Amazon Writers: "So, this brother dude here, Finrod, you called him? Why is he important?" Tolken Lore: "Well aside from being a pretty cool and noble Elf King, and Galadriel's brother, he is best remembered for bare handed wrestling a werewolf to death. He died from the wounds, but that werewolf was way more messed up than he was. Pretty badass bro actually. Fan favorite I believe." Amazon Writers: "Ok, that's nice. We'll have him killed by orcs off screen and Sauron will desecrate his corpse for no real reason. That should be fine." Dicks.

pretty much spot on. in a recent intervieuw Gennifer Hutchison showed how much she looks down on the audience by stating: "don't give then what theÿ WANT, but give them them what they NEED." Fun fact: between the time Annatar (aka Sauron, aka (ugh...) Halbrand) arrives in Eregion and presents himself as an emissary of the Valar, bearing gifts for the Elves, and the forging of the rings, Annatar teaches Celebrimbor and the other jewelcrafters forging and magic for 300 years. THREE HUNDRED YEARS. Then he leaves, and Celebrimbor and the other craftsmen proceed to make many lesser rings over the next 90 years, culminating in the forging of the Three. There was never a Mithril supply mcguffin... Another fun fact: neither Galadriel, nor Elrond, nor Gil-Galad ever trusted him.

To correct some errors, he left Eregion in the year 1597, after Sauron and the elves had forged 16 great rings of power and many lesser rings in the intervening 300 years, and it took him 3 years to get back to Mordor. It was during those three years that Celebrimbor forged the Three Elven Rings, (which he named Vilya, Nenya, and Narya) which Sauron neither knew about, nor saw, nor had any hand in making. It was in the year 1600 of the Second Age that Sauron forged the One. Celebrimbor was wearing one of the Three at the time, and was able to hear the words that Sauron declared upon making and finishing the One: _Ash Nazg durbatulûk, Ash Nazg gimbatul, Ash Nazg thrakatulûk agh burzim-ishi krimpatul._ When he heard these words, Celebrimbor knew the elves had been betrayed, that the Lord of Gifts Annatar was in fact Sauron, and he guessed something of his plan. Sauron was also not hoodwinked. He had felt Celebrimbor leave the wraith world, and perceived that more great Rings had been forged that he did not know about. The next 90 years were spent preparing for the inevitable war that would come. It is recorded as the War of Sauron and the Elves, and lasted roughly from the years 1690 to 1705 of the second age, though the actual fighting took place from 1693 to 1702. During the time spent preparing, the Elven rings were each given to different bearers and hidden away. Celebrimbor might have also given one of the great rings to the King of Khazad Dûm, who was his longtime friend. During that war, Eregion was laid waste, and the elves known as the jewelsmiths were utterly defeated, despite their best and most valiant efforts. Tol-en-Edhel was besieged and destroyed, and Celebrimbor was captured and tortured for the location of the great rings. The nine for men in the seven for dwarves were recovered from a safe which Celebrimbor had revealed, perhaps less one if it was true that the elf lord had given the nearby dwarven king a ring. But no matter his torture, Celebrimbor would say nothing of the location of the Three. When it was seen that he would give no more information, Sauron had him tied to a post and shot by orcs, and then had his naked corpse impaled, to be used as a horrific banner at the head of his army. Elrond arrived with a vanguard from Lindon, but too late to do anything of much note to drive Sauron back; his army of orcs was greater than anything seen on Middle Earth since the beginning of the last battle with Morgoth. Millions of orcs. The dwarves of Khazad Dûm sallied forth into the flank of Sauron's great army, causing enough confusion that they abandoned the pursuit of Elrond to focus on the dwarves. But the dwarves knew better than to stick around; they retreated back into the mountain and shut the Western Gates, which never opened again until the fellowship of the Ring found them nearly 5,000 years later. Elrond had retreated up the Bruinen river (if my memory doesn't fail me) and had established the beginnings of what would be Rivendell/Imladris. With all of his foes in Eregion utterly defeated, or retreated to places he could not follow, he went north to attack Lindon. And that was when an army of Númenoreans showed up at Mithlond, the Gray Havens. An army so vast that the volume of ships required to transport them there overflowed the harbor. And this was the Númenoreans at the height of their power: a numberless army of 7 ft tall men wielding steel bows so strong not even the elves could string them, powerful beyond the reach of other men that walked the face of Middle Earth. The elves and the Númenoreans together dealt a crushing defeat to Sauron's army and forced him to retreat southward, where he was caught in a pincer, because the forces of the Númenoreans were _so_ numerous that they had sent a _second army,_ of similar size to the first, to land on the next harbor South of the Gray Havens. This second battle, resulting from the pincer maneuver, so utterly defeated Sauron's forces that he had to return to Mordor with barely a handful of his personal guard left, cursing the Númenoreans who had stolen his victory from him. If they had focused the series around these events and had not deviated from the source material, rings of power would be an unequaled success that would dwarf even the masterpieces that Peter Jackson directed. Tl;Dr I corrected a Minor error in op's comment, gave a Middle Earth history lesson, and pointed out how stupid it was for the show runners to forsake the source material. If you made it this far, congratulations. If not, I can't say I blame you: this comment sort of grew in the telling.

