Have you ever noticed that actors in film and TV look better than your average person? That’s thanks to makeup. How about when a character looks sick? That’s also makeup. Or when a character has been punched and their nose is bleeding? Makeup again. The hair and makeup departments in film are vital to creating movie magic. We sit down with makeup artist Desiree Falcon to learn all about what it’s like to do her kind of work.

First, we walk through Falcon’s background. She tells us how she got to where she is today. Like many makeup artists, she didn’t know she would end up on film sets. It all started with a love of makeup. Falcon then discusses why she was able to climb the ranks as a makeup artist, and how others may be able to do the same.

We then dive into the details with Falcon, and she gives us behind-the-scenes information on how makeup artists work. It’s a lot more than slathering lipstick on an actor. Makeup artists have to collaborate with directors in the pre-production process, coming up with ideas for characters that do the story justice. Then, once they’re on set, they have to make sure makeup stays the same from shot to shot.
Without makeup artists, films would look a lot worse. It’s a department many people forget about, but it’s pivotal to the movie industry as we know it.
