I dated this girl briefly who told me the reason why I went through the trauma in my past was because I was paying the consequences of something I did in a past life. As a spiritual person myself, I told her what she said was hurtful and you don’t go up to a child going through something and think “yeah, that’s too bad, they probably sucked in a past life” especially because there’s no given proof of that. Spirituality is great when you have a healthy relationship with it and you apply boundaries, but when you go out of your way to have a sense of righteousness you do more harm than good. Needless to say, I dumped her bc of the amount of gal on her end.

Yes absolutely! Thats also what I always think of when ppl say this “everything happens for a reason” stuff! I mean fine I guess if it works for u but as she said in the video, it’s just a way of avoiding to deal with "negative" emotions. Please stop going around telling people this who actually do experience negative feelings or have trauma and are not delusional! It is not going to help or consolidate them. It’s actually extremely cruel to put it on them to find out why this very upsetting thing actually had to happen to them and was somehow doing them good in the end. Kinda similar to the “well it made u stronger/who u are now” response I’ve gotten myself not even from spiritual people. Exactly the line between that and psychosis. I’m not bipolar but I’ve been through it. I think my personality and being a dreamer plays into part. I want to believe. But due to my experience. I had to avoid spirituality. Talking about it or seeing anything related to it gave me panic attacks. I’m better now. I’ve had to learn to actively detach myself from it. I still love spirituality. It’s played a big part in my growth as a person. But it’s hard trying to detach knowing deep down you can feel your brain wanting to latch onto it but I know it wouldn’t be good for me.

Great video. When I was going through a major breakup in 2020 I became addicted to watching tarot card readings because I was so broken down emotionally and heartbroken, so I just wanted answers and it made me become delusional. Somehow the delusion helped me as I was going through the pain and processing the trauma but as I healed myself I realized how a lot of these readers keep you locked in with false hope and can have a real influence on your mindset, it can become very dangerous and can take you away from your own inner knowing and intuition. I no longer consume this content and I am better off for it and have a stronger intuition and relationship with myself because of it. Just my experience!

Obsessed and delusional. Especially for the love readings. And reading the comments on the videos now make me so sad and honestly cringe. It’s not their fault and I’m sure they’re going through things that make them desperate for answers. Something I hate SO much is when it’s a love reading and the title is like “HIGHLY ACCURATE love reading” and it’s like ?? How though?? 😅 how do you know that’s accurate? EVERYONE’S life and scenarios could fit into either of the 4 decks? Come on! Life is too complicated for that. And then they keep themselves safe with “it’s a general reading so not everything will fit”. And then it is SO sad and confusing to me to see people commenting “omg this was so accurate!” Was it?? How do you know? How can you tell? How do you know the feelings and thoughts of someone who you’re seeking answers about and for? It’s not accuracy you’re experiencing, it’s delusion 😩 and I know it is, cause it used to be me too 😞

I experienced spiritual psychosis which was actual psychosis induced by heavy weed smoking. You hit the nail on the head with differentiating bw spiritual experiences that bring joy vs distress. I was very much in distress and seeking a way out. I became obsessed with angel numbers and "signs" like seeing different color feathers on the ground and thinking they were direct messages from God. But it was extremely distressing because I didn't know what the "sign" was supposed to indicate. The more I got into the new age woo woo stuff the more distress I felt, which only fueled the drug use. A vicious cycle. I only healed the psychosis once I got sober and now I have a much healthier mode of spirituality that is actually grounding and grounded in reality!!!

I am so glad you mentioned spiritual bypass. I just finished my master’s degree in mental health counseling and did my internship at a rehab for substance use disorders where I got to work with clients in a group and individual setting. Spiritual bypass ended up becoming a big problem towards the end of my time there because everyone got so focused on God being the solution to all of their problems that they didn’t feel they needed to work on anything in counseling despite most of them having severe childhood trauma and other mental health conditions. I’m not religious but I used to be a hardcore christian so I knew what the spiritual high was like. It was so frustrating and also sad at the same time because I knew their spiritual high was probably going to wear off after they left the facility and would be alone with those unresolved psychological wounds.