@@andyknightwarden9746 This is precisely what they should have focused on for the first 3 seasons with maybe the origins of the Nazgul, allowing them some leeway for invention. @@gerisaccomanno7422 I would say that the first season should have been about the seduction of the elves and the forging of the Rings of power both great and small. It would end on a cliffhanger when Annatar leaves Eregion and returns to Mordor, where he forges the One Ring. The second season would start 90 years later while everyone's finishing their preparations for war and cover the events of the war of Sauron and the elves. The third season would focus on Sauron gifting the stolen great rings of power to nine men and six or seven dwarven lords, as well as show signs of The Shadow that fell over Númenor by showing fortified settlements of Númenoreans along the western coasts of Middle Earth. The fourth season would focus on the blue wizards, their arrival and their purpose, how they carried it out, as well as developing the Eastern side of Middle Earth. The fifth season would focus on the final downfall of Númenor. And the 6th season would be about the rise of the faithful Númenoreans in the west of Middle Earth founding the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor, with the final seventh season covering the events of the war of the last alliance.

Do you know what the odds are of getting it caught in a stirrup, sitting on it, having it whip across your face blinding you- you could accidentally strangle yourself in enough of a melee- NO ONE in history with hair to their ass has not understood this fact.

If you look at 21:46 without context, it absolutely looks like he is some kind of evil vizier or advisor, speaking softly and staying in the background, but certainly not the high king of all elves during their age of greatest power. Even King Tommen had a more regal feel, and he was literally written to be in slightly over his head.

15:05 that’s the biggest sin with Galadriel. Just as Aragorn’s greatest moment was in bowing to a hobbit, Galadriel’s greatest moments were in her treatment of Frodo and Gimli. The only times she ever used force, it was with magic. In fact, in RoP she could’ve used magic in so many moments to make the plot bearable w/ sea creature, saving weak soldier instead of abandoning him, fighting the snow troll, negotiating with Numenor, sailing faster, fighting orcs, defending against volcano, repelling Sauron, etc. At least it’s good material to learn from.

Yeah so many plot points would have been at least bearable if she was using her powers in those moment! I mean that cringe 'escape from prison' scene when she casually pushes several guards at once hah, here the magic would be much more natural way to go, hell in The Hobbit we see elven enchantments putting people to sleep! One could think that such a thing would be useful for escape from prison :). Then the powers like the famous "mirror of Galadriel" that shows the visions of the future, present and past, it could have been important plot device and should have been used instead of palantir (PALANTIRI IN LORE DO NOT SHOW THE FUTURE and they are sole property of the house of Elendil so Miriel shouldn't even have one!) Galadriel should have been using her mirror to guide, advise and convince Miriel, also this could have been used as learning experience for Galadriel for she would learn naturally through trial and error that the visions themselves are uncertain and she could learn important truths to not be too rash in making decisions, be more thoughtful and analyze deeply the complexity and nuance of each situation and think of consequences of the actions and this would play naturally into what Galadriel in book says of her mirror: "'What shall we look for, and what shall we see?' asked Frodo, filled with awe. 'Many things I can command the Mirror to reveal,' she answered, 'and to some I can show what they desire to see. But the Mirror will also show things unbidden, and those are often stranger and more profitable than things which we wish to behold. What you will see, if you leave the Mirror free to work, I cannot tell. For it shows things that were, and things that are, things that yet may be. But which it is that he sees, even the wisest cannot always tell.'" ... "'Remember that the Mirror shows many things, and not all have yet come to pass. Some never come to be, unless those that behold the visions turn aside from their path to prevent them. The Mirror is dangerous as a guide of deeds.'" And then there is most important...Galadriel's mental powers, telepathic abilities with which she gains great insight into minds of others!

