Another great video, Andrew. Regarding RCA Studios, they NEVER produced a great sound from anyone. Chess Studios, on the other hand, gave them a great sound which was recorded and mixed in true stereo. The mono mixes of the tracks recorded there were mere folddowns but quality ones. Hope you make some more Stones-centric (as well as Who, Kinks, Moodies, Hollies and Floyd-related) videos soon. They, like the Hollies video, are a great companion to The Beatles-centric videos.

There were really only a few basic label typefaces that record companies were using in the 60s. There's so much attention to detail to replicate the sleeves and the label backgrounds on these reissues that I can't believe that they couldn't create digital versions of those typefaces instead of just saying "meh" and picking something that looks vaguely similar.

I've got the 1989 vinyl 4 album set entitled "singles collection, the London years." It contains 58 songs including US and UK b-sides. It also contains a 70 page full size booklet with lots of photos, song lyrics, recording session info, etc. It covers recordings from 1963 to 1970, although a few songs were released a little later. I have long since digitized the albums, but still have the originals in perfect condition.

Great review! I managed to get this box set for $50 due to a slightly damaged box corner; the discs are mint though. I did find it cheap from ABKCO for not including "Paint It, Black", "Mother's Little Helper" and "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?" as they were all released in 1966, though they of course will appear on the upcoming box.

Wonderful! Another well done, examined and informative vid! Now, what i have are the (again forgive me) the 2004-3 cd singles box sets and the original 1989 black and white 12" US cd singles box set. To compare, was a night and day audio experience. I also i felt, that in most cases, in the 3 cd box UK series there seemed to be completely new remixes of tunes but audio was brilliant... where some sounds were omitted and other sounds boosted [as with the later LP catalogue versions released] by ABKCO. I really loved the clean up work they did (which you mentioned). I think you'll love the next two boxes because, to me, it just got better as recording techniques got better. BTW, the cd box sets are also "lift top" sets. Great show and thanks for sharing

I received this yesterday, couldn’t listen everything yet but all looks amazing. Also ordered The Beatles box after watching your very convincing video, thank you! I can’t wait to receive. I could find them on domestic stores in relatively good prices. The boxes are both very reasonable to have, compared to the time and effort it requires to find all 45s separately and they are more appealing especially for the ones like me who are overwhelmed by the old dusty vinyls with worn covers. I also looked up which other artist have something like this and couldn't find much results except Status Quo and Amy Winehouse. I would have a hearth attack if Madonna had a box like this lol.

Fascinating as always Andrew! I am a fan of both vinyl and hi-res audio downloads. I’d be curious to see a comparison of the sound of these records, and the originals with the 24-bit versions of the same songs available in “the singles collection” on sites such as HD Tracks. A small point because I’m sure this name will pop up again: I saw Bob Ludwig on a panel discussion about a reissue at the SXSW Festival some years back. The first syllable of his name sounds like the first syllable of Luddite, not lewd. Ringo’s drums, made in my home town, are the same. I got a tour of the factory once!

Great video Andrew! Was thinking about getting this set, but I’m definitely going to hold off and save for the ‘67-71 box. Would love to see a video of the many compilations made by DECCA/ABKCO in the 70s to sabotage the new albums the Stones were making after they started their label and had them distributed by Atlantic. Seems like every day I find a new DECCAStones compilation from the 70s, which gives me wonders of how bad the condition of their master tapes are.

I have a couple of these Rolling Stones 45 in my collection. I hope 1967-70 boxed set will be coming up next year which will include “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, “Ruby Tuesday”, “Let’s Spend the Night Together” (aka ‘Let’s Spend Some Time Together”), “Honky Tonk Woman” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. The two labels were UK Decca and London in the US. Decca was a US label at the time with such names as Bing Crosby, Andrews Sisters, Guy Lombardo, Helen Forrest, Dick Haymes, Ink Spots, Mills Brothers and lots more, but to avoid confusion with the UK Decca, they formed London in the late 1940’s with many artists including Mantovani, known for his classical music and mood music, Lonnie Donegan, known for his only hit “Rock Island Line” in 1956, and the Tornados with their only instrumental hit “Telstar” in 1962 and it was the birth of the psychedelic craze.

Great coverage of a great topic . With respect to mono singles pressed before the 70’s…Just a couple of comments I play the original 45´s with a 0.0011 inch stylus in an attempt to closer match the groove width. The sound improvement is astounding. Also, the U.S originals do sound incredible provided they are in near to mint condition. Most of these pressings are on styrene not vinyl. Styrene seems to be much less durable than vinyl and sound quality is not as well preserved.

Wow, definitely over to the dark side now....more Stones please!!! Ok, though I have original Stones (and Beatles) in my collection of 45's. I play them on a BSR autochanger turntable, stacking 6 at a time on the long spindle. I seemed to notice that the records in the new box set don't have the ridges after the run out groove around the labels that the originals have, therefore you can't play them on a stacking record deck. I won't be buying the new box set simply because of that. I like to put 6 1960's singles on the turntable and dance around the living room to them reliving my youth! As you can see, I'm a big Stones fan (Sticky Fingers tee shirt an' all). First love was the Beatles, but more Stones, or Yardbirds, or Kinks, or Who please. Great videos.

En 1989 apareció una caja de tres CD editada por Abkco llamada "The Singles Collection - The London Years".

I recently bought the book 'The Rolling Stones Complete Recording Sessions' by Martin Elliott which I have almost finished reading so was aware that the Stones recorded their classic mid sixties singles in different studios in the USA. As someone who grew up with these singles in the US it just seems a little off. They even could have included a special adapter in the box. Just my opinion. It looks great though!