This is why I have such a serious issue w 12 step programmes. They were started by religious people, with God in mind as the cure. I think step 2 or 3 is basically that you *have* to admit and believe in a higher power. A lot of rehabs are ran in line with churches, or church community groups. There's a religious link somewhere almost always. Im a former psych student, also struggled with substances as much as I learned about substance abuse and addiction, so I got to see it from both POVs. I personally struggle with the same ideas as you do. When a rehab program or a therapeutic program involves religion, god, spirituality, those things often serve as a sticking plaster or a catalyst to worse health/mental health for the patient down the line. Im not saying that we should discourage any patients from having their own spiritual beliefs, it's well acknowledged that human beings tend to need a sense of 'greater than' in order to feel their best, I understand that, but we should not be enforcing or suggesting beliefs to vulnerable people. I don't have the experience that you have, I'm probably not using the right language etc but it's something I care about a lot, as I also grew up Christian, so witnessed some really unethical sh*t regarding the treatment of people w addiction issues or mental health issues. Even people who had the best intentions could be so harmful. Im agnostic now. I don't adhere to any religion. I don't engage in any specific spiritual practices. I believe there's a chance there's something, but I think that most organised religions or new age spiritual practices either are cults or are one small step away from being cults.

I used to be a hardcore Christian and I was so deep in it that I didn’t realize how much of a negative effect it was having on me. I was constantly paranoid and anxious that I was going to hell and I would analyze every single action every day so I could ask for forgiveness so I didn’t go to hell. I would have breakdowns because I never heard God speak to me but other Christians I was around would say that he spoke to them. I thought something was wrong with me or that I was evil or doomed or that God was mad at me. The worst was that I was always scared if I did something bad, watched something bad, or listened to something bad that I would be opening myself up to demons to possess me and I was so terrified of being possessed it was insane. I completely agree that true spirituality, however one chooses to practice it, should not bring you significant distress! Spirituality should be reassuring, calming, peaceful, etc. Now I can definitely understand that sometimes because of spirituality we may be forced to have to face difficulties in life or inner struggles head on which can be stressful or scary even. But it shouldn’t be sending you in a mental spiral. Needless to say I no longer believe those things but I do still have significant anxiety about going to hell. I don’t quite know what I believe anymore but I do feel grounded by trying to maintain a positive attitude in life, serve others, and just generally be a good person.

He talks about unlearning the trauma of being afraid of Hell. I grew up evangelical, am no longer Christian and this has been incredibly healing to me. Also Bart Erhman is a fantastic educator on biblical misinterpretations and inerrancy. Ty for making this, I think the distinction between psychosis and obsession is valuable and very helpful. Edit at 10:45 YES, anyone of any faith/religion can fall into this, it's not the framework or belief itself, it's how each individual reacts to it. I know in my experience I've had to step back because I began to fall into the "obsession" category due to my own mental health. When I was secluding myself from everyone and feeling hopeless/depressed, having someone (even a random with cards on the internet) tell me everything I was working for was going to happen, and constantly affirming me, it genuinely helped and motivated me on days I needed the push. That being said, eventually I caught myself depending on them/ taking them too seriously. It was actually kind of hard to fully cut them out and not listen to a single one and learn that the deepest spirituality is that no one outside of me needs to affirm me. I can find that all within. However, I totally see how other people can struggle to come to that conclusion and take off the rose colored lenses. I think spirituality is helpful for developing a gratitude for things that come into your life when the time is right and you're ready to receive them, and faith that things like that will happen in the future when youre ready for them. I.e. looking back and realizing what a gift meeting your best friend was and how that time in your life helped you grow/the timing was perfect, and since that happened you can have faith that good things like that will happen in the future when the time is right. It gets worrisome when that mentality turns into an attempt to control the external world, like trying to manifest a specific person into becoming your boyfriend. Healthy spirituality is acceptance of the fact that you don't have control of the universe, and not believing that doing the right things somehow grants you access to a blank check to get the things you want in life. Its worrisome that a lot of internet spirituality has little to do with becoming more at peace and doing less harm in the world.

I used tarot readings and crystals as an answer to any problem I faced, becoming obsessed. It seemed to be the help I needed at the time. I tried to memorize and learn everything I could about this new age spirituality, and spent my money on products. Being spiritual was a "trend". As the years went on, I grew and realized that the most spiritual thing I can do is to be me and allow myself to be human. I don't need to follow specific rituals, or buy products from companies to feel like I'm doing enough, and realizing that was pretty refreshing. I'm really glad you touched on this topic because it seems to have gone too far, especially when I see creators asking viewers to "like and subscribe" to "claim", creating specific and over the top rules, and using spirituality to sell products. It's interesting because spirituality seemed to turn into the opposite of what it is, its ironic. Anyway, great video, as always :)