They don’t know how to write great female characters who aren’t exactly like (the worst) men. They don’t understand the value of traits like intelligence, wisdom, or kindness. The material handed them a legendary witch-queen who who commands loyalty and inspires fear with her mind and magic alone. They could have unpacked how she got there. Unfortunately, the idea of a person-male or female-who doesn’t have to pick up a weapon to wield great power totally escapes them.

This line is pure gold and goes to show how much a failure Nori is at trying to be a revisited Frodo. First thing to comes to my mind about Frodo's character is his humbleness, which Nori lacks desperatly. She knows her destiny is awaiting because... basically god told her. Isnt that kinda breaking the fourth wall btw? Because yeah its hard not to see the writers hands as the cosmic entity here. One of the reasons Frodo's character works so well (good writing) is because he isnt the adventurous one to begin with. Then the quest is firstly forced onto him until that point where before his eyes, and at the very minute the return of the ring is revealed to the world people are already starting to fight over it. He doesnt do it because he's THE ONE, but rather because there's no one else willing to be that guy. That's a huge difference. Modern writing sucks. Not only does it sucks but somehow it also manages to fail so hard that its having complete opposite effects of the intentions behind it. LIke the intention of building strong characters. Take that scene with the snow troll. It surely shows how much of a capable warrior Galadriel is. Its non canon, sure, but im not a hard core fan so its kinda whatever to me... however by trying so hard to display what is supposed to be a quality for her character (swordsman skills), the writing and staging of the scene manages to do the complete opposite by raising so many disturbing questions that will inevitably suck any viewers with average IQ out of the show. Are the men accompanying her even soldiers? Why even bother with them when they can't even fight, and are CLEARLY slowing down Galadriel who CLEARLY doesnt need help for anything? How can she be commander and yet lack so much leadership by having so little to aboslutely no care about the well being of her men? Why is she acting like a 15 y old tiktoker? Is this ALL SEASON supposed to portray her as a flawed character that will grow over time? How many millenium does one need to grow? She could have been alone the all time, showing a all bunch of skills (survival, swordsman, resourceful, ect) and the scene would have turned out very differently in terms of character building. Or we could have had an epic battle scene, like the moria one, where it would have taken both the all squad skills and effort combined to good leadership from the commadner for them to manage to defeat that monstruosity of a troll. Depicting some other skills for Galadriel. But no we end up with a weird blend of these two versions...

I mean, any type of entertainment _can_ be called unnecessary. Personally, I think a good LOTR-series would've been goddamn amazing. GOT, despite the abysmal last seasons, was still a very entertaining "grand fantasy saga" on screen. WOT hasn't really started properly. Would've loved something like ROP (second age and all that jazz), done properly. Sadly, they essentially took the worst decision every time a decision had to be made - with exception to the vfx studios, they mostly did their work well. Mostly, but I don't mind the odd shot here and there (bluescreen-valinor-headed elves, elves that are too small, especially in comparison with dwarves, etc) as I don't expect perfection.

This was a wholly corporate project from the conceptual stage made by people who clearly saw it as a purely business transaction or career stepping stone. Jeff Bezos wanted 'game of thrones'.... he didn't care about the Tolkien IP, he just saw it as AN IP that could be used in the same manner. The producers, all 500 of them, likewise were clearly motivated simply by grabbing some easy prestige for a failing production company. The writers? i mean, they clearly never read the books, but hey, after a failed movie writing career maybe TV is easier? So yeah, you really can argue this show was entirely unnecessary. There was literally no artistic motivation to make this show. The core goal was never even entertainment, it was all about personal gain in various ways.

