Red Wings fan here. Maurice first came to my attention as the coach of the Hurricanes in 2002. Was impressed that he took a good, but not great team to the Finals that year. That team made me incredibly nervous through the first 3-plus games of that series, as they hung with the 2002 Wings. No small accomplishment there. He has progressed nicely from the youngest coach in the NHL to one of its elder statesmen and has displayed a lot of class in the process. Congrats on finally winning the Cup, Coach. You earned and deserved it. Cheers.

I'm a Caniac that was 10 in 2002. I still have trauma from that series haha.

@mattmacknight3000 Well, if it's any consolation, the Hurricanes beat the team that upset the Wings in order to win the Cup just 4 years later. Carolina was a very good, scrappy team that earned their way to the Finals in '02. They just ran into an All-Time team there. They may have learned something from that Finals, though, because they were DEFINITELY ready to win the Cup in '06. That was an underrated team, in my opinion. They deserved that Cup.

@@csmith1298 appreciate that insight and would have to agree. I had a neighbour who was from Detroit and he had a lot of fun joking about beating us. 4 years later my family had moved back to Canada and we got a phone call from that old neighbour congratulating the Canes. Always felt like there’s a Canes-Wings rivalry because of the old Compuware connection and then 2002 but in reality I was just a dedicated 8 year old Caniac that took too long to let that loss go. Raleigh, for me, will always be Hockey Town South after that ‘02 run.

Yup. There's definitely a connection between the two clubs, as there probably is with any two teams in the league. Still, I find things like the Fedorov offer sheet, the Illitch/Karmanos rivalry, and Maurice's start coaching the Junior Red Wings to be interesting tidbits to read and learn about. Cheers.

As a Panthers' fan, when he was hired, I was willing to give him a chance. Because I was consistently impressed with the way the Jets played under him. It turned out to be the right hire at the right time. He will always be remembered in this franchises history.

A no excuses type of coach. Just what the panthers needed. So happy as a Panthers fan to have him leading the team.

Lifelong sports fan and Clevelander.. transplant to Boca and Panther fan since 2011. When he finally won the Cup, being a Clevelander... this was incredible for me. I finally felt my cities collective gasp and win in 2016 when the Cavs won. I cried. Lol. I'm 53 and never saw any major sports championship. Now, I was able to relive it with Maurice. I can't root for players like I used to, since they come and go so fast, but this guy... he pulled at the heartstrings. His passion and love for his players is why I have nothing but respect for him. I've been privileged to coach over 40 youth sports teams. I only have one year left. My kid ages out of sports.... lol. This man inspires me. Congrats, Paul.

I’ll admit as a Panthers ticket holder I questioned both the Maurice hire and the Tkachuk trade after a Presidents trophy season

I love Paul Maurice so much and would take him as my coach any time! As a Wings fan, Newsy has a lot to prove this year, improve our younger players' game another level, improve our team defense, get kids into lineup and find their roles in this organization. We showed we can score, then it's playoffs or bust. If not, gimme Paul Maurice as soon as the time is right. Stevie Y needs to somehow add a few more pieces. Once that happens Paul will drag the Wings over the hump. Because right now we're nowhere near that storied silver chalice.

your take on game 5 in the recent cup final is way off, re watch the game bud, panthers dominated the whole game and oilers won because of special teams, not just 5 minutes. that game didn't plant doubt in my mind, it restored faith. the doubt came after game 6.

Yeah I thought so too. It was a clear indication that the Panthers could get back to their game. Just needed a break or 2 and that game 5 could have easily gone to the Cats.