It’s no worse then a man who cheats on his wife or has sex before marriage or watches porn ect ect ect but some pick and choose a sin and decides to HATE the people , not the sin. I had a mushroom trip where I just realized mushrooms were simply just drugs and not some ego death nirvana shit. All substances have the capacity to enhance your emotions and change you perspective. But uhh don’t take outta hand ya’ll drugs are drugs at the end of the day. Shit, drinking makes me one with the universe sometimes, and coffee could give me stoner ideas. Even being sober and just pondering or changing your environment can give you inspiration and happiness or bad trips too obviously

I agree with this to a point. Drugs are just tools at the end of the day, they’re neither good or bad - that’s a very human judgement we make about them, but they all have a use. Psilocybin (shrooms) can be used to heal the neural pathways in a persons brain, particularly when they are stuck in a rut like with depression. It opens up more neural pathways for that person to find different ways of thinking that weren’t accessible before. There are credible scientific centres for psychedelic studies like MAPS that focus on this, without the spiritual ‘Im an exceptional human being’ woo woo. The other point is, ego death is just dangerous, we need an ego to survive and the oldest spiritual practices are about reigning it in with self-discipline aka hard freaking work. Mushrooms might give you inspiration to take this up, but they don’t do the hard work for you.

Thank you for addressing this topic. It needs talked about more. Unfortunately, the "spiritual community" online has become a mess. As a mentor, teacher, and sacred women's circle ritual facilitator for 20 years, I can tell you it's a haven for those who need more conventional treatment than what they hope to receive in a spiritual community. A "spiritual awakening" is difficult. This is true for anyone who's experienced it. Yes, you do have a shift in consciousness, like the proverbial "growing pains" but in a deeper, more profound spiritual sense. Do you change? Yes. Do you look at things differently? Yes, but often in a way that allows you to see more broadly and clearly. You don't change at your core-just more of you is being revealed, and that can take some getting used to by yourself and those around you. Yes, things in life might shift around and even seem chaotic, but this is the natural evolution of the growing and transformational process in life, period. This is different from someone who is having a psychotic break from reality. A spiritual awakening involves a profound shift in awareness and perspective. You might see the interconnectedness of all things more clearly and experience inner revelations that lead to a deeper understanding of yourself. Life circumstances can change and seem chaotic, but that's part of the natural growth process. On the other hand, a psychotic break is a severe mental health issue that needs professional medical attention. It involves disconnection from reality, delusions, hallucinations, and severe cognitive disruption. This state is dangerous and requires urgent intervention. *Discernment is key here*. While both spiritual awakenings and psychotic breaks involve shifts in perception, they are fundamentally different. A spiritual awakening enhances self-awareness and connection to a larger reality, leading to personal growth and clarity. Psychosis, however, leads to disconnection, delusion, and cognitive deterioration. It’s important to recognize that life changes and feeling like things are chaotic is normal during a spiritual awakening. This is different from the chaos of a psychotic break. People need to understand the difference to seek the right kind of help when needed. Spirituality is a part of life, and while it can be challenging, it's not the same as experiencing a mental health crisis.

It started with watching tarot readings and spiraled into new age teachings, spending hundreds of dollars on tarot and oracle decks, "new age" supplements, statues, charms, and crystals. This stuff is dangerous, especially when you have mental health issues which I did at the time. I actually suffered greatly bc of this delusion. My new psychiatrist advised me to stay far far away from that stuff when I lost touch with reality. It took some time to untangle myself from this world but I'm so much better off with mindfulness, professional therapy, and critical thinking skills.

Love for one another, love for the self and all living creations. If anything spirituality, to me, should connect us and not cause harm or make us believe that the world will burn (we already have the news for that 🥲). As I've spent more time away from tiktok and most spirituality in general, the more I notice how predatory this stuff can be. I have been studying astrology (hellenistic mostly), and it really doesn't work in the way tiktokers tend to portray it. Generally speaking, if someone claiming to be an astrologer makes a bunch of promises and concrete truth claims (stuff like "your ex will reach out to you on this day"), it's probably bs. My understanding of astrology is basically patterns of archetypes and themes that come up in different areas of life, and it isn't exactly straightforward. If you want to see those kinds of astrologers and give them money I won't stop you, but I strongly urge anyone seeking astrological or spiritual advice to become very familiar with manipulation tactics to watch out for. And don't just go in blind, do your own research on the practice too

  • @gawagai

I’m a tarot reader and it works the same way. We look for archetypal patterns that we’re looking to break. Going on straight up divination will never be as accurate as querents wants it to be and may reinforce bad decisions such as waiting for a bad ex to come back. Anyway, I think real magic of astrology and tarot is to observe patterns or inspire us to do better in walking into an archetype.

