The Rise of Thrifting | 2019

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi friends! Have you noticed how thrift culture has become extremely popular in the past decade? I started looking at the history of popular thrift stores (mostly Goodwill & Salvation Army) and found that thrifting has been popular in past decades, too! I included some vintage photos from thrift stores in this video, and I hope you enjoy learning about the thrift culture in America as much as I did!

Interesting story ! I Am 62 years old and have been thrifting most of my life and my daughter is 40 years old and is also a big thrifter ! My home has a lot of thrifted items ! I love the hunt of good quality items at a very reasonable price ! It use to be associated with being poor but not any more ! The quality and affordability of clothing is so much better at the thrift stores ! Thanks for the history of thrifting !

Great video! I started thrifting in the 80's when the movie Pretty in Pink came out with Molly Ringwald. It definitely was frowned upon among most high schoolers back then... The vibe was"bigger & better". But not for me! I loved old stuff & bright 60s clothing. I still love the hunt & thrift everywhere I can, even Ireland 💞

I can't tell you the last time I bought clothes retail. I just found a brand new juicer at a yard sale for $8.00. 25 years ago I moved out of state with just what I could fit in my car and completely furnished my new apartment with thrift store and yard sale items. When I moved back where I am now, I sold almost everything . Where we live now there are yard sales all year and my husband goes just about every weekend. He thinks the thrift stores are too pricey. Thank you for another interesting video.

After watching your video, I went to Netflix and watched the documentary The True Cost. I've just finished watching it and I am appalled! It was truly powerful and eye opening. Thank you for mentioning this.

Fabulous lesson - good research on Sally's and Goodwill. I remember my mother taking me shopping at a Goodwill in Minneapolis in the early 1950s. I remember the corsets and dressing tables, flowered slipper chairs, and long white gloves. (from Grandma Bunny in Phoenix).

This is actually a good topic for my classroom. I teach business and supply chain at a small college and we talk a lot about changes in the USA when it comes to fashion, unions, and the change in where things are produced and why. I think I’ll introduce this one day. Thanks Leah!

I used to teach and was thinking something similar would have been amazing to bring up in discussion in a classroom. If you haven't seen The True Cost on Netflix, that may also be a great aspect of the conversation! Thank you for watching- Have a great day!

Nice history lesson Leah. I have loved thrifting since I was a kid. I can remember going "bummin'" with my Grandma at the garage sales and St. Vinny De Paul's thrift stores in Wisconsin. Then my mom ran the thrift store at the military base we lived on when I was in Middle school and I would work there with her. I love the recycling aspect of it, the uniqueness of what you can find compared to what everyone else was wearing and the thrill of the hunt and anticipation of what you might find.

Yes! There are always gems to find! How wonderful that you were able to work with your mom at a thrift store on base! I'm sure you must have a lot of memories from that time. :)

Great video. I started thrifting over 25 years ago as a way to stretch my dollars, but I always loved it. I have found some great items at thrift stores. It can definitely become an addiction and I think it is the thrill of the hunt for most people. Thanks so much for sharing this video!

You might also be interested in some mini documentaries on You Tube about how a lot of thrift stores sell unsold clothing to vendors that recycle textiles in India and that process, as well as to other third world countries especially Africa. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa in the early 1990's and there were people who sold used clothing from America at markets as their livelihood. Ships would dock in port and giant pallet size bundles of used clothes would be sold off to people who then sold them at market. Giant piles of clothes villagers would sift thru and buy from.

You just sparked a great interest! I would love to find some information on that topic. I would love to see one of these markets. I'm happy to hear that the unsold clothes still get used! I have always wondered. Have a great day, and thank you for the recommendation!

Wow so cool that you were in the Peace Corps!! I would love to volunteer with them! You've just reminded me that I've seen this popular trend in The Dominican Republic too. They call it "Ropa de Paca", translating to Clothes from Containers because they come shipped in containers. It helps a lot of people by creating jobs and providing cheaper merchandise for low and middle classes.

This was absolutely fascinating Leah! I also wonder if the 2008 recession contributed to the rise in thrifting, much like the Great Depression did in the 1930s. Also, I loved the sisterhood of the traveling pants movie so much when it first came out. 😊 Thank you for taking the time to make this video!

Thank you, Emily! The recession in 2008 is a great point that I should have included! I know many families probably cut their clothing budget due to necessity and found that thrift stores were a great option for the adjusted budget!

Awesome video Leah! I've read a lot about how Disposable Fashion- the cheap fashion we're buying in the US- is contributing to our already suffering planet. Although my family has always thrifted for house items, I started buying clothing about 10 years ago. What sparked it for me was seeing how the fashion was all the same throughout the stores. I wanted to be different. Fashion for me is not wearing what everyone is wearing, so to add unique pieces I turned to my local thrift stores. Now with Poshmark, I also look for items that have a reselling value (My closet: @NicoleCXA). Thank you so much for the great content! Keep it up!

Thank you, Nicole! I feel the same about the beautiful, I unique pieces at a thrift store. I have grown up thrifting, and I don't think I'll ever change! I haven't found many home good items, but I am going to start looking more to see what I can find!I did find a beautiful cast iron skillet last week for $4!

Omg Leah!! I love this video!! You did a great job putting it together. Some off it I don’t even know. For me growing up my grandma always talked about thrifting, however I didn’t go until I was in high school. In the mid 90s the whole grunge thing was very popular and that’s where you would get your clothes. I didn’t go again until around 2008 when everything went downhill and the market took a dive. My husband is in the financial business so money was very tight and I had an elementary son that kept putting holes in his jeans so I started going to Goodwill to get cheap jeans and I was hooked! I’ve been going ever since. FYI I did change my closet name, now it is @buttonandzip Thanks again! I hope you’re having a great week! Looking forward to next video as always

I grew up thrifting and went often in high school with my friends. I was hooked early! Thank you for the closet name update! Have a great day!

I saw a pair of boots at Salvation Army for $80. The whole time I shopped I kept hearing “are they crazy?” And “80 dollars?!?” It was pretty funny but it’s insane some of the prices.
