On today’s FD Explained, we take a look at the talismanic Jack Grealish, who fans and pundits are hoping to see play a key role for England at Euro 2020! How did he become the player he is today?
One of the most valuable players in the Premier League and a fully fledged England international, Jack Grealish is now the footballer many hoped he’d become when he first made waves at Aston Villa as a teenager. But in many ways it’s been a long time coming. The Englishman made his Villa debut all the way back in 2014, and had to wait until the club was relegated to the Championship two years later to cement his place in the team long-term.
Similarly, it took until 2020 for him to get his first call-up for England, five years after he switched allegiance from the Republic of Ireland to the Three Lions, while tabloid attention in his early playing days painted him as a loose cannon and cast doubt over his ability to fulfil his potential.
Now 25, at his physical peak and having captained Villa for over two years, a time period in which they’ve consolidated themselves as an exciting Premier League outfit once again, Grealish has proved his doubters wrong and is gaining the kind of hype reserved only for England’s very best players.

@@footballerzz7 I’m not sure tbh mate , I would certainly imagine there would be clips from when villa won the next gen competition and Grealish was part of that team. I was referring to when I used to go watch the youth teams play you could see then he was going to be a special type of player
I remember watching him in his early days at Villa Park. How he has developed makes me so proud to be a fan of Villa. This boy will be a Villa legend forever - it's in his blood!

would love to see one for mason mount, how he struggled under chelsea’s ruthless loan system and finally got his breakthrough under lampard, and basically because of a transfer ban

Not really, he was struggling abit at first in Vitesse. Once he was able to overcome that his rise have been meteoric really.

@@robinc6288 i think you're wrong ...rooney was past his peak at 25 as are many other of these hyped up youngsters ( the only time rooney was close to looking like a world star was euro 2004 ) whats grealish going to do beyond 25 when his so called dribbling skills diminish ?
"Overrated diver" fans were saying for the past 5 years. Now they're all obsessed with him and demand he starts for England. Villa fans have always backed him and known exactly how good he is.

First time I'd heard of him was this year reminding me of Beckham and his son
ironically its his socks down attitude that makes him what he is... a great player and one that could open up any defense

I think the only surprising thing is how long it's taken for him to get the recognition
Seeing a piece like this but more for an underrated player or older player making their breakthrough would be interesting
Those three seasons in the Championship are a big reason as to why he's the player he is now. Three years of being able to flourish and not have his confidence knocked back. Johnstone, Henderson, Mings, White, Trippier, Phillips and Kane have all benefitted from having spells in the Championship as well

Lucky his driving ban wasn't worse his lockdown bizarre kickoff last year could've damaged his career yet nobody has remembered it. Same with Maguire in Greece.

I noticed he dropped the ball several times against Denmark he was subbed..I barely watched football. I didn't watch qualifiers and didn't know who was playing. I watched major champs not friendlies and qualifiers. I spotted JG at the finals impressed! He even attempted at goal too. He's getting better. Trippier replaces him well.