"oh someone is cursing me because they've convinced my ex husband to file for full custody, how do I stop him?". To them it's impossible that other people had the autonomy to act on their own volition, there had to have been an enemy behind this. When someone doesn't know how to take no for an answer, that's when they start to snap and spiral into spiritual psychosis

It has helped me become more aware of my traumas and to navigate them with kindness and forgiveness. Its so sad to see others who are confusing their experience to extremes that create an image for others who aren't spiritual to tear someone who is spiritual down. I think you touched on a lot of important things in this video, and a lot of these things were the reason I deleted TikTok and X years ago. As a spiritual person/practitioner, new people being brought in and exposed to all this don’t understand that it’s truly not about the “other”, relationships, exes, etc. Spirituality is about SELF growth, and being better for yourself and inevitably the “other”. There is such a heaviness in this type of social media. Fear is a big one. vulnerable people who have not done the work on themselves and don’t have knowledge outside of this type of media are preyed upon. True spirituality is not about fear, but about peace and acceptance. Anything otherwise should not be getting promoted.

Someone who I'm really close with discovered transcendental meditation & went through their 'spiritual awakening' around the same time I was becoming more politically radicalized, and they would tell me that they believe that nothing in this world truly matters and this plane of existence isn't real so it's not worth trying to change anything within the world. These ideas directly oppose my beliefs & values and it's been very hard to reckon with. It's also been difficult trying to reason with them about anything because they also believe that any stressful situation you deal with is your own fault because 'you chose to react that way'. I know this brand of spirituality too well. My mom had "The Secret" book growing up and has always believed in the law of attraction & manifestation. Dad is the Hotep type. I can respect the fact that these spiritual beliefs/religions can help people to cope with life but sometimes it's at the expense of fundamental empathy and discernment of good & bad.

i think theres a key difference to be made between radical and crazy/insane in terms of the alienation that can be felt during transitional phases in a non-psychotic spiritual journey. as your beliefs change, the people around you (if they all believe the same/similar things you *used to*) will definitely see you as odd or strange, or at the very least, countercultural. i experienced spiritual psychosis as a part of my process deconstructing from my traumatic high-demand religious upbringing. i’d suffered a lot of identity breaking abuse which presents similarly in healing to a spiritual ego death, but they are very different in impact. if an idea/thought pattern brings consistently more distress than anything else, it is not something that should be dwelled upon. i am a tarot reader, but i encourage mental health treatment and lifestyle adjustments before anything metaphysical because if your physical body is not okay, your spiritual one probably won’t be either. what we believe impacts how we live, and what we ingest (not just food, but the things we do) impacts what we believe. i think we could benefit from all taking moments to stop trying to LOOK like we’re having a life experience and focus on actually living the experience. internet algorithms can perpetuate the synchronicity delusions too with how much they know about every single one of us. so we need to ask ourselves, fully and honestly, is it a synchronicity or am I just spending too much time online? but people aren’t really ready to talk about that because it requires belief deconstruction on a lot of systemic levels. the internet is a powerful tool but it is also a deadly weapon. as in most things, it requires moderation. and synchronicities can definitely happen and are such a great form of encouragement, but they should be happening in the physical world more than the online one. ❤

I loved your video it was incredible. Watching this rise in spirituality has been both so exciting and heartbreaking to watch. As someone who was very fortunate to grow up in a household with a mother who believed and taught her family’s old Celtic believes and practices and a grandmother who felt the same way about her Nordic traditions. My siblings and I always had guidance and support to help us understand. The problem that I see a lot of people are now facing when then dive into spirituality is the lack of support, not having that person to go to when you have questions. But the reality is not everyone has access to that support or guidance. Although the internet can connect us and offer us a bunch of information it isn’t always health information. Something our Grandmother always used to tell us “Sometimes it’s just a bird” meaning that not everything is a sign or as a deeper meaning but that’s okay and is also part of the beaut of this world. I agree completely with you that we as humans want to connect and understand. It is easier for us to process things if there is a reason behind it. But unfortunately what happens is we start looking for a reason for everything it leads to paranoia, stress, self doubt and heartache. So this is why whenever I met someone who is going on this journey I tell them the phrase I mentioned earlier and try help support them when they get overwhelmed with all the information they learn. I know it’s hard for anyone who didn’t grow up in this life style and can easily get consumed. The best advice I can give is to trust yourself and be patient as frustrated as that can be. Remember to always trust your instincts when learning new information and if it doesn’t sit right with you no matter how knowledgeable the person may seem question it look up multiple opinions if you can. Also try to ask yourself first, pose the question to yourself and see what is your gut reaction. Never stop believing in yourself but always remember we doing our best when we have support. I hope you all grow and learn on your spiritual journey and find a community that supports and grows with you.

