In a democracy, why is populism necessarily a bad thing? It's the will of the majority of people, not the will of the elitist minority!

Except the majority don't often really know what they want. They have good ideas, but fail to think the process through - which leads to situations like the current Brexit negotiations.

The majority aren’t the experts on any given issue nor do they understand the laws and system they live under and yet they ultimately have control over the outcome. It doesn’t work too well when many people are basing their decisions on misinformation or disinformation and hold a world view based off of conspiracy theories and lazily blame the sitting government for everything rather then understand how we have arrived to the problem. On the flip side a corrupt dictator or small group is absolute corruption.

People are sick and tired of the status quo in politics. Populism is what is needed right now to shake up the paid off politicians.

Actually the Democrat Bill Clinton used the phrase "Make America Great Again" back in the 90s - no one had a go at him for saying it did they.

It was inevitable that popular ISM would rise, because traditional political parties have utterly failed us

One of the most common complaints heard is that Politicians are out of touch with ordinary people. Perhaps we could go back to a formerly successful system where unpaid Politicians politic-ed for half a day and worked at a regular paid [and hopefully relevant and honest] job for the other half. We would save a heap of Taxpayers' tax money, probably get more done in the same time by Politicians genuinely interested in the job and not big bucks and perks and the matter of being out of touch would no longer exist. The only time one generally sees a Politician in the flesh is when he/she campaigns for your vote.

Soft and fluffy should be at the top of political agenda. We are a super rich white majority in Australia. Sharing is caring.

From an American perspective: The experts and elites got us into Iraq. They missed all the 9.11 warning signs. They passed an insane crime bill which created the worlds highest prison population. They did nothing to stop the mortgage crisis. They funded gain of function research in the Wuhan lab and then lied about it. They strike down legal abortion. They do insider trading in the stock market. Tell me why am I supposed to be afraid of populism? These elites want my unearned trust. Whenever we trust them we end up poorer, in jail, or dead

I saw a market research company concluded : those surveyed thought the US is 17% Muslim, the real figure is 1%. By all means rubbish this statistic. I'm using it to critique populism. The populist wouldn't contradict those surveyed. Never contradict popular perception.

It's not that complicated everything back to economy. People vote for politicians but don't know anything about economics and finance which just a minority understand and use that to keep others in dark.

Americans do not care about legal imagration. We are all for it and I believe Euorope and Australia agree. So what should we do...Push back 2018

Interesting...the whole concept of populism is worth studying especially in light of how it influences #change in massive amounts of people to shift their mindset toward or against something.

Another country that's turned it's back on there ppl and has welcomed immergration with open arms. If you study history we are making the same mistakes Rome did.

Apparently you become less wise, not more, as you get older. hmm!!

I love this series! I’m only 14 but I want to stay informed and this series has really helped summarise important topics for me. Thank you!

Patrick Rogers I don’t get what you mean by that? You said you challenge them to a debate not that you wanted to show them your view point. I’m pretty sure that teachers lie all the time the amount of questions we’ll ask just to be deflected with some rubbish is uncountable especially in more controversial subjects such as religion.

I fail to see how this is “A Different Lens”, it all just seems to be the same bigoted, ignorant and doubtful summarisation of contemporary populism I’ve heard all-over. No discussion, just everyone reading from the same political script,

Extraction of third world countries natural resources by western cultures guarantees the people will mirage to those western countries because of the wealth those resources have generated. In other words capitalism is the root cause of this problem.

This is the most bad faith, uncharitable analysis of populism I’ve ever heard.

This people have cero credibity by now this so called experts should be tired of always being wrong.