@@petriew2018 I totally agree. The writing is so bad, it's hard to understand how it got greenlit. And tho I personally try and steer clear of the 'culture war', this show looks like it was written by the diversity coordinator. It's so hamfisted and transparent, that you can't help but to notice how offensive it is. You can see that they were told to put a black person in every race, and that they had to be in a position of authority within their faction. So we get a black queen of Numenor with a white father (if this raises your eyebrows you're a racist), the harfoot chieftan and Dwarven princess; and Arondir, who is just a soldier, but he gets the Legolas treatment. They conspicuously have the one black elf being the victim of racism that is supposed to be man/elf in nature, but the implications are as subtle as a knife in your eurethra. And then they wrote an entire episode to have a scene with him chained up and enslaved by white orcs wearing white hoods, which ends exactly where it started - with Arondir being captured, only to have the antagonist Adar inexplicably release him, with his armor and weapons. So the entire plot line was all just a contrivance to have the scene with a black elf chained up by white supremacist orcs. And why wouldn't they give the elves long beautiful hair like Tolkien described, and audiences expect? It would've been an easy win. Giving the ancient elves fresh, modern hair styles is a hard decision to defend, since it's only garnered confusion and complaints from the fans... unless you imagine the costume designers trying to make long hair on the black elf look right, and realizing it just didn't (this is why in House of the Dragon they went with dreadlocks), so the solution was to just give all the male elves short hair, rather than just Arondir; now the elves are just regular people with pointy ears. These people have sacrificed the story, characters and world building at the alter of diversity. They've intentionally portrayed the male characters as weak and ineffectual so as to make the women feel stronger in comparison. They seem to have a rule that a white male character can only be strong and likeable if he turns out to be evil, or proven wrong by his female companions. They completely changed Galadriel's character to what they think a strong woman is like, and made her weak in the process. They motivate her with revenge for her brother's death, and then 7 episodes in mention that her husband is missing; and she obviously has no interest in looking for him. Besides, he looks like a 'silver clam' because his armor doesn't fit. They hate that Celeborn exists, because a loving husband only serves to get in a strong woman's way and decrease her agency, you see. Celebrimbor is supposed to be a strong, handsome, young (for an elf) smith who is driven and deadly serious. But they chose to portray him as an old buffoon who has never heard of an alloy, rather than risk the audience taking a liking to a strong white male. Bronwyn - a healer - assumes the role of leader of her village, not because she is naturally suited for that role, but because there are literally no other men in her village that aren't super old or super young. And then of course they make sure to have the female leaders making plans and congratulating eachother for being such strong and independent women, with no pesky men around, to pass that Bechtel test. I was also wondering why they bothered to make Queen regent Miriel go blind... what plot purpose will that serve? Probably none, but it does check the 'disabled representation' box. No one has a problem with strong females in fantasy. No one is offended by diversity per se. But it makes no sense to portray an isolated nomadic tribe, or a secluded island nation with little to no contact with the world as diverse. This cannot be, diversity only exists today because different groups developed in isolation. Sorry about the rant... tl;dr is that the entire plot of this show and all the characters only exist to serve the diversity coordinator. That's why people are complaining about it, not because we are offended by the idea of a black elf or a woman swinging a sword.

The "Nomand Design" of the Halffoots/Hobbits/Halflings is really funny. Making Nori the outsider is the typical plot point, but the idea that Nomads are adventurous by nature, not sticking to the safety of a settlement but keep touring. So if Nori is "counter culture" in her group, she´d be a builder, settler. Not an adventurer/nomad.

OK. Wow. My memory apparently edited the rock & boat metaphor to weed out some of the extra stupid stuck to it. Because I had not rewatched the full clip since I saw it first. And watching it anew here it managed to, once again, blow my mind with how vapidly stupid it was. I feel when Galadriel tries to add to Finrod's metaphor. Its like even her character is getting confused by the meaning of it, and starts to treat it as fact and not metaphor. When she says, but the water can reflect the light... From nonsensical analogy to confusing interpretation. Absolute gibberish.

