The Roches - Mr. Sellack 1980
O Mr Sellack
Can I have my job back?
I've run out of money again.
Last time I saw ya
I was singing Hallelujah
I'm so glad to be leavin' this restaurant.
Now the only thing I want
Is to have my old job back again.
I'll clean the tables;
I'll do the creams;
I'll get down on my knees and scrub
behind the steam table.
O Mr. Sellack
I didn't think I'd be back.
I worked here last year
Remember?
I came when Annie
Was going on vacation
And I stayed on almost till December.
Now the only thing I want
Is to have my old job back again.
I won't be nasty to customers no more.
When they send their burger back I'll tell them that
I'm sorry.
Waiting tables ain't that bad.
Since I've seen you last, I've waited
for some things that you would not believe
To come true.
Give me a broom and I'll sweep my way to heaven.
Give me a job;
You name it.
Let the other forty-million three-hundred and seven
People who want to get famous.
Now the only thing I want
Is to have that old job back again.
I'll clean the tables;
I'll do the creams;
I'll get down on my knees and scrub
behind the steam table.

Sublime authors, musicians, singers. The Roches are still wildly underappreciated, but it's good to see so many people loving their music in 2023
Guitar tour de force by Terre. This album had more great songs than many groups have in a career. I’d say they were under-appreciated but those of us who love them love them enough to make up for it, I hope.

Yeah, great record top to bottom. I think it was the first one with Suzzy as a full member.

The more I listen to them, the more impressed I am by the details of Terre's playing, particularly on Keep on Doing
Like many of their best songs, this starts out as comic, but then you get to the heartbreaking part of it: "Since I've seen you last, I've waited for some things that you would not believe to come true."
I just sent it to my son who is applying to rerun to his grocery job after a mental health leave.

Jesus Nalts I didn't expect to see you here. Hope all is going as well as it can sir.
Let the other forty-million three-hundred and seven people, who want to, get famous. Genius
They really shook up the staid, smug folkie scene of the seventies with their downtown edge coupled with brilliantly wry songcraft. Robert Fripp was a perfect collaborator, too; I never get sick of this album, which still sounds perfectly current.

Amen to that.
Absolutely the most overlooked and underrated group ever! Thanks for posting!
Two unfulfilled bucket list items: seeing these three perform and marrying one of them. Oh well....
RIP Maggie Roche. Give me a broom and I"ll sweep my way to heaven.
That first album was such a revelation. I wore out at least two copies - one 8-track and one cassette. ❤️
Hard to believe this video is 35 years old. The Roches are still so fresh and funny and smart with sublime harmonies. Go girls. You were way ahead of your time.

Here in 2023. Now it is 43 years old. Wow!!! ❤
It’s amazing how perfectly blended their voices are, even in volume. Just watched the Indigo Girls sing the Hammond Song, another Roches gem, but it only made me appreciate the perfection of the Roches voices more.

indigo Girls don't make me laugh! The roches amazing geniuses so many levels do you think Robert Fripp would ever play with the fucking India go Girl you think Paul Simon would've put Indigo Girls on his album produced their album in the break.
I am so relieved to have found this. It was one of my favorite tapes in the 80's. I thought I'd never find them again. I love their songs.
They sound just as good live as they do in the studio.
Take me back to 1991 oh, for you Stephanie wherever you are in this world now, who walked into art class and declared " doesn't it feel great to quit your job and be free!!".. Only a week later to walk in with a worried look.."man I really need a job.." 😅
The gems of three part harmony over and over and over.
What a freakin’ PERFECT song! So damned specific and so universal at the same time. That’s called POETIC!! ❤💙💜💛💚💖❣️
Every aspect of talent and intellectualism is represented in these three.
I was lucky enough to see the ladies three times back in their heyday. So fun.
the hallelujah absolutely kills me
Such great songwriting. I consider it one of the best albums of the 80s, and still enjoy listening to it occasionally. This live version is strong and true. These German television shows on KZread have been a blessing. A lot of great acts performed live on Rockpalast and Musickladen and we finally get to see and hear them. Thanks, fritz51337! Or should I say, "Danke Schön!"
Love this tune and the Roches!!❤
Super!
this is fucking amazing.
I love the roches. RIP Maggie Roche

i've been a fanboy since their days at Gerties folk city. I listen to them all the time my daughter is 42. Used to go to the bottom line with me to see them all the time in my DNA. God sakes fucking geniuses. No one could put a song together like them. Think of this song they think of? Nobody.
Omg. Yes. Saw them in Northampton...1985. Amazing doubd... got me thru some ypugh times. My 42 yr old daughter still knows the lyrics and sings those songs tday. We do harmony.. ❤
Fabulous! I remember having that album on vinyl back in the 80's, and playing it to death. 💕
THIS IS A GEM.
Suddenly I'm seeing their subtleties. I mean hearing them.
Maggie opted to go without make-up. Love her. R.I.P.
This is what angels sound like.
fashion sense on point
OMg what great memories! and what GREAT songs!
god , they were great
I love this song and this album so much.. It's how I discovered them. I've never seen a live version of this dong, so thank you!!

I wish there was a guitar tutorial for this. I’m pretty decent at guitar and I’d love to learn this song but I can’t tell what they’re playing because my ear isn’t the best with that sort of thing.
The Gap. Yum Yum Yum.
Did you finish your sidework? Yes Mr. D@#$!!!!!!
rip
God, I love their stuff! Unfortunately the one with the deep voice - sorry, but I do not know the name - is gone now.

Were they ever on A Prairie Home Companion? This is the kind of hammy cornball stuff Keillor loved.
Leather Circus??
What's up with the bonnet? That's hilarious!
Singer needs braces. It distracts from them otherwise being both talented and cute.
