The Rifle That Refuses to Die: Why the M4 Carbine Won't Go Away
The 5.56x45mm NATO carbine, called the M4, was developed in the United States in the 1980s. This is an assault rifle that is shorter than the M16A2. The decision to largely replace the M16 rifle in the US Army starting in 2010 and the US Marine Corps starting in 2016 fighting units has resulted in the M4 being widely used by the US Armed Forces as the primary infantry weapon and service rifle.

The M4 is great in its current configuration only problem is when you shorten the barrel that much you loose terminal velocity. For that configuration they should have went with a 300 Blackout or something similar for close-quarters knockdown power, you know something is designed to come out of short-barreled rifles. The original M16 with the one in 14" twist Barrel and the XM193 55 grain ammo coming out of that 20 inch barrel with all that velocity was devastating.

The 6.8 SPC II or 6.5 Grendel would not only do the job of a 300 with short barrels but keep the same range as a 5.56 or extend to 1000 yards. Either of those 2 would be better than a single purpose cartridge like the 300.

Actually the M16 was first used by the US Army GI'S during the Vietnam War

Actually it was during WW1 used by the Russian Army. It was so powerful that it was outlawed by every country in the world except the USA. Matter of fact, they even started selling even deadlier ones to civilian that are fully semi automatic. It's so powerful that most police departments say that when they seen these things in murder cases, they found the victim unrecognizable whereas with a handgun, most of the people just get up and walk away laughing even.

@@Dan-di9jd wtf are you talking about, it was invented by Eugene Morrison Stoner in the 1950s. First used in Vietnam. It was never sold to Russia and it's not that powerful, we actually adopted it cause we didn't need a bigger round to kill the VC. 5.56 round are not big rounds they are just fast and accurate.

@@NoBody-tz4fb nope you’re wrong. Originally Eugene was working on the AR-10 in a secret Russian military base during the Korean War. While there he talked to a fellow POW Jim Sullivan who took his AR-10 design and reduced it to what he called an AR-15 so he could smuggle it off base by wrapping it in a condom and inserting it up his rectum. He managed to get it off site and sold it to the Americans who thought it was the next Russian gun. And the Americans bought it because it was so tiny and Koreans are pretty tiny people and could easily mistaken the 5.56 ammo for rice. Little did they know Jim was very evil and made a super deadly civilian version of the gun that anyone holds will instantly morph into a killing machine spraying out 1 million bullets a minute with a 909 rounds banana clip capable of shooting down airplanes.

@@NoBody-tz4fb actually the AR-10 chambred in 7.62x51 NATO was the original development the 1950s by Eugene stoner. After that was rejected by the US military it was scaled down to the 5.56mm version. If you read up on Project A.G.I.L.E it pretty much breaks down the entire history and timelines and then of course the deployment of the rifle.

The AR platform is such a mechanically perfect design with excellent balance, recoil control and general cost effectiveness, it would be insanity to replace it with anything else. Only modification that would make sense would be an adjustable gas block for use with a suppressor. The new SIG rifle is an abortion.

The M4A1 was used by the US Navy Seals and Seal Team Six. The M4 Carbine and M16 was used by the US Marine Corps after the Vietnam War. I think the British SAS sometimes not always but sometimes use the M4 Carbine just like they use the M1911A1

@@ravenpenguin8884 The USA went with the M4 program whereas the reset of the world went with something called the SOF upper which is a 16 inch that included a barrel sleeve to attach accessories. Keep the m4 and ditch the new sig m5. The m4 with new 6.8 round maybe a Daniel Defense gun would be a way more cost effective gun and high quality sometimes the army does things that don't make sense like picking the new helicopter the v280 Valor should have been the defiant x helicopter.
