The Rings of Power REVIEW : Episode 4 : A Middle-earth

Ойын-сауық

Join Jonathan as he watches The Rings of Power, Episode 4, "The Great Wave" for the first time, and offers his off-the-cuff reactions! Despite the clear inspiration this episode takes from Assassin's Creed, there's surprisingly more to like than previous episodes--but maybe that's just because everyone forgot about the Harfoots (as they should)...

    I may have liked more of the show... but the bad is still bad. Particulary how Miriel and Galadriel find common ground... how Elendil recruits a few folks... the Númenorean xenophobia... and the Mary Sue Galadriel who apparently can climb as well as any Assassin's Creed hero!

    If this “Galadriel” is supposed to be inspirational for girls, imagine what she will inspire girls to be. Angry, unkind, unsympathetic, raging against anyone who says “no” to them, self-righteous, self-absorbed, ready to murder people who disagree with them, and unaware of how to read a map.

    Even Inigo Montoya, driven since childhood by vengeance, is a far more interesting character after only a few minutes of screen time than Galadriel. I suppose the intent is that she will have a 'character arc' (bit of an overused term) and will evolve to learn humility and wisdom and all that; but the trick of such an arc is to make sure we as an audience _care_ about her enough to follow her on that journey. Instead, the only reason that anyone cares is because they know in advance (from Jackson, at least) what she will become.

  • @gogaonzhezhora8640

    I don't think she will have that arc. That's the subconscious hope of Tolkien fans that they at least in the end will still lead to Tolkien. My guess is she will just remain this unbearable Mary Sue Karen and there is no hidden agenda for her development. That's just how they see "empowered" women.

    Notice how Galadriel actually asks to see the manager (the king) because things are not going her way... well she demands to see the manager. The dwarf storyline is by far the most interesting and enjoyable to watch. That is why the episode was better, more of the focus was on them and the plot of it is actually going places and things are happening, instead of repeating the same (looking at you Galadriel) back and forth.

  • @Kaitonel

    @Kaitonel

    Жыл бұрын

    @@sunsin1592 the awakening of the Balrog happens though, granted it is happening at the wrong time to the wrong Durin but still, it is not exactly lame ass to include it. Plus it has not even happened yet. The stone singing is fine, it's not a new concept in fantasy for dwarves to do such a thing, they practically worship their mountains. Tolkien may not have conceptualised it but he didn't say they don't do it either. He had stated that dwarves are much more attuned to the depths of the earth, as the elves are to trees and nature etc. Not seeing the kids changes nothing about the plot so that doesn't bother me. As for the beards, it's a lore thing yes but like the kids changes nothing about the quality (or lack of) of the writing for the plot line. I can't argue about the stone breaking as that was stupid for the plot yes. But as a dwarven ritual it was fine though, plenty of cultures have similar ritual competions. Overall the dwarf storyline is still the superior part of the show, but the bar is so low its not difficult to be.

    It's just mind-boggling that they seemingly didn't have any kind of QA in the pre-production. Aren't there tons of people in Hollywood and elsewhere who are professional proof readers and experts on catching errors like the ones they are making here? This script would barely pass as the first iteration of any screenplay, it should have been canned and redone before the first actor was cast and before the first scene was shot.

    Something to think about: It really, really feels like they're cost cutting. There's a significant lack of action. The action scene we did get this episode was boring and in slow motion, which made it really boring. The Adar scene was used twice, but just cut early at the end of Ep 3. They're reusing a lot of the same sets for multiple scenes. Sometimes one scene will end, they'll switch angles, and focus on different characters on the same set. All of the actors are unknown. I heard someone else say it - and I do think there's money laundering going on lol. The money is NOT on the screen.

    Although it's possible that Adar feels that any fight against the Watchtower is already won and perhaps he hopes Arondir will take it as a gesture of good faith. I'm just stretching here, it does make no sense that he was given his weapons back. What would be more likely is that Arondir would be delivered to the gates of the watchtower by the orcs, beaten within in an inch of his life, or perhaps even dead with a message stuck to him. An arrow stuck in his eye would do it.

    I am really starting to hate Galadriel. She was wise enough to stay away from being involved with Feanor but is really impulsive here and stupid. Galadriel is supposed to be wise. This Galadirel is insufferable... Instead of this thing, have a story about Feanor or his sons instead!! Some of the decisions people make are very infuriating! Theo purposefully puts others in trouble because of the sword. Isildur purposefully screws up and, as a consequence, gets his friends fired. Dwarfs are fine, but I hate how insensitive Celebrimbor is towards Elrond. The sons of Feanor were the ones who destroyed his family, yet, he casually talks about Eärendil. I wish this would be explored! How the actions of Feanor have affected Elrond and Celebrimbor!!

