The Rock's Body ISN'T Always REAL! - Black Adam's VFX Breakdown

With a physique as impressive as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's, you wouldn't think that it'd be problematical, but, oddly enough, DJ's body was the biggest problem the vfx teams on Black Adam had to overcome.
For some scenes, they actually had to slim his body down, yeah. And for others, they had to bulk it up, in fact, if you consider scenes where he had to be 100% CGI like the aerial fight scenes...

Others that required extensive digital painting or augmentation over his body...
Others that had to be done by a stuntman...
And others that had to transition from the real DJ to his Digidouble.
Throughout a lot of the movie, The Rock's "totally unreal" body, was precisely that...
Totally Unreal.
Oddly enough, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's impressive physique was actually one of the biggest problems the vfx teams on Black Adam had to overcome.
You see, having such a perfect body doesn't actually mean it's going to look perfect in every shot and there are actually many reasons why this is the case .
For example, just because of the way that some scenes were put together meant they had to modify parts of his body in order for him to look right; in some scenes, they had to slim his body down, for others, they actually had to bulk it up, and so actually, as you'll find out in this video, what you may not have noticed throughout a lot of this movie, is that parts of The Rock's "totally unreal" body, were precisely that...
Totally Unreal.
-Building Up The Rock
When it comes to superhero movies, vfx teams can normally foresee the type of VFX shots that they'll have to do.
There'll be digital environments to design and create, and futuristic vehicles to invent
There'll be CG buildings, and establishing shots
There'll be full CG shots, and digital backgrounds
and there'll be simulations and augmentations
But for Black Adam, in addition to all of this (and the mandatory "Running On A Treadmill" shot) the VFX teams knew that a large number of shots would require CGI versions of the villains and superheroes, and to create these assets they would need 3D scans of all the actors.
Fortunately, Weta Digital already had a high-fidelity digital Dwayne Johnson asset which they had created and used back in 2016 for the movie Central Intelligence...
And then used again in Jumanji...
And again in 2018 for the movie Rampage...
And in Jumanji: Next level, and again in Jungle Cruise.
Unfortunately, Dwayne's physique fluctuates quite a bit.
For Black Adam, he trained so hard that he lost most of his body fat so for principal photography that ran from April till July 2021 he was extremely lean.
But, when the reshoots came around in 2022, Digital Domain realized that his physique during principal photography wasn't the same as it was when WETA had originally scanned him for their asset, so they had to get a new 3D scan of the leaner Dwayne and then retopologize their CG asset to the leaner version of him.
Virtual Mass
Dwayne's weight change wasn't the only problem the visual effects teams had in relation to weight, in fact, the illusion of weight and mass is one of the hardest and most important things to achieve with a visual effect, and (if unsuccessful) one of the biggest giveaways that what you are seeing is an effect.
Take this scene in Die Another Day for example, even though you can clearly see the difference between the live-action footage and the CGI what actually breaks the effect is the lack of weight when Pierce lands on the wave.
You can see it even clearer in the 1997 film Air Force One, here the Air Force One asset is actually surprisingly realistic and the way the aircraft breaks apart is pretty convincing, but the lack of camera movement, impact forces, water splashes, debris, and the overall sound design all add to the feeling that the plane weighs less than a real plane does and therefore, cannot be real.
In Black Adam, the VFX teams also had this problem of selling "weight" but in addition, they also had to sell "strength".
Black Adam had to appear so powerful that to him everything was lightweight.

What they accomplished ? Black Adam was absolute garbage with low quality CGI just like rest of marvel/dc movies, King Kong from 2005 has better CGI then those trash movies for manchildren

@@arcanewondersfann1567 You do realize majority of the big CGI in movies are done by the same company right? Weta Digital, the same company that made the CGI in King Kong 2005 that you're praising made Black Adam's CGI that you're trashing lol They also did Endgame's and both Avatar's and many others.. The reason some movies have such bad CGI is because of the deadlines, big companies give VFX Studios so little time to make so many VFX shots that some artists even said that they have to work on multiple projects at the same time.. You don't have to like it, but you should at least respect the work they do, even if it's not their best, because they sure are not the culprit nor the problem.

@@arcanewondersfann1567 What I meant by same company is that the average person would expect the same quality CGI from both films, and while it's not always the same people that do the VFX (and sometimes are), VFX companies always hire very skilled artists, Weta Digital is not putting a newbie to do 20 VFX shots in 3 weeks.. Like I said, the problem with CGI in these recent years is that VFX artists are getting overworked and underpaid while having terrible deadlines to meet. Look at She-Hulk..

I think the problem in this movie was showcasing Black Adam as an Anti-Hero whereas he should've be the villain but he didn't want to be a villain. And although he was the most shredded and they were all real muscles I felt something odd in his suit and look in that physique. Its a shame that long awaited character portrayed by Johnson finally appeared in a big picture but couldn't win.

Whoever is reading this, I wanted to say I hope you have a great day and that God loves you so much that He sent His son, Jesus, to die on a cross for your sins and He rose again from the dead three days later. God Bless! And also, He doesn't want you to go to Hell, but He wants you to go to Heaven with Him but you have to be Saved. How do I get Saved you might ask? Here are the steps below on how to get Saved! 1. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you! 2. Believe that God sent His Son (Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later. 3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for Him to be your Lord and Savior forever. 4. Build a Personal Relationship with Jesus by Praying and Reading the Bible daily and Live for Him Forever. I'm Praying for you and you are loved! (Romans 10:9-13)

What I really dislike about VFX artist's and general fight scene choreography artist's work is that in the finished result you're left with scenes like where the guy bent the baton over Black Adam's head.. I get it, you're trying to stress how strong he is. But does that mean the person swinging the baton is strong enough that he could swing it with so much strength that it would bend? Wouldn't it just bounce before it bent? Idk if they're just not taking this into account at all or they think the viewer is not taking that into account..

Great video. This enhanced my enjoyment of the movie. It was a fun and entertaining film, too bad WBD decided to go in a different direction. It’s weird how fans got only one standalone Superman movie and only one Dwayne Johnson Black Adam movie even though him and Henry Cavill wanted to work together but WBD decided to create 3 Harley Quinn movies and 2 Shazam movies. That’s just idiotic when you take a moment and think about it.

maybe no this time. But the rocks muscles where gained by steriod. He had gyno, and he exceeded the natural limit of muscle growth (wich is 1kg per month). if you gain more actual muscle then that (not just weight) in a month then it is clearly steriod. Do you think hugh jackman is natural. (why do you think pattison was not massive as Batman) He clearly refused to use roids. there are also actors that are not huge, but still take steriods (so muscel size does not say anything). Only the timeframe i wich you gained it. another sign of roids if people seem to put on mass fast without gaining visible fat.