Nice video. Thanks. Did you do a similar video on the Rolling Stones in Mono LP box set? I would be interested in getting your thoughts on a LP to LP comparison. I know Michael Fremer posted a review that included a recording A/B comparison from one of his classic original pressings and the new LP made from his super high-end turntables and amplifiers. To my ears, the old original LP sounded infinitely better. I would be interested in getting your take.

What’s with the super fine grooves? That Beatles singles collection looked similar. Do they sound quiet in comparison to the originals? You would think that if they’re mimicking the mastering of the original, they’d also want to mimic the cut. Nice mono trick with the cable. Stereo crackle on a mono disc is nasty!

Andrew, An intersting video as always. just by way of bit of insight on the Kinks and ABKCO. this agreement was for the bands US catalogue. The Kinks resigned with Pye in '66 in the UK. The reason why Kinks touring came intermittant from '67 > '69 was nothing to do with ABKCO, it was more to do with thier terrible repuation with promoters of being unreliable and very hard to deal with and thier work ethic was way below that of thier peers. For instance if the band did not fancy a gig they had rolling programme who got the sick note. Eventually promoters got fed up with them and would not book them. The sitaution became so severe in '68 that were foroced to take a number of caberet gigs in in the North East. Its way more complicated than that, but thats it in a nutshell.

Oh! I forgot to add the Kinks were banned from touring the US from '65 > '69 and thier signing to ABKCO in '66 had no bearing on thier lack of touring activities there. .

@@Parlogram The Kinks became legendary for no shows or tipping very late for Saturday gigs, because they had been watching football at Highbury in the afternoon. Also thier royalties were tied in escrow until the late '60s which prompted Ray to write the Kinks Part 1: Lola v Powerman and the Moneygoround. Which in the song The Moneygoround Ray named names. Klein to be fair did largely sort that out for them. But that has left the legacy that the US '66 >'71 catalogue has been effectively been frozen in time, like the Stones. The same does not apply the UK and European markets where Ray and BMG/Sony can release what and when they want with fear of ABKCO stepping in.

It's a nice box, but I wish they'd paid more attention to detail in replicating the originals rather than this half arsed effort. I don't know if MPO do it, I don't think they do, but it is still possible to replicate the four prong push out centres and have glossy flipback sleeves on the EPs. A couple of Motown EPs boxes did it very well a few years ago. They look close to mint UK originals. They could have at least got the orange colour right and also not have included stuff like the Abkco website address in the label text. That's a terrible touch! I'm sure it's nice box, but it is expensive and aimed at collectors who would appreciate this kind of effort over the half vintage, half modern kind of look they have here. Great video as always Andrew. 👍

@8:20 - those fold marks are a result of modern digital printing issues.. it floats on the surface of the paper - does not interact like older printing methods.. so you get creases immediatly as it's 'superficial' image and the inks used don't sublimate so it becomes brittle - one of the many problems of modern printing method..which isn't really printing in the traditional idea.

OF-THE-WORLD yeah i was further clarifying. I do digital printing for a living. Which are overgrown laser printers for the most part, except for the hp indigo which is a bit different You would be shocked how many arguments ive been in trying to explain the difference, or maybe you wouldn’t. And there was me thinking The Beatles' cupboard had been stripped bare. I was wondering about the video game for consoles that came out in 2009. Tracks were uploaded on KZread and I thought some sounded better than the remasters. The Dreamscape ones were uploaded and If I Needed Someone (Mono) was the first time I could appreciate the mono mix. Years later had a look and they had gone or had the sound doctored. Hey Bulldog was the only one remaining with decent sound, but that has now gone. There has been recent uploads, but the sound quality isn't there. Sorry for the hijacking. Rodger Daltry not a fan (Stones), by the way. "Mediocre pub band." !!! P.S. Nearly forgot to say another high quality, entertaining & informative video. You do spoil us y'know, Andrew.

Sshhh. Don't be debunking the "audiophile" lie that these 45 box sets aren't as good as the originals. I was able to score a leftover Beatles set at a steep discount. Newbies in the US aren't aware of how crappy 45s sounded back in the day on the cheap plastic they were pressed on. Thanks for the info on the availability of inner sleeves

  • @plan7a
    @plan7a2 жыл бұрын

A few niggles: The sleeves are also not as authentic as they could be I notice, not only are the colours wrong but they made one some big omissions (just as they did with the Decca labels). No 'Made in' at the bottom or white box at the top. And, apart from the fact they are cardboard the big mistake is... the opening! It's at the side as opposed to the top! To keep with the authenticity these mistakes - as Brent Hooton so rightly says about the typeface - should have been addressed surely. The other thing that I notice is the middles - the American records (for one) should be the big hole variety... The UK ones should have been the 'pronged' sort, as can be seen on the originals. Even if it isn't possible to keep these as original as possible it is possible to recreate the look of the 'prongs' as it is done with CD printing when recreating the look of a vinyl record. The poster being so creased is a bit of a shame and the book - while it looks nice I feel it's a shame that a few of the pages had middle spreads, with a bit of repositioning these could have been avoided and would make the book a bit better. I'm sure this would have been better than some cut-off images which you'd have to bend the booklet a bit to see them properly. Keeping a clear middle and putting the images either side would have been easy and better, I feel. But this is just my feelings on the matter. Regarding the sound quality I did notice the remaster copyright dates are 2016 which would mean that any further improvements could have been addressed in the six years which have passed since then. This might only apply to some of the tracks, however. Just some thoughts on this set. I cannot fault your video, however, so thank you - as always - for making it and reviewing the set.
