Sometimes the trips we never planned to take are the most memorable. I truly believe that things happen for a reason.Your daughters learned so much about patience, making the best of an unfortunate situation, how to not let stress overwhelm you, how to laugh when you want to cry, and handling disappointment in a positive way (ice cream always helps). You guys set a wonderful example of how to achieve your goals ,if things don't work out to try another way. Sending you prayers for a quick and cheap car repair.

The interesting thing is that life events really change the perspective. Prior to the year 2020 I would be very upset about something like that. Travel is very important for us and I do not want it spoilt by force majeure. By after COVID-19, the wars and everything the world went through I would say that the only thing that matters is that you came home safely with the kids. And good for the landlord!

Whenever I plan to drive for a long trip, I always get my car checked by a mechanic before I leave. My dad was a diesel truck mechanic and always cautioned us to remember that it can break down anytime. Also, you were so smart to pack food and drinks. It seems remote where you were compared to the USA where we can get off at the next exit to find a gas station and restaurants. You did the right thing by turning back.

I wonder if it was the mountains. We once drove a four cylinder mini van through the Rocky Mountains and that poor little van struggled! We had to keep stopping at the side of the road like you were. Once we got back down out of the mountains, the van was fine. We obviously never drove that van into the mountains again!

  • @pamelajaye

When we went from Virginia to California by way of Maryland, it was definitely the mountains. But that time specifically it was the... What's that part of the car that keeps the engine from overheating? Maybe it's the radiator maybe it's not. Anyway we were stuck on the side of the road somewhere in Maryland in the mountains in the dark probably on a two-Lane Road, praying. And this guy drove by and he said "can I help you and we said we need water and the guy said you know I never carry water in my car but before I left my house something told me to put a bottle of water in the car. And then he gave it to us." So we were able to proceed a little further, before we spent the night sleeping in the car parked in a gas station on a Saturday night. Back in 1980 apparently the fun thing to do on a Saturday night in Cumberland Maryland is drive around the town in a circle. I'm so glad they invented the internet! And also it was cold. And there were six of us in a Cordoba. Cinnamon slept in the back window and Brian slept underneath the car. Don't ask me why. Anyway the gas station was much better than being stuck on the side of the road in the mountains. And the next morning we drove back south through West Virginia on the turnpike which was a two-lane road up in the middle of the air, cars going in two directions, And you paid to drive on this! Sunday night we stopped in Bristol Virginia / Tennessee and then on Monday morning the car worked perfectly and we drove clear across the country in 2 and 1/2 days and made it to California on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. (forgive me but I still don't like West Virginia) When my husband and I drove to Pennsylvania, we have no idea why the car died. We just had to rent another car for the weekend and then we had to rent a truck to tow our car back home. As soon as the car got home it worked perfectly. We think it was the carburetor because it usually was. We went through four of them before somebody told us why it kept breaking down. I don't think cars have carburetors anymore. Unless they're really old. Driving through Connecticut It was the transmission. Be ever so happy that you never will be able to buy a 1979 Plymouth Horizon. Thankfully we made it home, albeit slowly. I never noticed the Connecticut was hilly. Several years and much money later (and let's not forget the four carburetors) one morning the transmission just gave up. As the car was towed out of our yard by whoever it was that gave us $25 to tow it away forever, I honestly cheered. Oh and then there was the time my friend's car had an oil leak and the engine seized and it was either $1,200 or $1,500 to replace the entire engine. Yeah that was in the '80s. We had a nice long walk down Commonwealth Ave in Newton until we found a payphone because it was before cell phones. And it was a kind of a foggy slightly sprinkly November night - which should have been cold, but it wasn't. And I was thankful that I did not have a car. Glad that you and your friends found a way to get together.

Could be a clogged fuel filter, I used to have a Ford Expedition and that happened to me once. The fuel filter would get clogged up and the engine would bog down and stop, I'd stop the car for awhile, the sediment would settle down and I could start the car again. It first started after driving up some mountains in West Texas/New Mexico. That seemed to trigger the clog to act up. Once I had the fuel filter changed it was fine. Also, you have the best attitude about everything. Always looking at the bright side. I always think maybe God is protecting me from something when plans go awry.

I've been in similar situations when I was younger, had a young family and not much money and it means that some options are not available because of the cost. But the thing to remember is that your family is intact. No-one has been injured or worse and the landlord of your airbnb was more than reasonable so not everything was lost. It is a disappointment though and I can still remember the frustration and let-down of plans going wrong. As you thought things through, some options for your friends did come to light and I think that's the thing. You do need time to think and not to react too quickly or badly as that never solves anything. Best wishes folks! Sorry it was such a rough trip!

After checking transmission and gas lines etc. the trouble ended up being with the gas filter. If you happen to get some not best gasoline it can cause a clog in the filter . After changing the filter we have driven over 60000km without any problems. I hope you find an easy solution too.

You are smart about the foods and sandwiches you take! Beautiful Country, old and cool buildings in city! I would never ever never want to live in a high rise apt, I would fear fire and have phobia, so many neighbors. A transmission is way way expensive I hope it isn't that. O was hoping bad gas, or needed transmission fluid.

Hello Victoria and Tolya; I will look forward to the trip you take to this beautiful place of which you speak... In the meantime it was great to visit with you both and your beautiful little ones... Life happens and it seems there is always a reason (sometime we just need to wait to understand...) Take care Much love Linda in Canada ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That was nice of your Airbnb host to give you a future date to use his Airbnb. My husband and I host Airbnb in our home, here in the United States (Nebraska sandhills), and it is very easy to refund money if a guest can't come. We don't penalize guests who cancel because we don't do Airbnb for the money. All the money we receive we put towards ministry of some sort.... maybe gifting students who are seeking support for a mission trip, or for 2023, we saved up all the money we received for the year and had local youth groups use it to purchase food items for a local crisis pregnancy center's food pantry, where I have been involved for the past 25 years. That was a lot of fun and my husband and I threw them a pizza party afterwards. We may do that from now on as it was a huge success! We charge only $50 a night which usually includes two meals, including a supper the night before as we live way out in the sticks! LOL And to me, Airbnb automatically includes a big breakfast and we typically let guests choose beforehand what they like. We have a huge yard and will provide free meals for guests who come to camp in the yard, or who sleep in their cars as well. We only charge $40 for outdoor camping but provide a very nice porta potty, for which I have received many compliments from guests who claim "That is the cleanest porta potty I have seen in my life!" LOL My biggest enjoyment.... Just getting to meet people from all over the world, taking them out to one or two of our pastures to hand feed our numerous tame cows and sharing our life on the ranch with them... and even better, keeping in touch with former guests from Belgium, France, Israel, etc., some of which I have continued to email for over 7 years! Just like part of our family.🙂

You did the right thing to return home. You could rent a car if you still want to drive to Armenia. I played with LEGO when I was a kid in the 1960s. Back then, they didn't come in kits, but rather just random blocks you had to use your imagination to make something.

Well done for getting through your problems with a happy mind. When we have problems and get unhappy this adds to our problem.,It’s good that the girls are to young to understand disappointment. Two little girls crying would make the day worse

7.58 maybe he was praying? I had a few times in my life God protected me going somewhere and i had to make other plans (His plan). I don't know this was also something like i that. Maybe it was just bad luck with the car... . Thankfully you got home safe. Bless you all from the Netherlands.