Because at the end of the day, WE are in control of our own personal lives. This applies to everyone. Great video, my dear! 🙏🏽❤️

Girrlll you hit the nail on the head. My low point was messaging a guy (who clearly didn’t want me) because the KZread tarot lady said in her video, “He wants to be with you but he’s waiting for you to reach out”. If he already didn’t want me, he DEFINITELY didn’t want me after that 😂 Like this wasn’t even a personal reading either, it was a general reading for all Libras 😭 So obvious what’s happening when you’re no longer in that vulnerable state, but when you’re in it, you’ll believe whatever it is you want to hear

For me spirituality is a journey to wisdom. So you need to seek discernment, being aware on how you treat yourself, people and earth, and, and being intentional with everything you do, and you say. Knowing that your actions come with advantages and disadvantages. Knowing your yin and yang and have a fair and healthy balance. Being vigilant with external frequencies, and paying attention to how they make you feel, so you know what’s not for you and what is good for you. Meeting your higher self is reaching wisdom.

Amazing video! I almost fell into "spiritual psychosis" about 5 yrs ago when I 1st started getting into spirituality. However, I noticed it almost immediately. I am bipolar and I knew I had to be careful with how much weight I put into the metaphysical world. Spiritual psychosis leaves you feeling as if you do not have a mental illness or anything to fix..you just are who you are and it's all up to the universe. You are the universe, you are the vessel, the chosen & only you and the chosen ones receive messages. It provided a sense of relief from guilt and accountability. You were just awakening! While I believe that awakening does share signs of typically mentally ill people,it should not be stressing or violent. Since 5yrs ago when I realized this,I've tried my best to tell some of my friends in the spiritual community that this may be what they're going through....I've had 0 luck so far. Even though sometimes what they hear, see,or feel is telling them to harm themselves or others,it's telling you to not seek help, and that everyone is against or below you. THAT is not awakening, psychic ability,or anything else. True awakening brings you peace and it takes a lot of time, patience and logical thinking. 😢I feel bad I can't do more for those who continue to suffer in the community, but at the end of the day it's up to us to separate real universal communication from our own earthly minds.

hey. reached me at a vulnerable time, just coming out of a really long bout of a lot of the things you just described. i suffer from OCD, BPD and other traumas which have made this psychosis very easy for me to slip into and use it to judge myself, and others. thank you for being real and so empathetic, i really appreciate your energy.

I’m stoked I found you and love how you explain things!!!! I resonate with my own sense of spirituality deeply and several aspects of it seem to be getting absolutely botched and weaponized online lol.

Wow Madisyn. This video was really well done and I love how you approached such a personal & sensitive topic with compassion and neutrality. I've been watching your videos for about a year and a half and you have really grown as a creator. Keep at it! Your voice is needed in the commentary community. 🧡

I agree with you about having a balanced approach to spirituality. Not everybody is ready for it. Unfortunately a lot of fear mongering conspiracy theories are wrapped up in the spiritual community on social media. That can lead to people’s reality consisting mainly of damaging fearful ideas. Many of the people you see with tarot don’t understand that tarot is an intuitive tool to help you understand your inner world rather than a tool for predicting the future. I don’t believe the future is set in stone. I believe there are many likely paths. Monks don’t have everything perfect. Like many religious folk, they also deny much of the human experience. Spirituality is a way for us to see how we limit ourselves and what patterns don’t help us in how we live our life the way we desire to live it which needs to include our human nature and other humans. I think the key here is that balance is ideal but it’s hard to know what that is when people like to see in only black and white and without nuance. Judging others based on outward appearance whether that be how they dress, act or what color of their skin, doesn’t help us get to that balanced approach especially if we don’t know them personally.

i went through this in 2020, thankfully I got out of it pretty quickly and didn't spend too long in psychosis, but it was scary. deleting tik tok helped immensely. be safe out there guys! do yourself a favor and be skeptical and make a pact with yourself to stay away from ALLLLL of this spiritual/new awakening/ conspiracy/ content