    Changes to historical material for narrative reasons (i.e. for better filmability) are okay in films - Only Glorfindel or Tom Bombadil in LoR should be mentioned here. And no one would object to Hamlet or the like being portrayed in a completely different context. A Macbeth equivalent set in an Indian kingdom doesn't hurt anyone. But to mutilate characters or content in original stories or settings beyond recognition, is an affront to someone else's cultural achievement. The worst thing about RoP is that most of the male characters are portrayed as jerks, or seem slightly gay. But the crowning glory is the character Galadriel, who slaughters her way through hordes of orcs and trolls as Galadriel the Barbarian. Nothing remains of the dignified, powerful and enigmatic sorceress in Tolkien's works. Admittedly, the two colored actors (Elf & Dwarf) still have the best performance, in terms of acting. I'd rather not say anything about the Harfoots, they remind me too much of the Ewoks from StarWars.

    It definitely was the most watchable of all the episodes so far. Galadriel can not be fixed. We have to try to endure the petulant, smarty-pants Amazonian warrior. I really enjoy everything they are doing in Khazad Dum. Elrond, Durin IV and Dísa have great chemistry. It is too bad they couldn't give us this kind of interaction anywhere else. They really messed up Miriel too. The actress's acting has been horrible up to now. I still haven't figured out what just happened in Episode 4. She was clearly anti-Faithful. Then she goes to her father and said something like: the moment we have long feared has come. The Elf is here. That is clearly what a elf-hayer would say. Then the next episode she and Galadriel are BFF. Just stupid, awful writing...

    The ending was a great visual feast, but it was completely unearned. is absolutely no reason why Muriel changed her mind - except the pedals falling from the sky. In other words, there wasn't a dramatic story for her to change her mind.

    I seem to recall that Durin I discovered Mithril in Kazad Dum back in the first age... and in the PJ movies, Gandalf points out a mithril vein on the main level of the city as they are passing through it. Mithril was 'THE" wealth of Moria.

    I always look forward to your reviews and comments. I think the showrunners are banking on a Stockholm Syndrome effect with their audience, or whatever it is to call it: as the show gets less bad, viewers will give their sympathy and then their loyalty and become fans of it. Or, whether that's the showrunners' conscious intent, I think it's a danger for a lot of viewers who are kind-hearted and inclined to give others the benefit of the doubt. As far as I'm concerned, I will have peace with Amazon's show when it hangs from a gibbet for the sport of its own crows.

    Well this is better because the plot was actually advanced. and the last scene was great even though it was completely unearned. I like how we're introduced to all these characters as if they are all Sauron all the time. Maybe Galadriel will be Sauron. That would make some sense.

To me he looks elvish, just obviously not like a normal elf but somehow corrupted/evil with the burned skin (one of Morgoths and later Saurons theme was fire so... I guess it fits? Or maybe I'm trying to read actual lore into it :D) and him seemingly leading orcs

    The contrived reason for Galadriels single mindedness is the death of her brother. The problem is that this happened in the first age. Sure it is Sauron who sends the werewolf to do the fell deed. The battle we see is not the occasion where Finrod was killed. Then we have a problem with time. When the rings of power were fashioned Tar Palantir was not yet born, that was 1500 years later. Yet in the show the crafting of the rings has not even startet and we are in about the year 3200 or so. When will happen all that has happened heretofore? There is not enough time for all of that, particularly the fortification of Mordor, the founding of Umbar, the erection of Baraddur!

    my guess is, each character story was assigned to a different writer/s bcoz the quality of writing changes accordingly. for example the person writing galadriels lines is not the same as the person writing durins lines, just a thought but its very possible.

    Has anyone thought of how many new characters Amazon and their beloved writers created already just to perform 4 episodes so far? And on top of this watching a known character like Galadriel performing the way these brilliant minds wrote so far her plot?

  • @justlilyanne
    @justlilyanne Жыл бұрын

    I decided I was too quick to shut the show down - I gave it 23 minutes in episode 1 and turned it off. I binged the four episodes last night and I will say visually it's stunning (then it should be given CGI tech) Bear McCreary writes a great soundtrack. Some of the performances, despite the writing, are good. (Here comes the Ned Stark "but.") The uneven writing and lack of cohesive story is the fail. At times I try to figure out if the writers are trying to write like they think Tolkien would mimic Shakespeare or if it's Shakespeare mimics Tolkien. Doesn't matter because it doesn't work. This writing team needs to put a 100% bona fide fantasy author in charge. They just don't understand the genre and are too trope reliant and ask for too much suspension of disbelief (Galadriel is going to swim across an ocean - many, many, many, eyerolls).