It always amazes me, that random people on youtube can make extremely well structed analysys of why shows like this are terrible, (usually the ones with about 1000 or less subscribers), and yet, neither the general public nor the "genius top of the top artists" in hollyweird are able to understand any of it. The comparison why Frodo works and why female Frodo does not is a great example of this. You can break down why this show failse in such well structured, yet easy to understand arguments, and yet, people like this are supposed to be the "haters", because the "tolerant" ones declared so. This world is effed beyond belief.

You are confusing artistic merit with commercial success, I really doubt that the show is anything close to a failure. And well made art like Dune or Blaserunner usually sells far worse than Fasst and furious, Jurassic park, Marvel or Starwars. All commercial entertainment over art. And this guy is way over exaggerating. The show is not that bad and Tolkien is not that good, they are both entertainment over art ( one moreso).

"There is a thin veil of world-building dressed over the show that wants to pull you in with the premise of exploring the Second Age of Middle Earth all while refusing to realize concepts, settings, events or characters past the surface level" Surface level you say? Surface level is doing basics by the book. They can't even get the timeline right. Imagine that - between Sauron seducing elves and awakening of Durin's Bane lies some *THREE+ THOUSANDS YEARS* . One is event from early to mid-Second Age and the other from when 2/3 of Third Age have already passed. Its like making a movie about Crusade Era when Moses helps Roman Emperor Constantine to defend the Jerusalem against Bolsheviks. Show haven't touched Tolkien's work even on surface level - it literally just picked few small bits, some of them disconnected, and cramped them all together. That's not a surface level even for a fanfiction.

I have shortish hair and I have to use an Alice band to keep it out of my face when I do certain things. I find it difficult to believe that Xena ... sorry ... Galadriel spent a couple of thousand years galloping all over the joint gymnastically whacking enemies without ever braiding her hair or at least tying it back. Random thought, perhaps, and minor in the face of all of the other atrocities committed here, but it annoys the hell out of me just looking at all of that fake hair flopping about. It’s obviously a combination of the Hobbit names “Proudfoot” and “Brandybuck”, even though this supposedly happens before there were Hobbits. Just one more turd on the incredibly heavy shitpile this show is. Thanks for your video, mate-

@@schwarzerritter5724 Exactly- and I’m not positive on this, but in the 2nd Age, it might still be only called the Baranduin, people might not have even started calling it the Brandywine yet. I guess they just expect us to accept all the details they played so fast and loose with, as if this isn’t a world that real fans know inside and out. People like the showrunners who pretend to know the lore stick out to actual fans like the narc at the party- “I’d like to buy one drugs, please”😆

When I watched this series, I was left baffled nearly every couple of minutes. Every episode left me wondering, "What the hell is happening and more importantly, WHY is it happening!?!" Lines of dialogue do not flow properly from one line to the next. It's so... Wrong; stilted, disjointed. I'm a writer. I pay close attention to prose. This is just on another level. I cannot properly describe just how many cardinal rules are broken during the run time of this season. The worst examples of bad cliche; mistakes new writers make and learn to avoid early on; dialogue not worthy of strangling your worst enemy with; it's all here, and so much more. Rings of Power is a stellar example of all the things you never do when you make a TV series. It is an even better example of all the things you never do when you ADAPT a work so beloved, it borders on religion for some.

My favourite thing about the ‘ship and stone’ analogy is that according to Finrod, the ship “looks up at the light that guides it”. But they’re in the years of the trees, so what light is it looking up at? Shouldn’t the only source of light in the world just lead it right back to Valinor? 😂

The fact that Amazon spent a billion dollars on this show, money better suited to improve the lives of those of us who toil away at the Fullfillment centers makes The Rings of Power and its producers pure evil. I had seen 20 somethings berate 60+ year olds for not meeting their metrics. Thats a billion dollars that could have been spent on improving our lives at Amazon but instead the company focuses on this show that it uses defamation of the original author himself to justify it.
