs in working men's clubs and pubs and touring in small vans for years. Many did that while also working full time jobs. Post War Britain produced some of the greatest art.

OMG. This is one of my favorites of the Stones. It has such a heavy message but it all goes together.

I was 14, when this song was released. I've probably heard it over the radio a few hundred times since.....but never really paid attention to the lyrics, until seeing THIS video a few months ago. Excellent graphics. After seeing the lyrics, I went & searched a couple of 'live' versions of them performing it in concert. I can't recall that female singer's name, but she's legendary.

The Rolling Stones , your looking at almost 60yrs of great music, Sympathy For The Devil, Can’t Always Get What You Want, StratyCat Blues, Wild Horses , Gimme All Your Lovin, man I could go on all night with this their catalog is so long, but on most studio version with lyrics would be best option in my opinion......hard to go wrong with the Stones !

What a time of great music. All were truly great artists. Preformed, written, arranged by just a bunch of dang kids. Stones, Beatles,Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, the kinks, etc. not to mention the great groups from the U.S. You get it dude.

Miss Mary Clayton. Don't know if you heard Mick in the background when her voice went out but that was him. She was pregnant when she did the recording - hair up in curlers and ready for bed. She got the call to do the singing and gave so much that she had a miscarriage. Then a few years ago was in an accident and lost both of her legs. If I ever meet her I'm giving her the biggest hug she's ever had ♥️ she needs one

Tumbling Dice is my favorite Stones song; it's got a more bluesy feel to it, but it has the same kind of "flows so well you're surprised it's over" feeling.

I remember the Draft. Boys 18 and older getting a number and then seeing if there number was picked to go to Vietnam. Every week the guys would get scared that they'd be chosen to go to a shameful war! Very electric and riots in the streets to end the war, but it didn't end until 1975.

You scared me for a minute there! I thought you had found a RS song I hadn't heard. Luckily, I just didn't recognize the title. I still have the first album by them I purchased when I was 13, 'Sticky Fingers' when it first came out.

You need to watch this song's video of the US military going through hell in Vietnam -- that's so important to the meaning of this song.
