THE RICOH GR3 FOR CYCLING PHOTOGRAPHY?

I've recently fallen back in love with cycling so of course, I had to find the perfect camera to take with me on my rides. Your first thoughts are probably, just to take your phone with you, and I get that, but I had to dig deeper.
I looked through my collection of cameras to see what would be feasible to take with me and the first camera that came to mind was the Ricoh GR3, so I put it to the test on the streets of Hanoi, Vietnam.

Hey Justin, I’m also a long time cyclist/photog. And yes, carrying a M240 with 90mm Cron in a thinktank sling does make my neck hurt after four hours in the saddle. The images are reliably good so it’s worth it. I can stop riding, swing the bag around in front, put on the wrist strap, turn the camera on and remove the lens cap in less than 15 seconds, which is good for my workflow. Maybe the 500 gram weight difference I should consider more closely. Loved the results from your Ricoh! Glad to see I’m not the only one out there riding/shooting.

I take a Canon G15 point and shoot camera with me when I run in the mornings, because it takes three exposure bracketed images, and gives me three Canon RAW files, that when blended in Lightroom gives me an image that with a darker more colorful sky that looks more like what I remembered the scene to have looked like, than the images my phone gives me, and without using my phone battery juice.

Love the idea of very lightweight camera for shorter rides, so convenient. Normally when I am on longer rides, I am probably doing bikecamping so I have bags and cart on my bike, that’s when I prefer to bring along my Pentax DSLR with 2 zoom lenses. They are rugged & weatherproof. I just make sure they are easily accessible right in front of my handlebar every time I want to shoot something.

I do this as well but It's in a water-resistant case! It's not weather-sealed and not cheap to let it get ruined by moisture from the environment or from sweat. The GoPro can also be used for shooting while riding situations. If I want to use the GR III, I stop to take photos. I also recently dropped the GR and it got scratched pretty bad, but it still works no problem. It is a tough camera but I dunno if it will survive a bike crash. haha

Im also a photographer/biker! ;) I know you normally shoot 35mm so Im curious how you like the 28mm field of view and if you have considered or have tried the GRiiix with the 40mm. Im mainly a Leica Q2 shooter but want something 35 equivalent as a complement to the 28 and to be able to mix it up and challenge myself at times. But I tend to shoot wider and am thinking 40 would be too narrow FOV for me. Just curious about your thoughts as predominantly a 35mm shooter. thanks!

I don’t have a Ricoh GR, but I do have a Canon G7x (which is great for photography and for video work). But, like others have said, in reality, my iPhone 12 is probably the camera that I carry with me most often. It is lightweight, has great quality, great lenses, and just works. I also own a Leica M9, but like you, I don’t think that it is particularly suitable for cycling! I am concerned not only about the weight, but also the value of the camera (if I should fall, or drop it - yikes! That would be a tragedy!) I have also taken my Fuji X100 on multi day rides (when I have luggage, and so can put the camera into a frame bag or panniers). But, I would say, iPhone 12, and then Canon G7x - oh and of course, like you, I also use a GoPro. Thanks for the great video.

@@digitaldion Thank for sharing your set up Dion, that is a good system. I just upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro Max last week and I'm pretty impressed with the quality. For me it's a mental thing, I do use my phone for some video and for photography but when I shoot on the fly or I really like to break down a scene I'm photographing I prefer a dedicated camera so the Ricoh works for me there. I think what you mentioned is kind of the ultimate combo, GoPro for POV long rides and awesome B-Roll, camera phone for every day rides, and a Ricoh or Canon for adventures or dedicated photography rides :).

I have a GR3 which I take for cycling but sometimes swap it out for an RX100 VII. Even smaller and has EVF, Tilt screen, amazing Sony autofocus and 24-200 equiv lens. Smaller sensor but it can shoot so fast you can do handheld bracketed bursts and make up dynamic range in situations where it’s needed. For general shooting the files are still great.

Given the primary use, I don't think there's a better camera on the market. Of the fixed lens compacts, that's the lightest and smallest one. The Fuji X100V is very tempting but considerably bigger than the GR and not as pocket-able. There's also the Sony RX100 series, which are more versatile with their zoom lenses but I'd rather have a prime and a bigger sensor any day :)

I cycle with my GR3 all the time. Completely agree. If in a jersey back pocket, I do try to protect from sweat and the elements by leaving it in its case or a plastic sandwich bag. I recommend keeping it in the middle pocket in case you crash. Better chance of escaping damage. I’m embarrassed to say I speak from experience here. I also have GR1s film camera. Same form factor and I cycle with that as well.
